you can also get the Zeiss VR ONE for 100 bones, they've got a few phone mounts and provide the data for 3D printing mounts for many more or you could do cardboard OR you could just save up for oculus and vive
I was honestly pretty pleased with the tracking ability of my S4, and I feel like newer phones would have even better accelerometers. The whole Gear thing doesnt really seem necessary.
Just realized that the trains in Epic's Bullet Train demo look exactly like the Sprinter trains we have here in the Netherlands. Probably based on the same model. [editline]24th September 2015[/editline] Carmack has started talking. And apparently he's more excited than he's ever been at a keynote.
that does appear to be an identical train, minus the logos and secondary color the company uses (likely for legality)
God damn, I can't multi-task during a Carmack talk like I can with other streams. I have to fully focus on him to process everything he's saying. [editline]24th September 2015[/editline] Lol, Carmack kept bugging Mojang to let him make a VR port of Minecraft. [editline]24th September 2015[/editline] Tom Forsyth is actively translating Carmack's "Higher Geek" language, and adding other trivia.
This talk is extremely Carmack
Carmack's really fucking passionate about VR Minecraft. Apparently it went to CEO level (Zuckerberg sitting down with Mojang's CEO) to get the deal through :v:
Carmack's really fucking passionate about VR Minecraft. Apparently it went to CEO level (Zuckerberg sitting down with Mojang's CEO) to get the deal through :v:
Let's be honest here, Minecraft VR has the biggest potential to be the "killer app" Oculus needs to reach a larger number of consumers. It's how my nephews heard about Oculus in the first place, seeing some random Youtuber using Oculus to play Minecraft. They never even Heard about VR before.
mincraft (and angrybirds but that's not quite as applicable here) are the kinds of things that will sell anything to a mass market of tiny crazed fans. It feels cheap to use that to ham-fistedly get oculus out to people who could then realize its other potentials
They need to give Carmack more time damnit.
I could've listened to Carmack talk for another few hours. RIP :(
Ugh, it's a crime that they only give him one hour. I know Oculus Connect has other important stuff going on with a tighter schedule than QuakeCon, but really, they need to give him the stage and let him do his thing for however long he wants. He makes a good effort to dispel a lot of misconceptions about the Vive and VR in general:
Any recordings of the Carmack talk?
Any recordings of the Carmack talk?
Right now there's just the Twitch highlight of all the keynotes, Carmack starts in the last quarter: http://www.twitch.tv/oculus/v/17538854
So when are we going to get some actual announcements? I know Palmer said no preorders yet but what about CV1 specs or pricing? Minecraft and Netflix is cool and I'm going to use them but I'd really like to know more about the headset itself
I wonder if they're making a point to not talk about specs yet? The last time they released significant figures, all the fanboys went around creating false competition between the other headsets, even though there was really nothing to compare it to.
http://www.pcgamer.com/oculus-rift-price/ "at least 300$"
http://www.pcgamer.com/oculus-rift-price/ "at least 300$"
That seems fair.
That seems fair.
yeah I was hoping it would be under 500$
I was reading about Carmack talking about virtual esports arena and watching sports together, and got me thinking: what if you would take a 360 camera, put it on some seat in the stadium(or just slightly above the crowd), stream that and watch it trough Oculus. You would stream the whole 360 view, and for each viewer locally it would be calculated what to display based on the head movement. Of course it comes with all the traditional disadvantages of watching a sport events on the stadium, but it would feel like you were there on the stadium among the crowd. This was probably mentioned 100 times, but it just crossed my mind how cool gimmick it would be.
That seems fair.
Not including Touch and a potential 2nd camera, right? I'd be worried if those combined bumped it up to $450 or more, it'd be a little steep with Vive having the room-scale stuff for only a bit more cash (potentially, at least).
at least 300 just means it's not less than that, it could still be anything, doesn't tell us anything really

Photogrammetry demos from the SteamVR team:
So explain that to me. Is that a scene created from some sort of photography or laser scanning? Why do they look so realistic?
Lordy!
Lordy!
that looks really scary and really expensive.
Rather than that I want some room/person sized like full on mechanical suit that functions as a omnidirectional treadmill. (Or something that directly simulates brain activity to create perfect vr) Someone should do a thread on /r/askscience, see if current neuroscience even thinks it's remotely possible.
That just looks so unnatural. It's bizarre. [editline]25th September 2015[/editline]
Rather than that I want some room/person sized like full on mechanical suit that functions as a omnidirectional treadmill. You just need a space big enough.
So explain that to me. Is that a scene created from some sort of photography or laser scanning? Why do they look so realistic?
Photogrammetry is based on photos. Takes some work in post to get it into a good looking 3D model though. And they look realistic because it's practically a 3D photograph. This also means nothing is dynamic, all the 'lighting' is baked into your photos already. There are some ways around this in order to use it in a game. Epic showed some neat tricks they did to 'de-light' photographed objects for their Open World demo in UE4 (can look that up on YT). [editline]26th September 2015[/editline] In other neat news, Touch and Vive controllers don't need a USB dongle, they communicate directly with their respective headsets: http://uploadvr.com/oculus-touch-controllers-communicate-directly-with-the-headsets-no-usb-dongles-required/

Neat. It'd be a cool way to open up inaccessible landmarks and monuments to people who would otherwise not be able to visit them. I've just had a thought as well. Has anyone thought to recreate the stuff ISIS has been destroying for a VR environment? It'd be a good way to preserve those sites for future generations, even though they no longer exist for us. You could even take it a step further, recreate those sites in the days they were created. It'd be a great educational tool, being able to put students right in the middle of a site and have them see it first person.
