How many cables are gonna have to be plugged into the OR or the Vive? Because I was thinking of getting one of these HDMI cables since they're thin and flexible, but if I'm gonna have other cables to deal with too then I won't bother. I hope this is an aspect they're considering because cables, especially HDMI, are usually stiff as fuck.
Ah just saw that the consumer Vive will only have one cable. Hope they can keep it slim even though it must be handling a shit load of data.
it'll probably be a single cable going to some kind of demuxing box with all the outputs there

I expect it'll be a combined set of cables in a single sleeve (HDMI and USB). Just like the DK2.
Just ordered the oculus rift DK2, I wish i could had wait for the HTC Vive but i gotta present my thesis by june and the oculus shall do the job..
What's your topic? Doing my MSc thesis with my own DK2 at the moment.
Just ordered the oculus rift DK2, I wish i could had wait for the HTC Vive but i gotta present my thesis by june and the oculus shall do the job..
What are you doing for your thesis.
So now is it screw oculus rift and HTC vive for the wins?
Pretty much, but that's because Oculus hasn't put out any new demoes for a while, so we have no idea how their current prototypes might perform. When they decide to reveal their secrets, the rift might very well become relevant again..
But for now, the Vive is the most promising set so far.
And hopefully affordable like oculus or close, but since its steam, theres good hope.
By the way, i got myself a google cardboard for my nexus 5, it looks pretty good, and its impressive to see what it does for so basics. I cant wait to see the real thing.
Three of us doing university projects on the DK2 in the thread, that's pretty awesome

Mine's only a BSc dissertation though :(((
Valve's Alan Yates has tweeted a quick overview of how Lighthouse works and how it can be expanded:
https://twitter.com/vk2zay
Most notable:
There are many modes Lighthouse can operate in, so far you've only seen one.

Lighthouse was designed from day one to be scalable, you can in principle concatenate tracking volumes without limit like cell towers.

For many purposes finger tracking is actually less useful than a controller. Little is more haptically positive than a snappy switch.

Lighthouse is not the dual of a camera: The "dots" know their ID; the hardware gives you angles directly. Pose calc' can be decentralised.
[editline]6th March 2015[/editline]
Also, tweets from Oculus' Chris Taylor about upcoming changes in the SDK:
https://twitter.com/oculuscat
In case you missed it, Anuj announced that the PC-SDK for the Oculus Rift will support a DLL model and a layered Compositor, this morning.

Oculus DLL model: Games no longer have to rebuild to take advantage of new updates to the SDK.

Layered Compositor: Timewarp and other HMD render steps are done outside of the app process, which makes it much less likely to break.

We also announced some forays into Async Timewarp and Late Latching, which are exciting techniques to eliminate judder and improve latency.
If the price is 200 euros or below at release I'm getting the Vive.
I think anyone expecting the vive to be under $300 is seriously kidding themselves.
You are looking at $500 at least IMO
Keep in mind OR's CV1 was projected to hopefully hit $350-$400 price point by the guys behind it, and that is just with the headset only (and whatever camera is required to track it) as well as the expectation that they were not going to make a huge profit with hopes of establishing a market
This is a fully featured headset system that uses two fancy pants base stations for full room/body tracking, two controllers (that are basically fancy steam controllers, and those retail for $50) and the headset itself. Not to mention its being made by HTC and the profit split between two companies, so there will be an expectation for this thing to make money when it sells. Especially if the consumer version releases with a higher resolution as rumored.
I'm calling $500-$600 at the least for the full Vive kit.
Considering all the above and that some common smartphones are $700 brand new, this is probably likely let alone plausible.
Not to say I don't want to believe :v:
[editline]6th March 2015[/editline]
Thinking about what/how VR technology is going to influence is kind of weird because we all know this shit will blow up when it's done right
I just hope they'll have European retailers from day 1. Importing shit from the US is expensive.
I want John Carmack to ditch Oculus and work at Valve's VR department.
we need all HMD's/VR projects to combine into one
The Vivoculorpheus
I want John Carmack to ditch Oculus and work at Valve's VR department.
He traded secrets & techniques with them already.
My only concern with VIVE is if I can use it in a small space, i.e. sitting at my desk. I'm not too fond of having to dedicate a big space to VR when all I'm interested in is using it like the current sitting Oculus demos used it.
You know how people have music rooms where they have a full audio setup? It'd be kind of interesting to have one of those for VR.
Get grid wallpaper and call it the Holodeck

I've been thinking about a 120hz monitor for quite some time now.
but compared to the rift/VR, I think I'd rather have diarhea at work than buy a stationary screen that isn't going to do anything interesting at all and doesn't have a 3d effect / high fov
the wait is killing me!

i've got a 144hz monitor and i'm never buying 60 again unless i absolutely have to
[editline]6th March 2015[/editline]
just like when you upgrade resolution, there is no going back
[editline]6th March 2015[/editline]
get asus vg248qe or benq xl2411
they're the same product in all ways that matter except ports
compare ports offered and prices you can find them for
[editline]6th March 2015[/editline]
its gonna be 8 months until any sort of vr device is available to buy, so if you can afford the monitor now just do it and keep saving
[editline]6th March 2015[/editline]
the benq one is 3D but 3D monitors are a gimmick feature because nothing properly supports it

I could get a monitor now but for now I'm mostly waiting until one of my 2 monitor breaks (once you go dual-screen you don't go back)
biggest issue though, is I'll have a 120hz monitor, and a 60hz monitor :v: Every time I move a window from one screen to another I'll instantly notice the window being dragged around is suddenly choppy and unsexy

3d is always a bad gimmick, outside of VR
at least for me, I can't stand 3d movies at all
All I knew about the asus one was that at original release it required a special kit from nvidia to disassemble your monitor to put in. Strange that they would change it to include it and yet keep the same complex item name.

these are insanely good headphones for games, I absolutely suggest getting them for VR
Betrayer is an amazing game when it comes to sound, I imagine it'd be fun to play with VR as well

the monitor difference is very noticeable yes
you should definitely get one of the two i listed
and if you do, know that the color will look atrocious when you first plug it up
just use windows monitor calibration, ignore the internet's bullshit about color profiles
the hobbit did 3d great, and was the only time i thought it made a movie better
for a few reasons
IMAX 3D has less color loss from the glasses
IMAX screens are huge
I saw it in the 48fps showing, which makes it work way better and not strain the eyes
They filmed it with two cameras, making the scenes truly 3D instead of only having a few 2D layers spaced apart in post-processing.

similarly priced

I spend days adjusting my colors outside of nivida's panel, always a shame that it takes so long, but I end up getting it "perfect" at least
hopefully one of my monitors die quick :v: it's the only excuse I have not to get one

Absolutely nothing is fancy about them really, except for that they're open air. open air headphones feel and sound more natural to me, and I don't know my headphones too well, but I've had a great experience with these so I thought I'd share a link with everyone who might need some

Educational Applications / Uses of the Virtual Reality
Kind of simple but everything here is so horrendously outdated and old that you can barely learn something useful honestly speaking.

the windows calibration on this benq got it perfect in less than a minute of fiddling
do nooooot use the calibration software disc a monitor comes with, the software is a nightmare
also, bright monitors = never go back

stop stop stop. you aren't making them perfect at all
'calibrating by eye' is literally the exact opposite of calibration
[editline]7th March 2015[/editline]
you don't get 'perfect' unless you buy a colour-accurate monitor (aka none of those 144hz monitors) or you calibrate it with a colourimeter
i hope the OLED displays in the rift and vive are calibrated well. samsung got the calibration down for the latest gen S5 so i would like to think so.
