Cloudhead Games talk about their locomotion system, Blink
Put your finger about a foot in front of your face and then move it to your nose, you will go cross eyed. A lot of people think that's what happens when you use a rift etc, BUT IT'S NOT because shit doesn't look like it's right in front of your face!
WHY is this so hard to understand?
I've used both a Rift and a Vive. You go cross-eyed when virtual stuff is moved close between your eyes.

When I said "looking at stuff close up" I meant stuff in the game you are playing.

Anyone else glad that there is some sort of way to move around long distances whilst standing, but kind of worried that you won't be able to just sit down and use WASD or a controller to move yourself traditionally?
I actually really enjoy using my DK2 in something like Half-Life 2 and just using WASD. Feels fine, and makes me feel pretty immersed. I just don't want to only have the option to "blink", or what Valve talked about with the room scaling down so you can take two steps to move.

well yeah but that's the same as if you were looking at something close up in real life
well yeah but that's the same as if you were looking at something close up in real life
With the difference that the background is just as sharp as the object you're focussing on (no depth of field difference like irl), making it a bit weird. Hence why designers should avoid putting objects too close to your face.

Although in games that let you put your head through things without fading them out it can be a problem.

Cloudhead Games just released a video that discusses their solutions for that sort of stuff. Also pretty neat locomotion system for roomscale VR:

Edit: whoops very late.

I actually think it's p cool that Unity is going from being babbys first indie game engine to something legitimate thanks to VR

It's always been a competent engine it was just so easy to use that people with no idea how to make a game were pumping out shit and giving it a bad name.

I wouldnt say that's because of VR dude, quite a few big name games have been made in Unity. It was "legitimate" well before its VR compatibility was announced
not to say that VR isnt a good thing for it (it's a great thing for unity and VR in general), but you gotta give it more credit than that :v:

scot you ninja fuck
The cool thing about Unity is that it's still 'babby's first game engine' (that's worth the effort) second only to UE Blueprint imo.
If only the Unity editor would support Linux...
I remember when Cartoon Network made their MMO in Unity. That engine's come a long way.

that freaky deviantart-anime-revisioning of all their IPs still gives me nightmares and experiencing it in VR would be the worst

That's genuinely horrifying.
Going to Pax Prime? There will be plenty of Vive content to check out this year. More info to come over the next few weeks.
Is EVE Valkyrie OR exclusive? Or would you be able to play it on a Vive aswell?
Yes, for now it's Rift exclusive on PC, but they haven't ruled out other VR platforms.
im sure there will be rift emulators for vive or something similar
