Hmm, never knew that they were actually historical. As long as it works I'm fine
About the classes:
A little clarification
Marksman: The marksman isn't a sniper, think him more so as a sharpshooter in RnL or a marksman in RO2 with the Gewehr 41 scoped.
The scope will be very difficult to use, it'll only allow a small viewport with which to "pick off" enemies of importance. The pistol is there as a just in case option - as "high importance" troops were often granted a side arm.
The bomber, upon reading a lot of WW1 memoirs, bombers were often the strongest men from the battalion, issued with a good few grenades (and sometimes a pistol). The job of this class will be to clear enemy trenches - providing support for the infantry... but the two classes go hand in hand with each other. Bomber helps inf, inf helps bomber...
The machine gun crew member, again is based on historical accounts. The last British veteran Harry Patch was part of a lewis gun team, he recalled often how vital the team was behind the gunner. The team had someone who could repair the lewis gun, someone who could help with reloading and several members who could carry extra ammunition and help guard the gunner. The machine-gun crew member will kind of be tasked with protecting and both assisting the gunner.
Of course, each class isn't final we'll be doing a lot of testing behind each.
how do you plan on doing that other than making a small viewport?
often times people will just "quickscope" if the viewport is like that, because by default source games make the center of the screen the center of the scope.
Also, about machine gun crew member, maybe allow him to lock himself into an "assisting" stance with the machine gunner, when the machine gunner reloads, it's faster because there's another person assisting.
However that would probably be hard to animate and code.
I agree a crewman is useful, in our games I usually stick with the machine gunner if I am a rifleman. The only problem is whats going to make the crewman stay with him besides 'realism'? The class needs to have some perks rather than just being given a shit ton of ammunition. I've played games on RO1 where we had similar classes for machine gunner but it was very rare for them to actually stay with the said gunner and just went rambo. Maybe some sort of bonus damage for staying near the gunner maybe? Not really sure.
In other news I am wondering if I can replace your current WW1 playermodels with my own that I have had help porting over and rigging:

I plan to get their helmets shrunk a little bit and then do the Germans. I was just wondering if its cool for me to have these replacements because I really dislike the current models, I plan to stop using them when 2.0 comes out seeing the British soldier looks like a fantastic model.

What I think what will encourage teams in this game would be bonuses, crewmen and gunner would give each other a benefit for example - machine gunner would be able to reload faster while the crewman bets quicker aiming or faster reloading himself? People that run off and rambo should take serious negatives like huge loss of moral and weaker aim/slower reload times.
Whoa those models look really nice. Are you going to leave a link to them once they're ready for WW1:Source?
If the devs would give me permission to have them as temporary replacements until 2.0 is released (because the new guys look way more cooler) then I'd be happy to get them rigged up to the mods animations. They're just for personal use right now.
Almost finished the Brits and then going to work on the Germans. I had some scottish done as well:

They look a bit...flat.
The bodies you mean? A lot of the design is just textured on. They are models from Necrovision with citizen and hand headhacks.

Yeah, that's what I mean. The details are all textured on rather than modeled, which while fine for things like the leg wraps and the shoes, looks atrocious for the pockets, the shoulders, and the collar.
They're for gameplay purpose only, you won't really notice much difference when playing.

It's not an unreasonable criticism, even DoD: S had greater model detail.

The only real difference between them are the raised straps. I CAN touch them up a little but the actual models are from a different game, I haven't touched them other than head hacking and hand hacking.
[editline]28th January 2012[/editline]
I might try lower the shoulders down a little.

Well the raised straps, the collar, and there aren't epaulets and straps being stretched over the shoulder.

agree, ish
maybe 3d target spotting it that isn't totally OP
They could make a squad like function like in RnL. Stay with your squad, get a morale bonus, some buffs. Or put specializations: maybe not equipment like I said earlier but passive things e.g. bandolier (carry more grenades and crap) crew gunner (gives you more accuracy next to machine gunners, you give them faster firing and loading times) etc.
I don't think it should give you more things like grenades but maybe better accuracy to represent confidence with a team with better sprinting and faster reloading compared to those who rambo.

Masks are almost done.
Lookin' good. How's the progress on the Germans?
The hun and tommy are nearly done:

Finding the skin groups for the germans are hard, I have only find this muddy 'dead' skin for corpse models thus far but I'll find the others soon enough. Gas mask on the Brit need to be re positioned (or I might just remove the straps).
Have to add, devs are a total bro.

they are really friendly
Apparently an announcement might be coming later.
cool
might as well post this:

man I told everyone about that fucker in the tree but no one did shit and they all got annihilated
I was the officer calling in artillery and making smoke screens.
[editline]18th February 2012[/editline]
btw the mod should seriously consider smoke grenades, they DID have them in WW1.
I think the mod should also have a early war and late war game mode, late war could field much more custom weapons while early war uses current stuff we have now.

And I really hope they fixed the problem with the hands in 3rd person. That and more detailed maps would be greatly appreciated.
