Dammit, the one time I'm not camping the subreddit and twitter watching for VR news, and Orkel beats me to the punch... Guess I'm still new at this.
Regardless, this is great news, seeing as how I was considering buying a new soundcard, but now I suppose I don't need to. I wonder if the DAC and amp are seperated from the integrated headphones by a cord, and if we'll be able to plug our own headphones into them. As good as the reports of the integrated audio are, I can't help but feel like 'enthusiast' grade headphones will remain the superior option.
The National made an actually good VR video.

Yeah, you can really tell that the guy is significantly impressed by it, or otherwise, is a pretty good actor. I think it's solid evidence of convert on contact.
I'm about to buy a Cardboard and use my phone to play some games via stream and watch vids[sp]porn[/sp]on it.
My smartphone doesn't have an integrated gyro, though, but since I still want to use the mouse I don't really care about that.
How hampered am I going to be without a gyro? Is there a way to have head tracking without it?
I'm planning to use TrinusVR, I tested it on my phone already and seems to play really smooth using the USB tethering but I might need an alternative, preferably one that let me use my WiFi with the least lag.
Using not only cardboard, but with a phone that doesn't have tracking? I don't think you can get any worse than that.

Also I couldn't help but notice the bad motion blur in the intro animation. Very obvious artifacting caused by using RSMB* on repetitive patterns and things going fast out of frame.

Why even bother?

Like, the head tracking is literally the entire point lol

At this point I'd be happy with a monitor wrapped on my head.
Besides they're pretty cheap ATM over here, and like I've said before, I don't need much of tracking because I still want to use a mouse to play.

Using a mouse to forcibly move your head? Sounds like something that'd make you throw up immediately

Okay...
I feel like I ain't gonna get a straight answer here.
So, I don't buy it, then?
Don't.

The DK2 page on the Oculus site was just deleted.
[editline]30th December 2015[/editline]
Or was it deleted a while back? I can't remember at all

I know the ability to purchase was removed last month (Or beginning of this month).
Yeah. Actually removing the DK2 from the site only happened a couple of days ago, though. Just more consumer launch preparations.
Palmer made a few more tweets:

seems like he's just as antsy as anyone else for CV1 to come out, and is proud of what they've accomplished (for good reason)

It's from the CES schedule.
There's always the chance that they'll launch before CES and then discuss the launch at CES.

(runs fine when you're not screen recording it off the CPU)
you may get bored but it's worth the patience
you can use a controller, but you should just press 1 to start the green room when you get to it and just watch

controller game; guide a miniature through a dungeon
this demo handles the tracking range well
the light in the dark dungeon is faded to black as you approach your boundary, so you never actually see the view get all fucked from leaving the tracking range

also, Virtual Desktop finally works with Direct mode
i love the voice commands in it; finally voice recognition has gotten to where I always wished it was
As expected, lucky's tale is one of the free bundled games.

Other components aside, will a single 980ti be enough for rift? Building a new rig within the next two months for it.
All experiences will run perfect if you have the 970. So 980ti will be overkill for this gen, you shouldn't have to worry about anything at all.
[editline]30th December 2015[/editline]
What's your CPU?
Oh ill be looking at the top tier intel ones when i do my research for that. Ideally i wanted to future proof so hard that i can still 60fps a ubisoft game in 4years.
can't tell if earlier comments about launch by CES are a joke or not
even if pre-orders opened on the 1st, it would have to be less than a week to launch to have Rift out by CES

I think the general expectation is that preorders launch during or shortly after CES. P sure nobody's saying the Rift will actually ship at that time.
I was talking about yours and Orkel's comments further up the page with all the optimism
I was talking about yours and Orkel's comments further up the page with all the optimism
Can't speak for Orkel (except that agree rating makes it p clear to me,) but I was very definitely not expressing any belief that the Rift would launch b4 CES. In fact, I didn't even say anything about it except rainbow relating to a conference during the show.
U made some assumptions that just ain't true.
Is the vive expected to have the same requirements as the rift?
They use the same resolution screens at the same 90hz so there's a chance.
Is the vive expected to have the same requirements as the rift?
The relatively high requirements are mostly because of the amount of shaderwork going on and screen res/rate, so since both are pretty much the same, probably yes.
So, I've got a crap ton of cardboard laying around. I'm thinking of building one of those little cardboard vr headsets just for fun with my phone. Anyone know where to get 40mm lenses though?

tbh though by the time you buy and ship the lenses you've pretty much paid the same amount as the cardboard itself so you may as well get the whole shebang:
