So I've been trying to come up with some idea about how VR is going to impact journalism... And I've got nothing.
What do you guys think? Is there anything worth using there?

Also for some reason they aren't showing the slides next to it. You can find them here: http://alex.vlachos.com/graphics/Alex_Vlachos_Advanced_VR_Rendering_GDC2015.pdf
Anyone thought of waking up with the Rift on and some good headphones that you can't feel when worn so you can wake up in some demo and get scared of something? If I ever get the Rift and some friend passes out after a party in my flat I'd love to try that out. I'd stay awake all night just to do that one thing.
STEM system shipping delayed to July because they failed FCC/CE testing: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/89577853/stem-system-the-best-way-to-interact-with-virtual/posts/1184446?ref=backer_project_update

the rift is wayyyy noticeable on your head, you're not sneaking that one by anyone, plus you'd probably get some bad screen burn-in if you left a demo running on somebody who barely moves for 8 hours
it's a cool concept but would just be awkward and damaging in practice

I wasn't ready to leave a demo running for 8 hours, I'd wait and set everything up and just like an hour before I expect anything I start everything up.
Anyway I haven't tried the rift out yet so I have literally no idea how it looks and feels like.

That burn-in issue is still around?
Wonder if they'll solve that before launch. Seems like it could be pretty costly in the long run.

It's almost too obvious to mention, but I'd think that photo/videojournalism would be much more impactful if it felt like you were in the scene.
Wouldn't this thread be better off in General Discussion?

Please god no. I'd throw it in the Rust subforum before even considering GD.
[editline]1st April 2015[/editline]
But honestly it seems just fine here. VR is still very gaming focussed.

No, go away.

razer's vr headset that will allow the changing of parts such as the screen to 'build' a device for your budget, will include leap motion as an option
aka
leap motion continues to scam people by pretending to be a proper hand tracking system
Honestly, I think the core idea behind Leap Motion has some merit, but they don't put enough effort into their hardware or software for it to really work properly.
We've seen predictive and adaptive hand tracking through things like the Kinect, where it works relatively well, so there's no reason why Leap couldn't produce a similarly-performing product if they put more effort into refining what they have.
It's not a bad concept, it's just a bad product.

I've never used it, and I think most people haven't, but I've seen this sentiment repeated a lot.
Why?
Because it doesn't work. I have one.
A single finger works fine, and tracking the position of your hands as a whole works fine... inside a very very small field of view and distance.
If you need more than one finger, it spazzes out like boneitis.

it is literally useless for VR, but they're marketing it hardcore to unknowing VR users
the absolute lack of precision combined with the terrible range and field of view make it nothing but frustrating and immersion destroying
I thought it was just that the software wasn't up to par yet when I first tried it, and I just tried it again recently, zero improvement after like two years and numerous updates.
Update for the SteamVR beta:
The SteamVR beta has been updated with the following changes.
General:
Added log message to vrclient.txt when failing to find interface (to print out requested interface)
Compositor:
Fix for running start with Unity
Added direct mode rendering support for Oculus devices (only applies to apps using the compositor)
Fixed D3D10 shared texture support
Re-enabled gamma correction for overlay textures
Separated transform used for rendering the grid vs overlay (so the overlay can be positioned without affecting the grid)
Fixed positional updates for grid while fading in
Oculus:
Exposed camera transform as a tracked object for displaying in game
Added rendermodel for DK2 camera
Will probably hit the main branch in a while.
Woo!, my Oculus DK2 Has been shipped , In the meantime are there any good demos i should get?
DK2 works great in Live For Speed, I just wish I could turn off the HUD.
I think you could do that in the options?
I haven't been able to find it. Its almost as if the option disappeared during the switch to the VR UI or something. I seriously can't find even a keybind for it.
DK2 sold for 350€ within a day of putting it up on sale so that's nice. Just gotta make sure if it's a legit buyer or not since the account has no activity on it before.

Now this makes me think of watching VR TV and having one of those ads about pet abuse with "In the Arms of an Angel" pop up.

Immersive sadness.
wanted more context as to what they were seeing so I checked the owly link- http://reliefweb.int/report/jordan/un-agencies-team-bring-voices-syrian-refugees-world-leaders-through-virtual-reality
30 March 2015, Kuwait – The United Nations is using virtual reality (VR) to transport top decision-makers to a Syrian refugee camp at a major donor conference. Clouds Over Sidra is a VR experience designed to take viewers to the Za’atari camp in Jordan – home to 84,000 Syrian refugees. World leaders will follow a 12-year-old girl as she invites them into her new home, her makeshift classroom and to share a meal with her family. The goal is to connect donors with Syrians affected by the war and inspire leaders to make bold commitments.

To watch Clouds Over Sidra, download the VRSE app (http://vrse.com/) and watch either with google cardboard (https://www.google.com/get/cardboard/) on any smartphone, or with the new Samsung Gear VR (http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/gearvr/).

world leaders were sickened by the situation further by the mobile VR motion sickness
