It is the same WSJ source from yesterday. I will wait until Nintendo confirms before worrying about it.
i'll be disappointed if there's a 3DS successor. I'd rather they focus all of their efforts on a single platform
I think what Nintendo is doing is that if it ever becomes clear right from its launch that the Switch is failing (and failing hard), they plan on just simply falling back to their previous line of systems (this case the 3DS and perhaps the Wii U though I doubt that). I believe the same thing was done with the original DS, where they planned on falling back to the GBA if the DS turned out to be a failure.
Also, regarding the new Mario game that was in the Switch trailer, the one thing I'm hoping that they keep from 3D Land and 3D World is how those games handled power ups. I've said this before and I'll say this agian, but the one thing I've never really liked about the 3D Mario games is that, with the exception of F.L.U.D.D. in Sunshine and Cloud Mario in Galaxy 2, most power ups in the 3D games were INCREDIBLY situational (64 and Galaxy being the worst offenders), with the player required to use them in order to complete certain levels, which completely goes against how they were in the 2D games. Power ups should never be something situational, but instead an extension of Mario's abilities. This is why I was so glad that when 3D Land and 3D World came out they brought back how the power ups were in the 2D games which were, again, an extension of Mario's abilities. That's how it was before, how it is now (thanks again to 3D Land and 3D World), and it's how it should always be.

Y'see, something about the Joy-Cons still bugs me. I agree at this point that asymmetry is probably needed to keep ABXY going right-to-left and so that we can turn the rails into shoulders for 2P mode, but the whole design still feels very inelegant.
I think it would work better if they tried to make the two Joy-Cons more rotationally symmetrical at least. Move the controls downward some - the bottom row moreso - and place -/+ in the horizontal center.

Barring Home/Power and the "main" triggers (the latter of which is likely disabled in 2P mode) this would make the two much more similar. You'd have the sticks and diamonds in the same spots and -/+ would be centered in 2P mode, too.

The Wii U’s GamePad served as both a controller and a functioning game screen. Owners could use the GamePad’s screen for secondary information, different views or even to play the game without using the television.
That won’t be the case with the Switch, which features a removable tablet-like device that allows owners to play games on the go.
“Nintendo Switch is dedicated to deliver a single-screen experience, on whatever screen you might choose,” Nintendo officials told Polygon when asked if the popular Wii U feature would be included in the Switch.
I wonder if taking the console from the dock makes the TV act as if someone yanked the HDMI out or if the dock does something
I bet this would be a great answer to when, say, the power goes out and you're at a critical point in a game. Power goes out but then the Switch goes into tablet mode, etc.
so if the switch doesn't have a second screen option, i wonder if you'll still be able to launch yourself to other players when you respawn in splatoon
i guess this also rules out the possibility of a mario maker port?
edit: on second thought mario maker could still happen, but the lack of a stylus would be inconvenient

Most likely they'll have a button you press to pull up the map and then you press a face button assigned to each team mate, and then one more to jump back to the spawn point
Looks the Switch won't be backwards compatible with the Wii U or the 3DS.
"clearly specifies that you will not be able to use Wii U game discs and Nintendo 3DS cards"
We could still get downloadable games.

Question is, if such a thing were to happen how would they be able to modify each and every game to work on one screen and possibly without touch capabilities?
I don't really see the switch replacing the 3ds, I figure they will eventually come out with a 3ds successor
It won't replace the 3DS because it can't fit in your pocket.
There's been multiple times where I've gone clothes shopping with my gf and went "well fuck I guess I'll just sit here playing Out Run while she's trying shit on" and I know I wouldn't be carrying a switch around in a bag while I'm out.
Question is, if such a thing were to happen how would they be able to modify each and every game to work on one screen and possibly without touch capabilities?
each and every game? i can only think of a few wii u games where the second screen is 100% essential
donkey kong country tropical freeze is one of the best games on the wii u and it doesn't even have a second screen. it just shows a black screen on the gamepad.

Why would it be each and every game? There's plenty of NES and SNES games that aren't on VC

With a game like 3D World the touch screen is not necessary to use, but you can't access all of the games content without it, making the game unable to be completed unless they change all the levels that require it.
If the gamepad is used at all and necessary for even a fraction of a game's content, then I don't see that particular Wii U game making the jump to the Switch. 3DS Games seem to be entirely out of the question here.
This is all under the assumption that the Switch doesn't have touch or voice capabilities.
apparently (no source, sorry) battery life is 3 hours
ehh not great but honestly i was expecting worse, that's about as much as my laptop really
edit: 3DS XL is apparently 3.5 hours, so i guess thats acceptable

So.. no Wii U games at all? I mean, not even purchasable download only titles? If it doesn't have this, MANY people could get turned off by it, because they were holding back on the Wii U.
This would be such a missed opportunity.

We don't know if there will be downloadable Wii U games or not, all it is saying is that Physical Backwards Compatibility is a No Go.
I almost forgot. I'm really pumped to see what Retro Studios have in store. Their game has been in development since 2013 and it was pretty much confirmed to move on to the Switch (NX)
with that much (presumed) dev time i'd imagine it's either another metroid or something out of left field like a new IP

Had me thinking, what if they did the DVD logo thingy but with the Nintendo logo instead

They already declined Metroid I think. But they did say it's Sci Fi

Battery pack confirmed?
What in those pictures would indicate a battery pack ? I guess the right one looks thinner, but it's just the angle. The base also looks CGI.

This is kind of out of nowhere, but I gotta say that I'm really glad we merged the 3DS and Wii U threads into one. It's been a lot easier to keep up with everything. Also it's a good reflection of what's happening with the Switch!
So yeah, good work everyone!

Unfortunately I doubt it's a new Metroid title, although i'd like to be wrong.

It's almost like someone saw the future or something.
Ive asked a few people if theres any reason to get a 3ds over a 2d when im only gonna play a couple strategy games and maybe pokemon sun/moon if i get it, so i'll ask anyone here if theres any big warnings/reasons to NOT getting a 2ds instead of just getting the 3ds?
I barely ever use the 3D on mine - the biggest reason for choosing a 3DS over a 2DS is you're more likely to fit the former in a pocket. Also it's worth noting that only 3DS has the 'New' variety, which has notable performance boosts, including in the demo for Sun & Moon. Other than that, 2DS is fine.
Something my girlfriend pointed out- There's been a MH game announced in development with no platforms specified, supposedly coming out around March. I would not be surprised if this was a NS game, and I cannot be more hype. On top of that, another friend of mine pointed out that "Nintendo Partners" are those with Nintendo games in development, and thus that list of companies just got a lot more exciting (better than having random developers say how good the console is, despite not having games in development for it. God dang it, Wii U, you had me that year). Overall, I'm very excited for what the NS will bring in games, even if its just one per company.
(Sidenote- I've been calling The Switch the "NS", because I'm so used to calling it the "NX." Damn you, muscle memory)

Make me wonder if the really weird frame rate of Breath of the Wild shown when the dude's outside was either Wii U footage or a rendering glitch from the added footage layer.
