Going to be interesting to see what devs will do with it.
woah, steam is going all out on their hardware front
i've preordered the steam controller and streaming box
Before Rift who was really trying to develop VR technologies through the use of head mounted displays? I'm talking in the 2000-2012 time period. Was the US government funding a few small private firms to create such a thing for the purposes of military training?
it was super expensive consumer stuff (like cinemizer headsets), military and research, really

Glove tracking for CV1 confirmed?
[editline]5th June 2015[/editline]
5 more days for CV1 event!
I can't help but think that this industry will be hindered by the lack of technology that allows users to sense taste touch and smell. What can be done to remedy this and how far off is the hardware?
Imagine playing Spec Ops: The Line with full see/smell/touch/hear/taste senses
You could finally smell the ashes in Half Life 2.

So, the smell thing? Walt Disney Company's had that on lock for decades. If you've ever visited their parks, all the smells in the shops, on main street, and in the smaller restaurants are synthetic. They use machines called Smellitizers, which pump accurate fragrances through the vent system in certain areas. Shrink that down, make it cartridge-based and blendable, maybe include two dozen of the most common scents in a videogame, and you've got a hardware solution for smell.
Touch? That's a bit harder. There's a company doing force feedback gloves, though, so maybe that'll go somewhere.
there is an HMD that does that, I think it was being kickstarted recently
I'm thinking of getting google cardboard. does anyone know what the "best" one would be? Preferably one that causes the least amount of motion sickness. I still don't know much about the technical aspects of VR, but I'm very excited to try it.

It looks like that damn cat can test it before us.
Silly cat, you can't use VR.
The headstrap doesn't even fit.
I'm genuinely curious how animals ( say, a chimpanzee or maybe a dog ) would react to VR.
Besides utter confusion I guess
Theres his hyper-active Irish guy named Jacksepticeye that's done some Oculus stuff including Mirrors edge, rollercoasters, windlands, and a bunch of other stuff.
Oh god, not Jacksepticeye. Even Markiplier has more intelligent things to say. I still powered through a couple of videos though because the power of the Oculus beats the power of cringe.
I like CymaticBruce, this chill black dude, but he hasn't been too active lately.
Recently discovered this dude, doesn't have much content but I'm fond of his accent.
Mathasgames does VR stuff occasionally. His videos are worth watching just for the commentary, though.
Except for the Huniepop series. That's just cringe incarnate.

The Cardboard itself doesnt actually have any effect on motion sickness, it is literally a face-mounted holder for your phone with two lenses stuck in it.
All of the processing power/latency is based entirely on the phone you stick into it, so if you have a really nice phone, the latency will be better, and you'll get less motion sickness. Buying a better Cardboard is just going to make it more comfortable/ergonomic/durable.
I'm interested in hearing more about the customscreen in the morpheus headset.
From what I understand, the 'resolution' is higher towards the middle and lower near the edges, so the middle might be '4k' and then drop to 1080p and then 720p and maybe 480p at the very edges? Then the resolution is a total of 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Something like this

It sounds brilliant to me. I've never heard of this sort of screen, has something like this been made before? I don't see why it would have, it seems VR is the only logical reason to make such a screen.
Judging by impressions this design seems to work great and the screen door effect is a tad bit better than the Vive and much better than the previous Oculus iteration.
Also, what is with all the naysayers and the morpheus? I wonder why so many people are doubting it while they accept that cell phones can do VR, while being barely comparable to a PS3 and 1/8th as capable as a PS4. Especially with all the positive impressions from basically everyone who tried it. Oh well.
Because to them Sony is the "playstation company" (and not a mass producer of electronics in general).

phones don't do 90+hz video; currently and for the near future phones won't be an actual vr contender beyond absolute enthusiasts
it is doubtful that the ps4 will have compelling VR experiences that can run at an appropriate framerate for VR purposes

It seems that pretty much everyone who has tried it loves it. Presence is much more important than graphics in vr anyway.
Why is it doubtful that ps4 can run a game at 1080p & 60 fps with side by side 3d?
It handled the demos in the video fine and it's got enough juice to handle the metro games at almost perfect 60 fps mostly high settings and CoD ghost at over 90fps too. It will be fine.
You just said it yourself. Presence is most important. You can't get that from 60fps.
Everyone loves the DK1 too if they're at an event to show it off.

So all the many impressions saying that it had incredible presence are lies or hype-triggered placebo effects?

I'm not inclined to buy into event showfloor fervor.

Noooo.... And it's probably better that way.

Have you tried a vr headset yet?

But a lot of people get presence in the DK2, and that's only got a 75hz refresh rate.
You're naysaying, bitches. We'll let these things play out, and we can pass judgment when we see the product firsthand. Not everything Palmer Luckey says is gospel, I'd wager a lot of what they've been saying has been primarily to put their product in the spotlight. Remember when they were planning to ship a slightly upgraded DK2 as CV1, before the Valve and Facebook things? Before all this talk about "90hz is required for presence," which only started to show up when they realized they could get 90hz OLED panels from Samsung?
Every one of these companies wants to put out the best VR headset, and they want consumers to know that their product is the absolute best on the market. I'm not saying they've lied to us, but I have to wonder what's marketing and what's realistic.
