It's pretty bad. As if it was ported from non-VR to VR. Some text is unreadably small, and there are tons of nauseating camera movements.
Valve will be giving the HTC Vive devkits away for free.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/03/valve-to-offer-htc-vive-developer-edition-for-free/
With its Rift development kit program, Oculus has charged $300 to $350 to tens of thousands of developers (and doubtless some ultra-early-adopting consumers) who wanted to get their hands on early versions of the headset. Valve is going in a different direction with the Vive VR headset it's developing in conjunction with HTC, offering an early Developer Edition for free to qualified developers.
So far, Valve and HTC have seeded kits to a handful of specially chosen developers, including Owlchemy Labs (Aaaaaa! For The Awesome), Bossa Studios (Surgeon Simulator, I Am Bread), Fireproof Games (The Room), and Cloudhead Games (The Gallery). Others will have to wait; "more info and 'sign up' forms will be available to all interested developers, big or small, via a new site coming soon," Valve spokesperson Doug Lombardi told Ars Technica. The current hope is to get the sign-up site up and running next week, Lombardi says.
Approved developers will get a Developer Edition kit that "will be free, at least initially," Lombardi said. Those kits will start shipping later in the spring as part of an "ongoing effort" to get the development hardware out widely ahead of a planned 2015 consumer launch. The decision to release it for free is interesting given that HTC Connected Products Marketing Executive Director Jeff Gattis recently said consumers should expect "a slightly higher price point" for the final version of the hardware
I think we can safely assume at this point that Valve really doesn't like the way Oculus has been handling things on any front...

They're not giving out thousands of these the way that oculus has, for free. This is just for proven developers, not programming hobbyists and tech enthusiasts.

I can see that. I just wonder why they seem to be essentially trying to outdo Oculus now, if not to sort of spur them on with competition.

still, valve is making pretty sure to make it known they're not fucking around. They're aiming at providing a 'premium' experience while oculus is trying to balance out affordability, so I think there's different end-goals between the companies.
It's both cool and smart they're putting out the units like this, it ensures devs will hop at the chance and get the tech put out on big projects

They're launching this year and probably need as many devs to get their hands on SteamVR and be ready for launch asap.
So im stuck with my dk2 order. They cancelled it becouse i used my currier address for the shippibg since you cant receive anything here in venezuela. I font really have any family outside in the US that could help me. Is there anything i could do?

What? They cancelled it, yet you're stuck with it? I don't understand.
Sorry my bad, Im pretty much just trying to say that im "stuck" becouse my whole Tesis is based on the educational uses of VR and i was planning to demostrate some stuff with the Oculus . Now that i have seen they dont accept curriers and i dont know anywhere outside here that would do me a favor i really cant see any alternative...
Robotics has finally given us a solution to "where do I keep my drinks when jumping around in VR?"

As long as you're trusting and the shipping itself isn't an issue (no huge problems shipping from US to VZ) I'm sure you could find someone on here or elsewhere on the internet who would be willing to help you out

This really isn't them giving it away for free at least in the same sense of Oculus's dev kits
You get a devkit for "free" if you are on their approved list of developers basically, at the cost of not-well-known developers or indies not being able to get a devkit at all (or having to pay). Oculus's approach is that everyone has open and equal access to dev kits, even people who are going to never ever ever develop with it (which is a LOT of people who buy the dev kits).
In the end if you are one of the people getting on their approved list anyways, the cost of buying a dev kit for a theoretically $500 is negligible. This move is more or less "Hey you could probably make cool VR shit, and now we are gonna make it hard to say no because here is the hardware to do it" vs putting the onus onto the developer to actually get hardware themselves.

I don't see how this suggests that at all?? Valve was always a fan of Oculus's approach (includes the launch of the first two dev kits and how they were handled) all the way up until Facebook when they suddenly got a lot less transparent and wishy-washy about making an actual product release.
If anyone wants to see what Palmer Luckey would look like as a woman, Google Courtney Barnett.
Actually just look:

Why. Why in the world would I.
However if you would ask how he would look like as a pony, you're in luck.

What they say is not really supporting your point. Clearly they're offering the Vive to all sorts of developers, but obviously someone who just started working on a new project 'because of VR' is not going to get recognised as a qualified developer without bringing a game to the table first.
Also, in the future anyone will be able to buy the Vive. I don't see what's wrong in gathering as many developers as you can for your new hardware to build a support base. If a developer gets one for free, then it'll be more likely said developer will develop games for the Vive.

That wouldn't be true, You are more likely to use a product you paid money for than got for free.
That wouldn't be true, You are more likely to use a product you paid money for than got for free.
it's the fact that the developers wouldn't have bought it if it was an expensive (and more niche) devkit and they already had an oculus to develop for
Managed to try Rift DK2 on an expo we were having this weekend.
The setup they showed us wasn't the best. It was some flyby of some islands with a volcano, couple of trees, and a cave, and it wasn't on the best quality graphic-wise.
For some reason they thought it was a good idea to make us sit in bikes that went up and down acordingly with the help of some wires. I feel like those kids from the movie E.T.
Other than that, it was great, but I think I'll have to deal with motion sickness if I ever get the glasses.

I mean I swear, I saw a 7 year old girl climbing up and down one of those things just fine.
I had to struggle to get down of that thing without tripping on something.
Just ordered a DK2 because I can't wait for VR any longer.
I wanted to pre-order the DK2 last year but was convinced the consumer Rift was going to drop by the end of the year and it seemed like a waste. WELP.
I want to say that VR is something that I am really excited for. Like, I don't know that I've actually looked forward to something like this in a long time. I skipped out on the DK2, and I've never had the opportunity to use it or demo any other headset, but the knowledge that I will be able to own my own before the end of this year is fantastic. Most of my friends are hardly aware of what is happening with VR, so I really look forward to getting it set up and being the cool kid with the neat toys.
Whether I buy a Rift, Vive or both or something else entirely I don't know yet.
What I do know is that the future is so close I can almost taste it.
Probably gonna sell my DK2 during April, had my fun with it over the past 1 year and it's better to put that money in savings towards the CV1.
I think I'll sell mine as soon as I'm done with it for my dissertation, so by the end of May.
[editline]30th March 2015[/editline]
That way I can jump straight on the CV1/Vive pre order as soon as it's announced, woo!
I'm keeping my DK 1 and 2, I don't think I'll be buying any new HMDs until 2016 when I've got some sort of comparison.

How much do you want for it, and are you in the US?
Selling it on the Finnish market only
That's unfortunate. Guess I'll just have to wait six/nine more months until I can buy an HMD from the shops.

This monitor just arrived this morning! It got announced at GDC this year its the first 144hz IPS display. Anyone here willing to take an offer? pm me price can be debateable. I prefer someone from europe. I only used it since 6 months.
