Okay guys so in my excitement I started thinking. (€463) (I know this info has been around for a long time now but... I'm just really hoping it isn't more than €500)
Still no price, but at least we now have a date. I wonder how much time we will have to wait from the pre-order to the actual launch.
As a level designer it totally wouldn't lol Whatever is the most efficient way to build a level or a model is the way that is going to be industry standard. Strapping on a headset to walk around a level is a cool way to playtest a level/model but it is only practical if your application is for VR anyways, and has zero application for development once you already establish the scale. Nobody is going to be designing models/levels in the way you are thinking of (that one video) because it's going to be much clunkier and inefficient vs just using a viewport, mouse and a lot of keyboard shortcuts. Editors don't thrive on gimmicks, they thrive on having as many options as possible at your fingertips to be used as efficiently as possible for the expert that has enough knowledge to use the program.
Look at it this way, we had over 2 decades if not more to master UI design to the point where it's relatively fast to use CAD, mapping or modelling software. VR is a new area for games and completely new for high-end software. Software designers will have to completely reinvent UI to make best use of motion tracked controllers and trackpads. I see the projection of the 3D image on a 2D plane as an obvious disadvantage when you are designing 3D things. You sound like one of the guys that complained when engineering went from drawing boards to 2D CAD, or from 2D CAD to 3D CAD. The next step in this evolution is very likely, VR CAD. (And after that AI CAD, or true CAD probably). Just because no one has invented a good VR software UI system yet doesn't mean no one will.
^being involved in 3D CAD since the 90's, and working at an architecture firm I can tell you so many stories of the transition from traditional drawing to things like AutoCAD, and more recently ACAD to Revit The aldermen of Chicago STILL require certain information to be drawn- by hand, in pencil -because they don't want to update codes for fear of having to adjust to the change also quick somebody tell me how CPU shopping works I'm stuck in 2009
I don't like this extra software, why aren't they just using Steam? Actually, is Steam really all that involved still? Except for the controllers?
Extra software is not required, its mainly for countries steam cant sell in like china. SteamVR is all you need.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zLWqGX You're looking at about $100 cheaper for the bare minimum.
God damnit Palmer.
Time to start playing around with it. My base run came in around 7600. Lets see how overclocking changes that.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zLWqGX You're looking at about $100 cheaper for the bare minimum.
No, they actually list 3 pre-build PC's on their site specifically for VR (check the source :( ) so I'm guessing those are what Brendan was talking about. EDIT: About the price, some user commented:
How in the world can you announce pre-orders opening in 2 days without announcing pricing? They've said over and over that they're pricing the Rift the way they want and not in comparison to the Vive. If that's true, hiding the price for so long doesn't make sense to me.
Then Palmer responded:
This is standard practice in the consumer electronics industry. The price is almost always announced alongside preorders. Phones, game consoles, they all do it this way - it is kind of weird to see people thinking it is some kind of special sign about anything!
https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/3zfa1f/oculus_rift_preorders_to_open_on_january_6/cyllupt

Don't get an overclockable variant if you're using it for work related tasks. Stability is more important than the performance gain from overclocking especially if time is money.
Very slightly overclocked i5 2500k, and stock GTX 770 gives around 7000 points, which seems to be the average for the GTX 770, even with better processors. Once I slap in the 980 it should soar right over the recommended, as many others have proven with their i5's.
No, they actually list 3 pre-build PC's on their site specifically for VR (check the source :( ) so I'm guessing those are what Brendan was talking about.
Yeah. Depends on whether or not Brendan was talking about those PCs back in May last year.
Time to start playing around with it. My base run came in around 7600. Lets see how overclocking changes that.
I managed around 7200 with a GTX 770 but I have a 970 coming in the mail. Hopefully that picks up the slack because I really can't afford to be throwing upgrades at my PC once I've bought the Rift. At least not for a while. :v:

I'm getting 9185 with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 and a Intel Core i5-3570K Processor. Haven't overclocked it.
Just to clarify, just the Rift (headset) and not the Touch, correct? Will there be a separate pre-order for the Touch?
Touch controllers will now launch in the second half of 2016. Palmer said pre-orders will go up "a few months" before launch. So probably around the summer. Edit: Since everyone's doing it, here's my 3dMark score.

Unless some countries don't need that certification it looks like a really small amount for me. I still hope Tortillaland is in that list tho :excited:
Wait, you gotta buy the benchmark?
