It's a big no-no. If you want proper VR, either you get a desktop PC with a Vive/Rift, or a mobile headset like the Gear.
the 980m is powerfull as fuck though.
the 980m is powerfull as fuck though.
That's all well and good, but its going to be powering that high refresh rate display; break that frame rate and say bye bye to the immersion factor and the creation of a potential sickness induction.

I did the desktop and laptop combo for a while and I completely despised it, and I've never had an incentive to go back because gaming laptops that run pretty much any game at a framerate I'm totally happy with have seriously come down in price. VR's the only thing that's ever threatened that stance but I'd need a really convincing argument for why not to use a laptop if there's laptops available that can outperform a desktop 980 available now and even better ones coming out down the road.
A laptop only works with VR if it doesn't have Optimus (gfx switching) tech and your Rift is directly connected to the discrete card. Also with the min spec being a GTX 970 / R9 290, finding comparable horsepower for a laptop is an expensive affair. I opted to build a mini-ITX desktop build that I can lug around in a sizeable suitcase if I want to demo somewhere. Not really useful for daily use but handy enough for events and such.

That's part of why I was waiting to see how the new gpus end up doing, because I figure the next generation mobile cards might not need to be in SLI to outdo the current gen desktop cards.
You absolutely have to ensure that the laptop does not use optimus, which routes the gpu through cpu where output gets arbitrarily locked to 60fps
Twitch Plays Dark Souls got greedy on O&S just now: EDIT: WRONG THREAD FUCK.
I have Windows 10 and Oculus 0.7. Is there any way I can play Morrowind with the Oculus? Or older tech demos such as Dreadhalls? I know with most games I have to wait until later this month when Ralph releases VorpX 0.9.
I was reminded of the lyrics to Willy Wonka's "Pure Imagination" song while watching this. Can't wait to see what sort of new kinds of art we get to witness the creation of with VR coming back to life.

it kinda makes me sad because I know I will never be able to do anything of worth in that app
I'm having trouble with the rift software. It works perfectly in the first application I run, but when I close it and start a new one, it runs at about 1fps, or the rift just mirrors my main screen but completely jumbled. I have to completely restart my computer to fix it, which obviously sucks. I'm on windows 10 with runtime 0.7.

Vanishing of Ethan Carter's UE4 port is out, with rudimentary VR support. Some discussion and settings to tweak can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/3kljsb/psa_the_ue4_version_of_vanishing_of_ethan_carter/
Just tried it out, it's not really playable yet. Performance isn't great (my R9 290 can't keep it stable on lowest settings), and the interface hasn't been adjusted for VR at all. Plus there were some bugs.

I'm doing a game jam, and it obviously wasn't helping my productivity to restart my computer every time I wanted to test something.
Ethan Carter's VR support was unintended, they're planning on adding proper 100% VR support Q1 2016: https://twitter.com/adrianchm/status/642792961856696320

I have high hopes for VR, I'm waiting for it almost 20 years and have some ideas where it could go. But I still think that living room VR, like what Morpheus wants to be, will be just a gimmick like motion controllers were.
I have high hopes for Morpheus but I'm also giddily awaiting the day we find out some title built for it is locked to 30fps
