Valve will be demoing something VR related during the dota 2 internationational tournament.
I wonder how well would dota2 work as a VR game, where you're playing as if in front of a table where everything happens.
So, I've got the cash for a 970 right now. Is it worth buying that for a VR setup next year, or will the 15-20% performance increase in the next generation really be necessary for good VR performance?
Wait until next year
Nvidia won't release the Pascal cards until next summer, though, going by past release schedules. Accounting for the two months of limited availability due to demand, that's literally a year from now. This money will be gone by then, I guarantee it.
At least if I get a 970 now, I can get in on the ground floor when the Rift launches in February-March, and I actually get to enjoy modern PC games until then. I'm tired of Elite running at 16FPS.
I mean, hell, if I'm going to have to wait until next September to get a new graphics card for VR, I may as well just get this one now and use it until I need to upgrade.
Everyone's clamouring about how VR porn is going to take off... but to be really honest, none of what I've seen so far is really any good. It's either creepy, stupidly awkward, or full of distracting visual artefacts. In the end I wonder if spatial immersion really does anything meaningful in porn.
anime
although all we have so far is rubbish with PS2-level models

sounds like you have justified it to yourself already, but personally I agree with Orkel if you want the most bang for your buck, wait

That might be just regular demos. The Vive truck will be there after next week, so these might be for the players and all. If not, then hopefully the VR spectator modes. The tabletop one and the first-person lane one.

Anime or not, CGI VR porn currently works much better than shitty 360 video.

I'll be honest, I'm on a 560TI right now. Anything's an upgrade.
I'll be honest, I'm on a 560TI right now. Anything's an upgrade.
then just go for it bro, though you'll have the 970's gimped memory
wasn't there a company that scanned in people better and had a VR demo?
Saw this idea on reddit. One big thing valve could do for the vive sales is to bundle it with $100 or more free credit for the Steam store.
Or release a new orange box with (optional) VR tracking. That would boost sales immensely if they released the right games.
I can see it now:
It's E3 2k16
Gabe comes rolling on stage
"So uhm, you thought we couldn't count to three, bitches!?"
*The Background-screen reveals Portal 3, Left 4 dead 3 and Half-Life 3
A 3 game bundle with VR headsets included for a small fee.
The internet would explode..
then just go for it bro, though you'll have the 970's gimped memory
Won't affect me, I've only got a 1080p monitor. Everything hits 100+ on high or better in benchmarks. If I need something better for VR, I'll upgrade.

Speaking of graphics cards, I'm planning to get a HTC Vive, should I do it with a 750 Ti?
That GPU ain't going to cut it.
That GPU ain't going to cut it.
I dunno, I'm running my rift on a 780 and I have SIGNIFICANTLY more power than I need. Unless the Vive needs a lot more graphics horsepower than the rift, it shouldn't be that much of an issue.

That's for early demos. And pixel throughput for the Vive and consumer Rift (2160x1200@90hz) is going to be around 50% higher than it is for the DK2's 1080p on 75hz.
Would a 770 cut it? I've been thinking of upgrading, but all this talk is making me think I'd be better off waiting an extra 6 months
The best is hardware that doesn't exist yet at a reasonable consumer price for 90hz at 1440p.
Pyrion talking about Vive VR demos and mentions a Dota Secret Shop demo at 4:20 (this was among the found pics couple of months ago), so it's probably the Dota VR demo and not spectating :(
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgJBfKyTmyw
edit: he actually talks about spectating at 10:20, but says they're still working on it, has framerate issues

But that's probably not going to be around for a few years. We're going to need more than a 20% performance increase per year for that to be possible.
My thoughts are, there's a reason the recommended specs for the Rift CV1 are currently listed as "GTX 970 or better."
I'd say a 980 is about where the baseline for realistic VR is, beyond cel-shaded art styles and low-poly environments.
I'm sure there's a way to test this in games where Rift support is built-in. Up the resolution, run it in Rift mode, and check your framerates. If you're getting over 90 all the time, you're probably good.
I mean, we're going to be in a period at the launch of both the Vive and the Rift where reasonably-priced consumer hardware won't be available on the market. I'm sure, at least for early games, Oculus's recommended system specs will be more than suitable.

Been toying with my own VR space game this weekend. The scale difference is really fun to play with (the video doesn't do it justice, though the difference in headtracking translation should give a hint). By switching cameras I go from huge spaceships to toy spaceships. Want to play with a concept where a VR player is a 'RTS commander', while other players controls ships in the field. It's really fun to see the action whizzing around your head.
i don't know if to get the Vive for the slightly higher specs + early delivery or the oculus for the amount of games being made specifically for it.
More VR news for DCS.
They've updated their VR code with the latest Oculus SDK and are continuing experimenting with the VIVE. There are still no promises for the VIVE, it's just experimentation for now.
Question: Has there been any considering to integrating 3D input devices like the Leap Motion controller?
We've definitely looked at them. The problems, at least the ones we're aware of, is that the area the controller looks at is essentially right in front of you in your keyboard area. If we developed support for controllers like this, we want to do so in regard to a VR system, because that's where it really shines.
The problem is that with a VR cockpit you have controls off to your left, off to your right, even behind you. When you try to manipulate those type of controls. Your hand and finger movement can be well outside the area tracked by those motion controls. At this time, we're really not planning on supporting those, just because we really want it to be applicable to the VR experience in a cockpit.
Now hopefully at a later point, there'll be some kind of advances and changes to these type of controllers and we'll look at them, but right now it's not something we really planned.
Wags' answer sounds like he's specifically addressing the Leap Motion. However, I do wonder how useful even Oculus Touch controllers would be for a flight sim. You'd think flipping switches would be a natural fit for the SteamVR wands or Oculus Touch, but in a flight sim there's one very big problem. You're not always holding the motion controllers.
In a flight sim your hands will be on the HOTAS. To use any kind of motion control system to physically touch switches in the cockpit, you'll need to let go of either the stick or throttle, pick up one of the wands, use it to click a switch, set it down, then put your hands back on the HOTAS. That's neither a smooth or effective thing to do.

they haven't mentioned how small you could feasibly make the lighthouse detectors
but in theory couldn't you have something like altimeter gloves with lighthouse detectors on them, and it detects a pinch or something
no need to swap things
I upgraded to a 970 recently from a 760. Roommate had his card fry, so I sold him my 760 for $80 or so and used it as an excuse to upgrade. Don't regret it at all.
After selling my game coupons and the rebate (which I've yet to get) was only $250-ish.
Its great being able to max games like Witcher 3 out no problem. And that I'll be "VR-ready" in the future. Only real bottleneck in my system is my 2500K... but honestly after overclocking it still is a beast.
I was tempted to go AMD but the game coupons on top of me really liking how Nvidia works software/driver side made me avoid. I really wish I had that full "4GB" advertised but the pros over the 290 for me were too much to want to go to AMD just for a measly 500mb extra video ram that will never likely end up being a big dealbreaker down the line.
If you are 100% satisfied with your video card right now and are only interested in upgrading for VR, don't bother getting a video card now. Wait until VR actually comes early next year. If you have a reason to upgrade now though, but still want to be VR ready, totally go for it.

Don't worry about the 4Gb problem. I asked some of the computer guys around the forum about it, it's drastically overblown. There's a minor increase in frame times, but it's negligible at best. You'll probably never notice it unless you're running 4K.
VR SLI's also supposed to come into its own on the 970/980, so worst case you can pick up another for the other eye.

i5 2500k isn't a bottleneck though? The graphics card is way more important in VR than the CPU is, it won't have any problems whatsoever.

What about an i7-2600 and a 970?
