Got in contact with an Admin from CM, wouldn't clarify if it was removed from the codebase or not but that since I stopped logging in I very luckily avoided being banned anyway. The reason? for having taken actions against a specific player IC for IC reasons (He went on a fucking shooting spree and held a doctor hostage, I wasn't about to let him get away with it and when he shot me (a bridge officer) I asked the CO and we decided lethal force was authorized if required.) as he's apparently friends with one of the other admins and bitched about it, with my IC character conduct as the justification for the ban. That's not really much better news but at least I can say I am partially right about the situation, I apologize for jumping to conclusions. For the sake of not starting drama I'd like to keep this as the end of it and not mention names since I really don't care anymore now that I've found the answers I needed.
So basically: CM is shit.
I'm on the development staff of CM. We're trying out a lot of new people right now because we're absolutely swamped with players. We're honestly trying our best, but it can be very hard to manage a station full of armed players from causing issues.
About the Ushanka, I feel as if you are taking it a little too personally. We're not trying to stop you from playing a Russian character, but we're just trying to trim down on the unnecessaries. We want CM to feel like its set in the Aliens universe, so it's only natural we're going to clean up some content that may not fit with the overall feel we're hoping to accomplish.

what is wrong with russians in the alien universe exactly though?
They fit perfectly fine, russia is still around.
yeah like cm is pretty much never gonna feel like a srs aliens thing. while the whole ushanka thing may be a bit of an over-reaction, taking away fun shit people use to make individual characters is no bueno and takes away from what makes SS13 fun, the fact that somehow a crazy russian demoman, a slime person, a fat janitor, and about 30 greytide came together to beat whatever threat came to them

You don't need a ushanka to roleplay as a Russian. I've seen plenty of other players do it perfectly fine. It was never meant to be there in the first place.
Secondly, the marines in CM are the USCM, or "The United States Colonial Marines". Russia does exist in the Alien universe, but all references indicate they're a rival USSR-style superpower at odds with the USCM.

so basically no fun aloowed so you can have your RP in a way that doesn't make sense? People defected from russia in the cold war, why would it be unlikely they would now? Also what purpose does removing the ushanka really serve? If you say that it's unecessary remove every hat and anything that isn't a command uniform or a marine uniform, you don't need em.
Seems like every other server has become shit, is hippie still good
Seems like every other server has become shit, is hippie still good
yeah sure if you like being griefed and having the admins do literally nothing about it because they never do anything constructive from what i've heard and seen

We're simply looking to make the Colonial Marines resemble a military group as close as possible. This means that we want the players to look and dress like soldiers. We're trying to drift more towards a medium-RP server, and this means that we're working to make sure everything makes sense.
Like I said before, it's completely fine to RP a Russian, even a defector. However, defectors rarely ever keep their original uniform. The French foreign legion takes soldiers from all around the world into its ranks, but it makes them all wear the same uniform.
Its also a spessman game

that doesn't answer my question, did you remove every other item besides soldier and command uniforms?
that doesn't answer my question, did you remove every other item besides soldier and command uniforms?
We're trying to make CM as clean as possible. A lot of those items were never meant to be in there in the first place.
We never meant anything personal by removing them. However, I will say that we are working hard to give the server a distinct feel. It's very important to us that CM represents the Aliens universe and less so the base game.
I'm sorry if that's the best answer I can provide. We're honestly trying our best to provide a good experience.
If you want to go for Aliens Lore there are two known nations in the Aliens universe as far as we can tell, the 'United America's' which is a sort of unification of the entire North and South American continent under one nation (And the origin of the USMC) and some nation called the 'Three World Empire' that consists of a random bunch of nations from Japan to the United Kingdom. Its also where Weyland-Yutani come from originally.
Admins for CM seem to be hit and miss imo, some are great but other's can be overzealous. Either way the actual game itself is fun and enjoyable.
Thanks for the reply Boba. That's all the answers to every question now and it means a lot you guys on the dev team actually care. Maybe I did jump to conclusions and get a little melodramatic yet in the end I was still partially right. It's not about the hat really, but it was the flash point. It could have been anything that set me off like that, the problem was bigger than what set me off. You guys need way more quality control over the new mods because I'm skirting carefully around not being outright abuse banned, a player shouldn't feel intimidated by the server staff like that. I shouldn't have to carefully consider solving IC problems IC because the offender could be butt buddies with a mod. That aside I don't disagree with making the game more clean, however there are probably better ways to go about it than removing a few cosmetic items that actually fit alright into the universe. Especially considering there's a clown in the pool and the character setup page mentions nanotrasen. That and this is a byond ss13 game, there are way better games that do marines vs aliens suprah serious kombats than can be achieved on ss13. What makes ss13 special is the ability to do more things, but not quite as well as each individual part. Things like have representation of WT on the Sulaco, survivors, etc. And actually if you want to be in universe, WT knows about the aliens and technically our mission should involve blowing up the atmospheric processor's reactor once we learn of the aliens.
What I will say also is that Swordhill did okay by me. Guy's fair enough and does his best though his execution and reading comprehension could be a tad more refined imo. I apologized to him after I had accidentally meta'd a bit when I was still uber new to the CM rules and autopiloted an alien role like I would on goon or another server. I had to clarify 3 times I had actually read the rules, I just had a stupid streak of subconscious choices. Plus he used alright discretion with ban length seeing as I literally had only played 3 roundd at that point anyway, one of which I spent reading the rules and wiki.
Also I should note that Russians do in fact exist in the Aliens universe.
The most prominent example I can think off of the top of my head are the 'Iron Bear' mercenary company WY hires during Aliens vs Predator 2 (The Game). Most of the Iron Bear members are Russian (or slavic at least).

You shouldn't ever feel intimidated by the staff. The rules on CM are pretty simple, and we make a point to only ban people who breach the rules.
If you ever feel like you've been wrongly banned, feel free to explain the situation on our forums. We hold our moderators to a strict standard, and if we find out one of them was banning for personal disputes or illegitimate reasons, we remove them (or give them a very firm warning at the very least) and undo the bans.
We're still a ways away from cleaning up the server- several instances of Nanotrasen remain and we're still cleaning things up to match.
I think I gave the wrong impression when I made it sound like CM was supposed to be a very serious medium-RP server. We're not, but we have a theme we're really hoping to deliver.
I'm glad the intention is to be on the up and up at least because there really is potential in the project, even if it is still on Byond.
So i've been off ss13 for a few good years. Is it true all good servers are gone?

i have literally never heard anything good about hippie in the past ~3 months. it's community is made up of the kind of people who say "kek" unironically.

Seemed like Hippie pretty consistently degraded in quality while trying to maintain quantity instead which is the opposite of what they should have been doing.
Quantity comes with quality, not the other way around.

Goon's pretty good. Some people can get by with Bay, last I played Bay it was super strict and shit with a lot of admin abuse but that was a very long time ago when it first started on the b12 forums. CM is a good concept and as soon as they get their staff problems sorted I believe it'll be pretty great.
i cant play goon, the systems are just no fun imho, bay/tg/whatever fork is so ingrained into my brain that i cant change
Yeah Goon has a lot of the old systems that aren't really too interesting anymore iirc. But as far as actual community goes, it's probably the best currently. Unless we started our own FP station.

Hi.
CM host here, I understand, there are some issues with one of my staff members?
If you'd be so kind as to explain (over a PM would work) I'd be MORE THAN HAPPY to take care of the problem.
Also, I'm not aware of the ushanka problem?
Was it removed, when we converted to the new map?
Edit:
I think, it might be related to changes we are making to the character setup system as we re-write and re-build it.
To be honest, Goon hasn't really sold me. Sure, the community knows how to hold itself together and it isn't exactly Something Awful the server anymore, but the Goon mentality still permeates the codebase and general community attitude.
Content is created in a way that ensures the only way to get the full enjoyment out of all of it is to already know every facet of it, or spend hours on the test server brute-forcing it out. Almost any amount of disrespect to the mods is treated with immediate punishment. People are allowed to get away with a lot of shit, so long as it is hilarious to the moderators. It's just not my kind of server.
This is all stuff I've gathered from the small amount of times I've been on the server, so my opinion is not quite educated. This is just something I had to get off my chest.
Confirmed, the issue with the specific CM admin in question is being investigated and resolved. If anything I owe not only a thanks to Apop and Boba, but an apology of the most sincere caliber. I'll eat my pride a bit and be up front with that.

To be fair goon has this odd sort of very lax ruleset yet a zero tolerance policy on breaking them.
They reason that anyone who breaks these rules is a probably troublemaker, drama queen or some other sort of person that they do not want playing on their server.
They also have the miscreant system which is like a psudo antag role where players are to cause a certain kind of trouble without breaking the rules or doing anything antag related. This could be anything like "Enforce as much obstructive beuracracy as possible" (I had that one once and set up a checkpoint outside arrivals... I nearly died but got an antag token for my efforts.)
The thing to remeber is goon is set up on the asumption that nobody will RP at all, so the game itself needs a reason for people to play as opposed to "Job simulator 20XX" hence all the secrets and deeper mechanics.
I myself had a bit of fun trying to figure out how to create an army of killer tomatoes, it took a bit of lateral thinking but I eventualy figured out the chem you needed to infuse into the seeds to get them to change... and there was much merriment to be had on the station that day... for me.
