If it goes all the way to a Mini Gamecube, imagine all the people buying it for Melee :v:
Also if the SNES Mini happens, I hope the Europe version runs the same as the US version because I want the sexier console, since the US SNES looked like garbage compared to the EU/JAP one
Too bad for the Melee players it might be patched up, mainly moveset tweaking (especially on the space animals) to give the less powerful characters a chance. Why the hell not? Brawl Plus and Brawl Minus did the same, and this is a multiplayer game.
"Fox only" no more, Fucks no one. If haters come to be because of it they have only themselves to blame.
Ben you say some of the most random things sometimes.
Also they won't do a SNES-Gamecube one. 60 for 30 NES games, if they did 30 SNES games you can bet they'd charge way more.
30 Gamecube games? Can you imagine the price?

Why would they touch it? Melee fans would be furious. Not to mention I remember some story Sakurai told that all the materials for Melee weren't properly backed up so even if they decided to go back it would probably be impossible.

What makes you think they'd honor 30 games for each system?

The most recent top 8 at a major Melee tournament had 8 different characters played.

Nintendo doesn't change games unless it's for health and safety reasons (like the seizure-inducing flashes when dying in Zelda 2). If this theoretical Gamecube Mini happened with Melee, they'd probably put the 1.02 USA version or the PAL one.

I could see, say, a 15-game SNES one maybe, but N64 and GCN, no way

Fox, Falco, Sheik and Marth would still be the meta.
Unless they have save states the use of these retro consoles is gonna be limited.

Then fuck those Melee fans, it's their own fault if they get angry over a v1.3 for both regions. It'll be funny when Americans feel butthurt over weaker up smashes for the fox and Sheik, including the latter's inability to chain throw!... Oh, and Game & Watch's aerials no longer being mistaken as special moves.

They do.

Do you even play competitive Melee? You sound like you don't know a thing.

I never have, I haven't even read or heard about such events in Sweden. I don't think I'll ever get to do that either.
Time and a place, Ben. And take it from me: I gave up on that fight a decade ago. They still wanna pretend Melee is actually balanced at this point, let them.
Melee comps are kind of like birds. Keep giving them attention and they'll just make another self-aggrandizing and not-entirely-accurate documentary. Or something.
I never have, I haven't even read or heard about such events in Sweden. I don't think I'll ever get to do that either. Still v1.3
There is no reason to have it a 1.3. People have been learning this game for 15+ years and there is no reason to change it. You can't name a reason that doesn't come from irrational and flat out childish contempt for Melee players.

Nobody thinks Melee is balanced. If that were the case you'd still have people desperately trying with lower tier characters on the roster, but you don't. It's been 15+ years. The game doesn't have to be balanced for people to enjoy it.
What is wrong with the Melee documentary? It's a detailed history of the Smash scene.
ben despises melee and anyone who comps it. it's quite clear in the smash thread. almost funny

eh, i'd rather just make an emulator out of a raspberry pi. Much more potential for games, would cost pretty much the same, maybe a bit more (but it has more), and it could probably be fully put together in a week, maybe two depending on shipping speed. Its still a nice little thing, but if you're after more games, the Pi is the better option.

I don't think this is for the same market as someone actually going for emulation like that- it's a simple, easy to find box to get for christmas for people blinded by nostalgia or want their kids to have a "real console."

Buy it for the case, gut the case, and stick a Pi in.

Just seems like it would be kind of pointless otherwise. Go through the effort to create and manufacture new "consoles" just to only have 10 games (even that) on it? Ehh.

You do realize "in the good ol days" we didn't have save states right :v?

No doubt, Ben Drowned hates Melee and its competitive fanbase. On the other hand, he could find some entertainment in Smash 64 competitions!
Why would they touch it? Melee fans would be furious. Not to mention I remember some story Sakurai told that all the materials for Melee weren't properly backed up so even if they decided to go back it would probably be impossible.
Funny thing, but it's actually fairly likely that if Melee was re-released, it wouldn't be the NTSC 1.02 version, but instead be based on the PAL version (which had some moderate balance changes and a significantly buffed Yoshi).
As NTSC 1.02 is the norm for comp, they thus would likely shy away from the VC version, even if they had GC games running at 1080p and thus had a literal Melee HD on their hands, despite the fact that Melee tournaments are mostly ok with 1.00 and 1.01 since those don't touch the top tier. The PAL meta is way more interesting imo even though it's still not balanced so even if we only got the PAL changes, that'd be at least a step in the right direction.
There is no reason to have it a 1.3. People have been learning this game for 15+ years and there is no reason to change it. You can't name a reason that doesn't come from irrational and flat out childish contempt for Melee players.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix was played at EVO in 2009 and 2010 despite being an update to an 18-year-old game (14-year-old if you consider it a patch for Super Street Fighter II Turbo only and not a patch to Street Fighter II: The World Warrior). If anything, it would be childish for Meleers to not accept it (especially if it got a name like Melee Remix to differentiate itself) unless Nintendo did something mindblowingly toxic like forgetting to remove wobbling and having the two best characters be Ice Climbers and Jigglypuff.
Nobody thinks Melee is balanced.
Not to defend Ben in this argument, but oh, you'd be surprised, there are people that I've talked to that think Fox shouldn't have been nerfed at all in PM and think phantom hits, Falcon being unable to grab the ledge with side B and ledge rolling occupying the ledge without the animation suggesting such are good design. Granted, there are people that think Smash 4 is balanced too even though the only four fighting games that make it look balanced are Melee, Brawl, MvC2 and MvC3. :v:
You're not ever getting a Melee HD. They lost the source code. If a GameCube mini happened (10 years away honestly) you'd get NTSC 1.02, as that is the most used version for the original console.
What is wrong with the Melee documentary? It's a detailed history of the Smash scene.
"Detailed history" my ass. The Melee documentary fudged a lot of details to paint the game's comp scene as more noble and grassroots than it actually was, and pissed all over Brawl and its players when Brawl's scene actually contributed a lot to help the Melee scene grow.
There were segments like a big Melee tournament match being shown side-by-side against a Brawl match literally being played by Lv1 CPUs to demonstrate how "inferior" Brawl's gameplay was, and it portrayed Melee's large rise in popularity in recent years as some sort of "rise from the ashes through nothing but our own conviction," omitting the fact that the Melee and Brawl scenes were just about even for the longest time and comp Melee only started getting truly big when Brawl scene players pitched in to help get Melee into a big charity event when it was clear there wasn't gonna be enough room there for two Smash games. I remember Hungrybox in particular saying something about, "Melee was on its deathbed, but we found a cure. Then Nintendo and Brawl tried to snatch it away, saying, 'No cure for you! No one can know about this!'" when that's not what happened at all.
Back before that documentary came out, fan reception between both games was way different, with Brawl having the edge. Now you have a lot more gamers who haven't even played Smash preaching about how competitively excellent a fighting game Melee is and how trash Brawl is even as just a mere video game. Because a couple "authorities on Smash" said it was that way in some "inspirational documentary". That whole thing was a damn propaganda piece by a pack of ungrateful and egotistical pricks, made as some sort of chess move to win the "war". To hell with those backstabbers.
That's what they are. I've struggled for years to find a word to adequately describe my hatred for comp Melee, but I think I just found it: goddamn backstabbers. They stepped on us for their own careers and glory, and to this day Brawl as a game now remains an industry-wide punching bag to keep them looking good. I hope Melee's scene eventually finds its way to its deathbed for real, because they @#$!ing deserve it. They can be buried next to the shallow grave they threw Brawl into.
Comps never cared about Nintendo, or the history behind it that Smash represents. They turned that digital museum into their own damn gladiator arena, and when the museum builders tried to make the museum part better than ever, they were gutted for it because it interfered with those jackasses' means to get money and attention. To hell with all of them.
Looks like this is the lucky guy with the 64DD.

Metal Jesus Rocks is a pretty cool guy, kinda surprised but also not surprised it was him to get his hands on it. All of his videos are about showing off his collection.
