You know, I wanted to get shit done this week. But all this VR news along with the AGDQ stream is just like NOPE.
Yes, they're shipping to Belgium! (And yes, Clavus, same here, studying is really hard while excited..)
I wouldn't mind if it was just 2 nunchucks like the ones the wii has, rather than touch controls.
So what is the donut shaped thingy at the top of the Vive controllers for?
So what is the donut shaped thingy at the top of the Vive controllers for?
Finger tracking I'd guess
So what is the donut shaped thingy at the top of the Vive controllers for?
All the little dents are where the light sensors are located.
Finger tracking I'd guess
Vive doesn't do finger tracking as far as everyone's aware.
So what is the donut shaped thingy at the top of the Vive controllers for?
I think its just an efficient arrangement for the sensors, just like Oculus Touch has a circle of sensors the Vive controllers have a "donut" at the tip of the controller with the sensors placed around it. Except that the guys designing the Touch managed to accommodate the sensors around the hand, making the controller much more compact.
Vive doesn't do finger tracking as far as everyone's aware.
Maybe not built in but didn't they demo at the chinese conference some kind of glove you could put on and have tracking? Also that "breakthrough" being detecting objects in your room and being able to overlay them is pretty neat

Also I'm thinking, should we start a new VR thread once pre-orders launch tomorrow? I want to build up a new OP without losing this one, as a proper introduction to the age of consumer virtual reality. Agree or Disagree.
start the thread a bit early so this one has time to be locked and not posted in with the coming hype-wave
This thread is getting close to the end anyway.
then just edit the OP with all the info you can when it becomes available [sp]especially now that you don't have to F5 spam the store[/sp]
Good article on the Vive's new Chaperone system here http://www.engadget.com/2016/01/05/htc-vive-virtual-reality-chaperone/
Vive Pre unboxing video, if anyone wants to see what's (physically) different from its predecessor:
Holy shit they're actually giving the Oculus to those who got the DK1 through Kickstarter? God damn what a nice company :v:
Holy shit thats SUPER NICE of them I mean im completely dumbfounded. Most companies wouldnt give a 20$ giftcard for their own stuff. Damn, my thought process was, "i'll buy it when it releases" but now i really wish i had funded the kickstarter. [editline]5th January 2016[/editline] Really seems like oculus's controllers are way more immersive because they are held more naturally. I'd also imagine they are better balanced and/or lighter. Though vive's tracking system is much better. Its all honestly going to be down to the price. Unless you specifically plan to use VR in driving/flying simulators or experiences where you walk and move around more.
This thread will be interesting to visit in the future, in about 5 or 6 years. The next thread will already catch the consumer release of the Oculus and the beginning of en masse VR adoption, and most of the thread will likely be discussing the actual headsets that are already in people's hands and experiences in them, but this thread is like "the year before VR".
phew the netherlands is in the list :) am a happy bunny
aww yus me too

As much as I've been following this VR stuff from the start, I've just come to the sad realisation that because of the bloody cost of the Vive / Rift, and upgrading my computer, it's going to be a very long time before I can get into VR. Definitely going to be a v. Late adopter Just need to find a rich mate, then I'm all sorted

Just that constant motion of trying to pull your nose downwards gets pretty straining on the face and neck. It really give that "it weighs about as much as a baseball cap" phrase a lot of weight with me. So much even, that it may be one of the primary deciding factors for me between the two.

All this shit is only worth it when you already have a PC good enough for it. If you're buying an upgrade just for this, you're already screwed and spent billions over budget
After Not buying the DK 1 and 2 I think I'll cave in and preorder it tomorrow. If I had the patience and money I'd wait for the vive but I'm pretty sure that it's going to cost a lot more than the rift. One thing I'm curious about is if I could use the vive controller for the rift and vice versa but I guess no one knows yet?

You don't have to budget as much because you're worrying about the PC and might spend more on that, and then get what you want as the end goal. buying everything all at once is a terrible idea imho. This is just me though. I'd never buy a GPU + a monitor at the same time as an immediate upgrade.
