Why not both?
cos you can only use one at a time to watch po
why not get one and wait for emulation or whatever. There will most likely be people crazy enough to make rift games work with vive.

it would make more sense to get the vive and then emulate rift games if that's the case, you can't emulate body scanning/motion tracking sensor hardware
If the vive manages somehow better specs and somewhat reasonable price, im gonna have to go with that.
But then again, cant oculus with 2 cameras do the same as vive?
I'm getting both because 1 I'm a sucker and 2 future collectors value. I got oculus DKs for those very reasons as well.

no, it's far inferior to the lighthouse system
cant oculus with 2 cameras do the same as vive?
It has yet to be fully shown.

You mean something like lighthouse is more accurate, has lower latency?
It has yet to be fully shown.
true, but there's still no way it matches up to the lighthouse laser tracking system. cameras cannot compare to lasers. the vive is built ground up to be based on the motion tracking system, it's not simply an addon (although it can be ignored if desired)
though the camera usage is more cost effective, and the lighthouse system could be very very expensive

exactly, it's just not comparable to a web camera, etc

Didn't they say Lighthouse parts were only like $50? It's a tried and true technology.

cost of production yeah maybe, but I don't think they've given any solid numbers. still doesn't tell us anything about how much htc is going to charge us
a htc rep at gamescom said the pricing would be premium or something similar
Oh well, oculus will probably show full-room tracking later this year, and im probably not going to make a decision before i see black on white numbers on cost, latency, and accuracy.

Relevant info in the OP. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive (SteamVR) will be the biggest players on PC, but will require a beefy computer. On the mobile front you have the GearVR.
Speaking of the GearVR, there's speculation that its next iteration, that'll probably be shown at Oculus Connect next month, will be a standalone system instead of requiring a Samsung smartphone. Carmack is telling people to wait with buying Samsung's stuff until they release "relevant info" at Connect.

Wait until they are actually out, and you will almost definitely need more than a simple HDMI connection

Aren't they all Displayport right now?
Wait until they are actually out, and you will almost definitely need more than a simple HDMI connection
Yeah you're probably going to need like 4 USB 3.0 ports as well (for vive at least). Unless it's all streamlined through some magnificent base station (doubtful). My computer only has 2. Good thing I'm realizing this now instead of 4 or 5 months from now, phew.
Vive will only need one cable.
I'd guess just HDMI and one USB

4 USB ports for what? The beacons don't need to be connected to the computer.

the controllers and headset and I figured there'd be a receiver for the beacons so don't mind me.

the controllers r wireless, bru
no way right on

I'm guessing there's a hub in there somewhere?
I'm guessing there's a hub in there somewhere?
The Vive devkit at least uses HDMI + 1 USB + power for the HMD, and 1 USB for the wireless dongle for each controller, which they recommend you use a USB hub for that comes in the box. So in the end it just uses 2 USB slots for HMD + up to 4 controllers. The lighthouse base stations just need power.

One for each individual controller or each controller pair?
One for each individual controller or each controller pair?
Each individual controller, but they give you a USB hub with 4 ports
I wish wireless was a thing for the vive HMD - I worry a lot about getting tangled walking around or spinning the cable into a knot.

Oh, so I wasn't too far off. It's sweet that they give you a hub.

Too bad the latency isn't low enough for that to properly work (yet?). Shouldn't be too bad if you guide the wires upwards though.

The transmission and receiving latency is quite low actually. The problem is mainly bandwidth. Most of the latency in wireless transmissions comes from compressing and decompressing data.
