Might buy a dev kit if it's at the right price. The fact that it comes packed with its own sixense style controllers (or whatever the hell they actually are) is a huge plus.
Why buy a dev kit when the final improved version is coming out in Q4 Besides the Vive DK isn't going to be as easily acquired as the Rift DK2, they're only handing them out to "select developers".
Why buy a dev kit when the final improved version is coming out in Q4
Because.
Oh come on, my dream of being able to walk with a revive and map out 3d spaces is already crushed.
why are you calling it revive
it was sort of announced as RE Vive
who fucking cares its easier to call it revive
who fucking cares its easier to call it revive
but it objectively isn't, revive is 2 syllables
GearVR for the Samsung Galaxy S6 announced. [editline]2nd March 2015[/editline] Apparently Valve's tracking system is quite unlike anything out there. Guess we'll hear more about it at GDC.
While valve isn't always for grabbing as much money as they can, I'm rather surprised they aren't mass manufacturing the dev kits. they'd get a lot more feedback on everything they need to improve on.
but it objectively isn't, revive is 2 syllables
Are Eee Vive
While valve isn't always for grabbing as much money as they can, I'm rather surprised they aren't mass manufacturing the dev kits. they'd get a lot more feedback on everything they need to improve on.
HTC is the one making dev kits, not Valve. It's sort of the same thing they're doing with Steam Machines: trying to get different hardware manufacturers to support their gaming platform for a more unified experience. The Vive is going to be one of many HMDs that will be able to utilize the SteamVR middleware. Also, quick screen comparison (not really taking into account other factors like pixel arrangement but whatever): [t]http://i.imgur.com/KvJ0MFR.jpg[/t]
Are Eee Vive
This pronunciation madness is going to cause a rift in the community.
Vive seems to be using Fresnel lenses.
Vive seems to be using Fresnel lenses.
Makes sense. Wasn't it Valve that came up with the idea for Fresnel lenses in the first place?
reddit, combined with the official description on their site, as linked by Sini. It seems to lean that way.
I'm pretty sure it has positional tracking by itself (i.e. leaning/etc for head movements) but if you want to be able to walk around in a room for body tracking you need the camera.
I'm really looking forward to see how it works at home. If it uses two laser base stations and the sensors are placed on the front of Vive, I can see it having real problems with my setup. I have my PC placed in front of a window with curtains, my chair is close to the left wall (way too close unless those sensors have huge FOV) - so the only usable tracking source might be the right side of my room. I'm willing to rebuild my room from the ground for this though :v: . The hype, can't handle this.
Seems smaller than the DK2.
It does look it, doesn't it?
Seems smaller than the DK2.
that looks nice, actually. More trendy than the DK2 for sure.
I prefer the DK2's more simple-shaped look personally.
Makes sense. Wasn't it Valve that came up with the idea for Fresnel lenses in the first place?
No? Oculus has already explored many different optics. Palmer made a comment about the downsides of Fresnel lenses last year. So either the Vive has these downsides or they're using a different variant that mitigates said issues. We probably won't know until someone puts them next to each other for comparison. [editline]2nd March 2015[/editline] In other slightly related news, Unreal Engine 4 is now free.
The design of the Vive right now looks very-HTC. I'm stoked to see what both the Rift and Vive consumer versions end up looking like. Hopefully they get some talented industrial designers to make them more palatable for general consumers.
Yay a mod finally renamed the thread title. It was weird talking about every VR thing except Oculus and having the thread title just be "Oculus Thread"
Yay a mod finally renamed the thread title. It was weird talking about every VR thing except Oculus and having the thread title just be "Oculus Thread"
Yeah I just added some Morpheus and Vive info to the OP. I'll restructure it some more later so it's more "VR general".
First report on Vive https://twitter.com/ScottBroock/status/572418839817797633
Just experienced HTC and Valve's VR solution at #MWC15. Utterly phenomenal. The controller solution is intuitive and precise

Are you allowed to talk about the controller more?

going to play it safe and let the press cover it. Can easily say that it just feels "right."

First report on Vive https://twitter.com/ScottBroock/status/572418839817797633
I am honestly very excited for VALVe's conference tomorrow, VR interfaces are really cool, and I can't wait to see what Steam's looks like, even if it is just VR big picture.
There's no Valve conference tomorrow. There won't be any Valve conference this GDC, period. Tomorrow they'll have two physics dev sessions, one of which will be at 3 pm and people ran away with it...turning it into something which it's not. Other sessions Valve will have is VR rendering on Wednesday and glNext on Thursday. That's it.
I was reading that they are going to be showing off the Vive.
Chet Faliszek is speaking about Valve's VR at the Rezzed developer sessions next week: http://www.egx.net/rezzed/2015/sessions Guess they want the messaging to be aimed more at the public than developers at GDC.
I was reading that they are going to be showing off the Vive.
Yeah I thought they'd at least be saying something about the Vive/SteamVR? I didn't fucking mean they'd announce HL3 and their own competitor to fucking Windows, I'm not retarded.
I was reading that they are going to be showing off the Vive.
Yes, for devs (registration required, behind closed door), the press (maybe at their booth or behind closed doors?) and probaby gamers (since demos will be at their booth). From the 4th, since that's when the expo starts. And Valve will obviously make announcements through the press and we'll get impressions, but as far as separate conference/livestream, no.
