Trailer for the infadeck just released:

This is perfect. You can move any direction you want, crouch, etc.
absolutely terrible
another walking device that draws you out of the game more than puts you into it; the harness constantly presses on you preventing any strong movements, and it is literally a one dimensional treadmill
how much worse can it get? why would you even post a treadmill that only moves in one direction? it is just another company trying to cash in on VR as a fad by selling BS to the ignorant
yeah each slice of that treadmill is a mini treadmill of its own, thus why the thing has to be so huge to rotate all those treadmills. The big problem with that bugger looks to be that he REALLY has to push on the treads to move it, and I'm not sure how well walking diagonally and having to move both directions of tread will work out.
Also have fun spending all that money to replace a joystick for games that aren't built with comfort in the rift in mind
and on the points of FPS games not working for the rift, it seems it's always competitive twitch shooters that get brought up. That's a legit concern, and people really need to understand that we're not gonna be playing CS:GO or TF2 or Warframe or similar games in rift, because despite the visual edge, they require lots of fine movement and the ability to whip around on a dime without having to re-orient yourself for a second. Tons of non-competitive FPS content will be fucking AMAZING, more linear experiences like most FPS game story modes will be great, because all of the content remains predictably 'forward' through the levels so you don't rely on constantly having to watch your back nor act on the notion that taking a single shot is going to end your gameplay for several minutes
it moves in all directions actually

I still believe that thumbstick movement will be the most sensible way of moving in first person games for the first few years of VR until something better comes up. You get used to the thumbstick movement after a while, it's that acclimation period which fucks people up.

They might just bypass the whole "feet" thing by making your lower body a rolling ball, or a cyborg on treads
My brother got me a steam controller for Christmas so I am all set on the controller front

Are you saying the treadmills aren't powered? As in, the operator has to use their body to "push" the simulated ground along?

there are really not many solutions to the whole issue of movement in VR
Having tried Half Life 2 and TF2 with the DK2, this is not a statement I disagree with. Shooters, at least in the traditional sense, I don't think work well in VR. They have to be designed around the limitations which makes for very unorthodox shooters like that VIVE one where you teleport around and can grab bullets with your hands, or psuedo-stationary stuff like Hover Junkers, which is a very interesting workaround for the motion sickness that comes from moving the camera around.
Maybe I just lack imagination, but with my experiences with the DK2, I have a very hard time imagining anything remotely unrestrained, fast paced, or requiring precision like Unreal Tournament or Tribes, working in VR at all. For really slow stuff like ARMA I could see a VR setup kinda working, if only because you move so slowly, but it'll definitely feel like a shoehorned in feature.
Not sure what you're on about, this seems fine.
The fast paced robot combat sport thing coming on the PSVR is interesting since we don't know how it feels to play. Will it make people motion sick or have they figured it out? Maybe the cockpit helps, but it's still like unreal tournament in mechs.
Holy shit, that gave me an idea of a way to move a mech and still have it VR believable.

Oops, one post under yours had a better movement method.
When I said "FPS games won't work in VR" in reference to that thread, my counterpoint to that was SuperHot.
Because SuperHot is amazing, and it seems to do the "FPS in VR" thing fairly well.
I think we'll definitely be seeing traditional joystick movement in VR, though, for a very long time to come. I don't think Oculus would have put joysticks on their controllers if they didn't want that to happen.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Astral Body movement system, where you go into third-person for moving around, and you can warp into first-person for accurate movements in your immediate area. If you don't want to have your users deal with the acclimation to joystick movement, that's not a bad way to work around it.

How does that look to you all as a cheap walker?
[editline]3rd January 2016[/editline]
As was said before, people will eventually just get used to thumbstick though.
I feel like people would get exhausted after an hour of shuffling.
Using that in a game where you primarily need to run, would be hell on people's legs.
But it could be good for exercising.
So whatever HTC is announcing, rumor has it that it is very much related to positional tracking and that some partners are already working on implementing it or already have.
Wonder if it is a coincidence that Tilt Brush and Job Simulator have special CES builds on Steam or if they're already going to demo this stuff.

So you literally commented (and criticised my post) without even bothering to watch the video for longer than a minute?
Anyway, I don't think that will really kick off. Not necessarily because of the prize, but because most people want to chill when they get home and not run around for a few hours. Maybe if it becomes really cheap and they create something cool for it, maybe like PlayStation Home (but better).
Oh man!
Last year at CES we were just quietly meeting with people and checking things out while we kept our secret. This one will be a bit different.

Are you guys still going to get the Rift if Valve decides to make the next portal game based of the tech demo Vive exclusive?
I'm buying whatever vr headset is better in my opinion. lm sure the vive will be able to play the next portal game too so I'm not too sure what you're asking
I'm asking if Valve decides to only support the Vive with whatever VR game they release, will you guys still end up getting the Rift. How is that hard to understand. Oculus has been developing their own set of games exclusive to the Rift but i don't think anything they can come put with can compare with what Valve will make.
We don't know the quality of the "hardcore gamer" Oculus Studio games that Palmer indirectly confirmed yet, we've only seen the fun/casual ones like Lucky's Tale so far. But I'm not going to ditch to an entirely different platform just because of a Valve game.
Windlands went up on early access but the trailer looks exactly like the free demo from a year ago. I'm disappointed. Why should I put money down if an entire year of development time (even on personal time) had nothing to show?

Don't forget EVE Valkyrie
Are you guys still going to get the Rift if Valve decides to make the next portal game based of the tech demo Vive exclusive?
Valve uses a VR standard which is compatible with the Rift and other HMDs, so probably.
If they decided to make a flagship title not only VR exclusive, but Vive exclusive, there would be no end to the PR disaster that would cause.

I doubt Valve would make their VR-compatible games incompatible with the Oculus. HL2 already supports Oculus.

people should probably realize that valve helped OR out for a while

Yeah which is exciting.
fuuuuuuck I am so excited for CES
Yeah which is exciting.
Sure, but some people were thinking of games. The Valve Content Showcase will be after CES and it's not guaranteed Valve themselves will show a new game.
I can't find when Oculus is scheduled at CES. Or are they just doing an online announcement thing?
I'm lost to here the valve breakthrough came from, don't have to link it, just want to know when, who, and where it was said?
