Isn't there some theory that says if we can create a wholly convincing virtual reality, that our reality itself is just a virtual reality that we're experiencing?
Or am I thinking of the simulation thing?

If we can have a full simulation of proper water and cloth (And everything else) physics with infinitely added detail (Talking going from outer space view to microscopic detail like blood cells) while keeping fully realistic details in materials and meshes AND keeping 90+ FPS then it's possible.
At the moment, it's impossible with our current hardware. But in theory, it could be possible in the far distant future.
My DK2 Arrived and my mind has been blown away in absolutly every sense. Holy shit i necer though vr would be this inmersive. My only gripe is tjat the dk2 at some times has tis hugeeeee pixellation effect thing is there anything i can do to at least turn it down a bit?

You could have waited...
Outside of that, I've heard people have had some luck with using those 3M privacy screens as a diffuser. The fresnel lenses in the newest CC prototypes apparently fix it entirely, though.

Well that's pretty sweet.

Yeah, another tasty bite Oculus got out of Valve's CR team.
I wish that Oculus would actually show what they're working on with all these brilliant people, though.

Unity announces support for Hololens

Hundreds of Hololenses available for testing at Build 2015
http://techcrunch.com/2015/04/29/microsoft-has-hundreds-of-hololens-devices-for-devs-to-test-at-build
Even if Hololens is a total gimmick and the device itself doesn't live up to expectations at all (i.e. super small FoV, bad holographic screen, bugs, practicality of it) I love the fact that its super high concept and they aren't afraid to shoot for that. At the very least, it is the first real stepping stone to making stuff like this a reality in the future if this first device isn't the thing that makes it work well.

Gen 1 is always clumsy as fuck, Hololens won't be an exception. I doubt they can get the FoV that high. We'll get reports in the upcoming days of the new prototypes (the "hundreds" they have waiting for testing at Build 2015), and we will find out if the FoV is better or not.
if hololens actually turns out to be like that, it's going to be super fucking impressive
Killing would start to disgust me if someone actually died from what I did. Other than that... It just takes a sane mind to be able to distinguish the difference between reality and VR. However, I do agree that in some cases (I'm thinking extreme autism?) people won't be able to make that difference anymore.
Admittedly my VR experience is limited to using a DK2 in a few 10 minute demos at PAX, but I'm not sure I agree with you here. When you put on a modern VR headset, a good pair of immersive headphones, and are using realistic input devices, there is ABSOLUTELY a sensation of detachment from reality.
If I really thought hard I could picture what I actually looked like outside of the VR environment (like a goofass wearing a bulky set of goggles and headphones), but when all of your senses are basically being tricked into believing that you are doing something else, I think its a natural to have some difficultly separating reality from game, and you would absolutely feel a more visceral reaction when shooting someone. I remember just the changeover to first person in GTA:V made things feel a hell of a lot more brutal, I imagine VR and realistic input devices would be like that but even more intense.
Im not saying it's going to make people violent, but I think you'd have to basically be a robot to deny that killing someone in an immersive VR environment elicits more of a reaction than killing someone in a third person game on a TV.
Sold my dev kit 2 on ebay for around $450 (wtf).
Ordered the half size metal gear rex and will order the ray when it comes out. They will look cooler collecting dust than the rift did.
And don't get me wrong, it was cool. But I never developed anything for it and at some point soon unobjectivley better headsets will come out.
Hololens reports coming in, field of view is still tiny.

I'm done with my dissertation testing now, so if anyone in the UK would like to buy my well cared for DK2 (with custom foam comfort inserts) let me know!
The holographic area is less extensive than I thought. It’s a rectangle in front of your eyes but if you have a good side vision (like I have), it’s a bit unsettling because the hologram will be cropped when you move the head.

First impressions: I’ve seen 3D before, but I’m surprised how quickly my eyes and brain accept a virtual object in a physical world. It’s very impressive. There is one big limitation I see with the device right now and that is the clipping boundaries. When you’re wearing the device, there’s only a relatively small rectangle of your field of vision that can see the virtual objects. If you’re not looking in that rectangle, you don’t see the objects. It’s hard to say the size of this rectangle, but I would say you can think of sitting on your couch watching a decent-sized TV. The TV screen is roughly the amount of your vision within this clipping boundary. So as I’m walking around looking at the virtual jeep, I notice it is sometimes clipped. I’m sure the technology will adapt to expand this soon.
Basically everyone who has tried it says it's amazing and revolutionary but the FoV of the current version is a huge downside.
Apparently it has no visible pixels and no jitter even when moving your head quickly, all the visuals are solid and have no translucency.

Someone really has to give a breakdown of all the tech that went into the HoloLens because I won't allow pure magic to exist in my reality.

no shit limited field of view is small.
but yeah, don't believe it for a second that it has no translucency IE cast black over optics. (without lcd which I don't see).
I suppose having the FoV be bad on it is by far the best problem for it to have, there are so many other things that could be bad about it instead. FoV is an easy problem to fix, even though it might increase costs.

Let's just hope that the tech itself doesn't have a FoV cap of some sort before things start breaking down.
Tried out the Surge demo at a friend's place omggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg that was cool
I got to try a rift for a little bit yesterday.
I didn't have enough time to actually move around in the game, but simply looking around was awesome. Everything had depth and I loved it.
Valve's SteamVR integration for Unity supports the Rift out of the box. Even better: you can launch your game from the editor directly onto your Rift in both Direct and Extended mode without doing any workarounds like the Oculus integration needed up till now.

Doc Ok (well respected VR researcher on Reddit) got a shot at HoloLens and wrote down his feedback and technical speculation here: http://doc-ok.org/?p=1223
One myth he seems to have dispelled at least is that the HoloLens supposedly had opaque pixels. In bright environments holographic objects will still be barely visible.
