Tbh, i think its fair to say upgrading to a 970/980 now could be pointless. With the possibility of cv1 coming early 2016, nvidia could very well release a card that outperforms them
True, but the 970/980 will drop in price come early 2016 offering a cheaper alternative for gamers on a budget that cannot afford the latest card.
I think AR right now is generally a very silly concept, and I don't see myself wearing a pair of ski goggles from Back to the Future any time soon. The FoV still needs work on the hololens (thats such a silly name, like something from a corny sci-fi movie) as apparently it "looks like a 16:9 monitor 6-7 inches from your face". I'm sure it'll be improved for the consumer version tho, it's still 1-2 years off.
I don't know but I want to see him headbutt his way through that door.
if you stand way back from your tracking camera, face straight to the left from it, and move off to the side of its view so you're looking out of it, then reset your view so it thinks that's the default 'sitting in your chair' position, you would probably have enough room to walk across the camera's view to the opposite extent and clip your face through the door/wall
This thing 'Tested' looked at looks promising. It gets rid of the space between pixels so you don't see the grid. I know I know, the thumbnail looks like Norm put his headphones on the wrong way.
That does look really cool

The Glyph is not a VR headset. It's basically a more modern version of Sony's HMDs that they've been pushing forever. It looks like a TV screen a few feet in front of you, there's no head tracking, and it can't hit the framerates required for immersive VR.
I talked about something similar a while back, was testing out the zeiss 'cinemizer', with a headtracking add-on. HMDs trying to jump on the oculus hype train miss 100% of the point of VR
There is head tracking though.
headtracking on an HMD is nothing but a shoddy gimmick. The view is not suitable for the action and you should not treat a standard HMD as anything other than a private stationary screen
just sayin
imagine strapping paper towel cardboard tubes to your face, and at the end of the tubes are fisheye lenses most of the time the headtracking is tied to being a gyroscopic mouse instead of any form of proper positional tracking, so any game navigation will be super hacky. I believe people did something similar to get portal running in oculus way back when the DK1 was still fresh, that was a wild ride

A 3DHead employee is answering some questions over on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2tclqs/greetings_from_3d_head/
Hello from some employees of the company that made 3D Head. Here is one of our great new products. The hat killer. In all seriousness, we fully know what 3D Head is to everyone around here but we're just innocent employees caught up in this. We just thought you guys would get a laugh out of this.
Apparently the product itself was designed by just one guy :v:

I wouldn't mind retinal projection for later Rifts if they can nail the resolution and latency, but who knows when that'll be. Coming up with a hmd/vr/whatever that is actually super functional and DOESNT make you look like an asshole is the real challenge [editline]23rd January 2015[/editline] I mean the rift must be the least stupid looking but some of these things look straight out of startrek

So visiting a friend today who just got a DK2 What demos should we try out other than Titans of Space? [editline]25th January 2015[/editline] Is that HL2-rift thing released at all, with real weapon aiming? I remember seeing a video on it.
titans of space is very boring if your friend is fun you should play Just One Dance :v: Hopefully your friend has a good GPU. For a smooth experience, set the rift to direct mode and try these demos: Before anything, set your height, eye relief, and lense type in the oculus config. Ignore the IPD setting for now. You're probably going to need to use the B lenses (most people do). Try the config demo, use your mouse to control the one on the giant TV, and sit up straight and press the calibrate/recenter button. Remember that the eye-cup things are adjustable, like old 5$ clickey headphones. The config has a setting for that. You'll likely be using the mode most compressed, which in the config means eye relief in. For the demos below, make sure to run the 'directtorift' exe. Firstly, Welcome to Oculus, https://share.oculus.com/app/welcome-to-oculus The Tuscany demo from Oculus, https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/ Sightline: The Chair, https://share.oculus.com/app/sightline-the-chair Vox Machinae, https://share.oculus.com/app/vox-machinae Windlands, https://share.oculus.com/app/windlands Birdy King Land, http://www.birdykingland.com/ [editline]25th January 2015[/editline] going through all of these means spending quite a long time to both experience these [editline]25th January 2015[/editline] you better have an xbox controller [editline]25th January 2015[/editline] if you have the entire afternoon, some others to try: star trek TNG engineering, https://share.oculus.com/app/tng-engineering Mobias 1.2 (huge download), https://share.oculus.com/app/mobias alt+enter to switch this one into direct mode it seems like little, but actually has exploration, a mermaid, a [sp]dinosaur[/sp], an underground temple to find, etc (this demo takes a ton of time, but the graphics try to do more than the rift's resolution can make look good, and the ultimate effect is that spending forever in this demo makes your eyes want to scream) Don't Let Go has some fun spacial sound, https://share.oculus.com/app/dont-let-go [editline]25th January 2015[/editline] oh and, to your question, don't try half life today half life requires "extended mode", which is a travesty to set up on some configurations you don't want to spend all day fiddling to make it work just because valve never updated it to direct mode support
extended mode works way better for most demos atm
From what I've read on r/oculus, and my own personal experience, direct mode works perfectly now. So long as a game/demo supports direct mode, it gives me zero hassle.
Direct mode has a performance impact in some cases. It is the preferred method though, so use it if it works.
Someone made a VR AR simulator so you can see how limiting HoloLens's low FoV can be: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hofovgi1jpp9zro/AR-Sim.rar?dl=0
1 and 2 adjust Horizontal FOV 3 and 4 adjust Vertical FOV. Tab to toggle text. Esc to quit.
pretty meta
