oh nevermind, he said 'If'
The two NX rumors that I hope are true are NX using cartridges and NX having a separate portable mode
The idea of a console/handheld hybrid intrigues me and it'd be amazing if it's pulled off really well, and cartridges because the feeling of clicking a cartridge in is pure sex

no console is ever going to use cartridges again. flash memory, maybe, but never carts.
I hope it's a fun gimmick like the wii u and not a bad gimmick like the wii.

You know I meant, goddamn someone has to go all "well actually" everytime
I'll call them carts. I still call the 3ds carts "carts" and i'm sure they aren't actually by definition carts

to be fair that bad gimmick made it one of the best selling consoles ever. and it was a solid console despite that gimmick, had a lot of great games on it.
i dont really care if they go with any gimmicks, as long as the gimmicks are fucking optional. there's no reason for me to not be able to use the gamecube controller for various wii u games
toe controllers would be cool
So far, I feel like the Gamepad will not be the primary controller of the NX.
I can see a Pro Controller like device. Or just the Pro Controller really. Especially since they kept mentioning how Breath of the Wild had an option for it, guessing they will be back to some good old controllers.

You say "bad gimmick" but it's what made the Wii [I]extremely[/I] accessible and successful. You hand the controller to someone, they move their arm around, see how it reacts on screen, and you've successfully taught someone how to play a Wii game.
Well I call it a bad gimmick but I do exaggerate, when I say bad I mostly think of skyward sword's application. Warioware smooth moves was pretty cool.

I haven't been following rumors; is there any information suggesting Wii U controllers will be compatible with the NX?
It was really nice not having to buy new Wiimotes for the U. Even if i've already gotten my money's worth and then some out of using my Wii U Pro Controller for my PC, i hope to be able to use it for the NX. Such a good goddamn pad.
TBH not many games outside of Nintendoland mini games and Splatoon integrated the gamepad into gameplay well. Most just used it as a map or inventory screen or a way to play games with the monitor off. The latter of which I did enjoy, though, seeing how I beat Earthbound from the comfort of my bed.
playing virtual console games in bed with the gamepad is one of my favorite things about the wii u

By cartridges I think it's most likely going to be something like an SD card.

[del]Could be flash memory inside of a cartridge.[/del]
Let me reword that, flash memory, inside of a plastic shell like the old cartridges.
I'd imagine cartridges are more expensive than discs to manufacture, since it's a whole plastic case with a microchip in it compared to just a disc with data on. Plus, if the abundance of piracy on the DS series might also mean it's hard to protect against faulty copies and R4-like units.
If anyone can correct me on this though please do, I'm just making assumptions about reasons why Nintendo wouldn't do back to cartridges.
No, you aren't wrong. The equivalent of a 3DS flash cart is like $4 whereas a DVD is about 20 cents.
That's nowhere near as big of a deal as when N64 carts costed about $30 to make each, but a difference of 3.8 dollars is still a loss of 3.8 million potential dollars for a million-selling game if assumed to be at the same price for a flash cart and a dvd.
Flash carts would be commercial suicide if DVDs are not a usable alternative for 3rd parties.

so
like all flash memory?
Also, blurays takes seconds to make. We at Sony can pump out 1.5 million disks in 24 hours. Now we still do make Vita games but we get the parts from other places and we put it together.

Well yes obviously, but when most people think flash memory they think this.

What I'm imagining in my head for a modern cartridge is more like an SSD and it could slide in like the old NES carts.

but like
sd cards exist
[editline]28th June 2016[/editline]
you're literally just describing an sd card, but bigger for no reason
people think the nx is going to have cartridges OR discs
if it's going to be a successor for 3DS and Wii U, it's going to have both.
It's gonna use LaserDisc and Betamax.
punchcards

Because if it's a home console, why would you want a game that can be lost easily?
It makes sense to have SD card sized games for portable devices, because you're constrained by the size of the console itself and weight.

Besides, the 3DS and Vita don't use SD cards for their games. They use a propriety storage medium to avoid easy copying.
Nintendo's gonna get a license from Sony to bring back UMDs. Don't throw out your UMD movies just yet!
Don't be ridiculous, the NX will use cassette tapes.
And later, they will release an addon that uses 3.5" floppy disks.
flashcards/SD cards are able to hold more data than Blurays nowadays, and have much faster read/write times.
Depending on if nintendo is willing to take a loss at first, it could end up being a better idea to go with cards rather than discs.
EDIT: A Class 10 64GB SD Card costs market value of ~$20, so it takes less than that to manufacture them, and has a read speed of 80MB/s (a USB drive could go to around 100MB/s)
a 50GB Bluray has a maximum read speed of 30-36MB/s, usually less, PS4 reads at 27MB/s
Vhs tapes can hold terabytes of data so I'm down with those
if they went the cartridge route, it IS a console, so I would imagine that any carts would be more akin to an N64 than a Vita or 3DS
.. which would be a bit of a money sink since discs are much more cost-efficient to produce nowadays
