Vive ships with motion controllers and full room tracking, and caters to the enthusiast experience. That's why I'm going for it. I'll probably end up eventually having the Rift as well though.
To be honest, as a person who's not following it intensely, I'm just going to wait for it to be released (because I need a new PC anyway) and then buy the one that looks the most worth the money. I say that because it's pretty unclear which will be the better quality product. I'm not too worried about price, just the best bang for my buck, if that makes sense
I wonder if the Vive will release in October still.
I wonder if the Vive will release in October still.
It was never supposed to release in October. The consumer version was going to be/will be revealed during a press event in October.
HTC has sent out notes that on Oct 20 they're revealing a new phone. VR Focus speculates if that's the Vive conference too: http://vrfocus.com/archives/22650/htc-sets-smartphone-reveal-for-october-consumer-vive-info-inbound/
I'd think that would be separate, but why send a notice to VR Focus too, though they're also right the Vive was revealed at their MWC conference.

I really like the system you have for moving around and being able to change the scale of the world. Seems like a pretty intuitive way of getting around the limits of the size of your play space.

as we revisit the image over the next few years, people end up photoshopped out, one by one
just got my hands on a DK2! what are some things I should try out with it? cool games with VR support?
after having played a few games, tried some experiences, and most importantly, watched VR porn, it doesn't feel as cool anymore. when I first tried it, it was absolutely mindblowing but after that one time, it's not the same. it's still really awesome, don't get me wrong, it was just not as awesome as I was expecting.

It's because you are using a DK2
It's because you are using a DK2
that's definitely a factor in this, the screendoor is really annoying. some games look absolutely dreadful due to the low amount of pixels they get to work with which could be, or pretty much is, an immersion breaker.

Which demos did you try?
Which demos did you try?
7 Nanocycles (though quickly gave up, couldn't get past first obstacle)
AmigdalaVR
Blackbox
Dreadhalls
I Expect You To Die
I tried Surge and The Shining Experience, but they wouldn't run on the latest runtime. I also tried to get HL2 to work, but I just got an error saying it couldn't start the HMD device, error 301 something. figured I'd give Minecraft VR a shot as well, but that couldn't find the DK2 either. apparently a lot of these demos / VR stuff doesn't support 0.7? I tried downgrading to 0.6 but then I couldn't get the DK2 to function at all, not even the built in demo.
I intend to try Elite: Dangerous today, downloaded it over night
Give Sightline, Titans of Space and Windlands a shot too. Don't know if their versions on Oculus Share are updated yet but they have 0.7 versions floating around.
Most of the value of these early VR demos is recognising the potential of future, fully featured experiences.
so in an attempt to downgrade my runtime again, this time to 0.5 to make stuff like Elite: Dangerous work, I broke my system. I can no longer start my PC other than in safe mode. I've tried uninstalling the runtime, still broken. I've tried installing the 0.7 runtime over the old one, still broken. I have no recovery points so I can't rewind my disk, how do can I fix this?

was able to fix this by removing some registry keys, however I don't remember the path. the files I had to remove sat in C:\Windows\System32 and I just searched for riftenabler.sys or something like that. deleted two files, rebooted, downgraded by drivers to Windows 8 GPU drivers, installed 0.5 again and everything works smoothly! I'm now able to play Minecraft with VR for example, I assume it'll work with HL2 and E:D as well

oh man the motion sickness kicks in real fast in games like Minecraft with VR

Field of view and framerate is important there. The DK2 can't push the framerates required for motion sickness to go away, and you've still got the movement issue (although that apparently gets better as you get your "VR legs," so to speak.)
The movement thing's still one of my biggest concerns with VR, actually. Blink movement seems unintuitive and inhibited, realspace positional tracking is restricted by the room size, treadmills are bulky and expensive, and stationary movement (traditional inputs) creates motion sickness until you get used to it.
Someone's going to have to figure out a good, intuitive, open movement system, I think. Blink systems are a good stopgap, but they feel way too slow and constricted to really be considered for more than their kind of game. They remind me too much of Myst, and the rest of late-90s adventure game design. VR needs true freedom of movement, and I'm not really sure how we can solve that.

I didn't get around to try Sightline, but Titans of Space was surprisingly cool! been playing around with VR for 4 hours now, feel like puking. the world is literally spinning for me and my legs aren't sure how to properly move anymore.
I was thinking of showing my grandpa this thing as he's coming over in an hour or two. need a relaxing demo with no gameplay to show him. Titans of Space might be a tad too long, but it could work. is Sightline a good candidate for this? I'd try it myself but right now I really need a break from this
Welcome to Oculus is pretty fun too. That and definitely show Titans of Space
Have you tried Vox Machinae? Looks pretty cool

Welcome to Oculus doesn't have a 0.7 version it appears, but I think I'll go ahead and show Titans of Space even if it might be a little long. hopefully he has the time.
he wears glasses though, will this be a problem for him? I don't know if he's near sighted or long sighted, all I know is that the glasses are custom made due to something misaligned in the eye. can he wear them as he uses the headset or does he have to take them off? will the lenses in the Oculus work for his eye sight from get go? I don't have the second pair of lenses as the headset isn't mine, I'm borrowing from my roommate

I know I didnt have any issues with my glasses (which have pretty big frames) when I was using a DK2.

Im very nearsighted as well, didnt have to adjust anything.

sounds like he may have astigmatism? I do too and it's not a big deal without the glasses. If you use the little screws on the headset's temples, you can extend the unit away from the eyes so you can fit glasses in there.
If he's far-sighted he doesn't need glasses at all, if near-sighted you may be able to swap out the lenses, but it's not the biggest deal due to the pixel density not being very high to create detail anyways. It's a mixed bag.
Am I the only one who thought Titans of Space was boring and over-hyped?
Windlands and Vox Machinae do a great job at depth feeling natural. Titans of Space just feels like watching a lot of giant colored circles.
