we have one of those in my office and it has been the biggest waste of money, I just went off on a long rant about that junk here not too long ago
like it's cool and the experience is better than oculus DK1 (and arguably an easier concept to grasp for people who are adverse to the idea of an HMD), but the fucker was beyond expensive, the software hasn't seen much of an upgrade since the 90's, and it's visually awful. Using four projections facing in toward each other causes severe whitewashing
yeah the best I've seen are custom rigs which I think only are built on compasses. For instance one of them I used had the projectors onto the wall then behind it. Problem was at the time they are or were using ogre and unity was single core, unreal 4 or unity 5 would be best for them if they can get it to work.
This is probably one of the easiest and best articles I've found that describes VR design lessons and what VR will mean for the games industry:
http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/JesseSchell/20150626/247113/Making_Great_VR_Six_Lessons_Learned_From_I_Expect_You_To_Die.php
At least I share the same opinion. VR will be a niche but it will likely be THE niche for hardcore gamers. Something beyond the best experiences games can offer right now. It's neither going mainstream (unless there's a truly massive fad), nor will it fall flat on its face and die out again. It's a whole new market.
a whole fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no, it's got to go, or say we're only dreaming.
Also that VR puzzle game from the article is pretty neat: https://share.oculus.com/app/i-expect-you-to-die
I see VR as being no more unsustainable than enthusiast pc gaming. The market may not be huge, maybe not even influential, but it's so engrossing and both the experience and the mod scene is so addictive that it will probably be permanent.

pc gaming is huge as fuck what are you talking about
have you been talking to razer?
I said enthusaist pc gaming. Dual 980s. That shit.
it doesn't take dual 980s to run rift games, only one 970 (which is relatively low priced)

Dude you do not understand his point. He is saying that the VR market will be small and loyal in the same way the high end PC market is.
Personally, I see us as early adopters and predict that VR will end up bigger than we could ever imagine.

I'll agree with this. All the naysayers don't look past tomorrow, or next week. Yes, VR is going to start slow. Give it two or three hardware revisions, five years down the road? I think we'll all be very surprised where it ends up.
This could be one of the big things. We're fifteen years into the century, VR could well be one of the biggest advances this time. If we were doing this fifty years ago, it would have been the centerpiece of a World's Fair.
Something I'm working on:

saw it on garry's twitter, good stuff man
How big of a space did you guys set up with the chaperone system? You seem to run into it often during that demo.

How do you like the Vive so far?

About 3m x 4m which seems pretty big, the walls kept coming up because I was mainly sticking to one corner.

It's phenomenal, having way too much fun with it.

Giant Bomb was full of VR skeptics and going over their impressions of E3 all of them walked away convinced that VR is here to stay. It was the one big talking point consistently brought up among the staff and guests that they had on their show, and one of the big reasons why this year was the strongest E3 in years for them.
Some of them aren't really sure if this first run of devices is really gonna be what "sells" it in a big way (it depends on how good the games are for it at launch), but unanimously pretty much agreed they can't imagine a world where VR isn't going to get big in the next 5-10 years.
The end goal of this tech is stuff like Oculus Rift contact lenses, to where you don't even need to wear anything else. Combines VR/AR into one perfect experience. We are a ways off of that, but it almost seems inevitable at this point.
That minecraft thing made me think of Zeus for Arma 3. Like you could play as a DM for people in minecraft.

If a game like the sims had this way of looking around like you're a god or like a dollhouse, I would so instantly buy a rift.
(not that I'm not already gonna do so)

finally a way to play with a dollhouse without the embarrassment of someone walking in on you and knowing it's happening
A discussion of their big impressions at the show (suprise: its about VR):
https://youtu.be/ysKExiHQvd4?t=15m48s
Relevant discussion lasts 10ish minutes
And a great discussion GB has with industry vets who were skeptics on their thoughts about VR:
https://youtu.be/ysKExiHQvd4?t=3h12m10s
Relevant discussion lasts 20ish minutes
You see and hear stuff like this from skeptics that are actually there on the ground floor experiencing this tech emerging, and it is hard to walk away not a believer.

Yea cause with a rift and head phones on, you'll never know who walks in on you.

They could even have a baseball bat!

introducing the rift deluxe home kit!

Needs more unfounded paranoia.

Great, now with this kit, I can finally play virtual doll house without fear of social awkwardness.
Is VRFocus taking the piss? They published a supposedly new interview with a HTC rep today, however I'm certain that's from GDC!
Just compare these two:

It's the same booth. In the first video you can even see an Alienware Steam Machine ad going on towards the end on the left TV, and before that game trailers, just like in the Tested vid. lol

It could easily be a reupload or something. I don't see anything at all claiming it is new.
