Is it licensing issues? I thought it was trouble with the original documentation or something.
Nope, licensing.
The company that made it went defunct in 2004.
Hey, thanks for the quick answer. So, no GBA Castlevania games on the 3DS and the DS ones only if I have the cartridge? Too bad :(
You could always emulate the games via homebrew, though that would also require you to have the cartridges and GBA for legality purposes. As far as getting them to work though it's super simple nowadays, just drop some shit on your SD card and browse to the right page, then install menuhax for easy access on startup.
You can emulate the GBA on a o3DS as well.
You can even emulate the SNES which is "not possible" on the o3DS.
Can confirm this, it's how I play Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, and Mortal Kombat, since Nintendo decided to be a pain in my ass.

Who owns the rights now? You'd think Nintendo would want to get them back. Even if only a few games used it, it was tech for one of their systems and some of those games were major installments in first-party franchises.
Hell, we could finally see a release for Star Fox 2 if that ever happened. Just like "EARTH BOUND", the game was already complete, they just never released it back then. And we finally got EarthBound Beginnings through VC, didn't we?
[sp]Still waiting for EarthBound Future, Nintendo.[/sp]

I can't find any information about who owns the rights now, but I would assume someone from Argonaut Games.

Yes, but not accurately. There is a homebrew SNES emulator for original 3DS, but it's not even anywhere near close to being cycle-accurate with the original SNES processor. In fact, IIRC, it uses a genius hacky method where it actually draws sprites and backgrounds as flat 3D objects on a 3D plane. Because otherwise it wouldn't reach playable speeds trying to properly mimic SNES rendering.
Accuracy and being bug-free is more important for a paid product than simply being playable. I sure as hell wouldn't pay for VC games if they weren't properly emulated and tested. Nintendo has cited on numerous occasions that the top reason their VC release schedule is so slow is because they have to test the shit out of every game to make sure it works properly and doesn't bug out somewhere due to being emulated.
Tbh I haven't noticed it so I don't really care too much, I'm not buying a n3DS just to play cycle-accurate SNES games

However Nintendo does. That's the point he's trying to make. Its better to have the games not available than releasing a possibly flawed product because there happens to be a game breaking bug from using an emu with tons of speed hacks. With homebrew, whatever, its experimental so you can't complain. If it works, that's awesome too.
There's no GBA games on the 3DS at all, even on the eShop. The system hardware simply can't run them. The only exception is if you have the Ambassador 3DS which can run the 3 GBA games it was released with, though they're played through a different method than emulation.
The 3DS does not emulate GBA. rather, there are actually three firmware systems running on hardware. The 3DS one, which we deal with, the DSi one, which can only be configured through 3DS Settings and rears its ugly head in WiFi settings, and the GBA firmware. You know, the one that did nothing but show "GAME BOY" on it.

It is referenced in the hardware as AGB_FIRM

It's also why you used to have to patch AGB_FIRM to play any Gameboy game.
Remember Nintendo Directs?
Remember Nintendo Directs?
It's around this time of the year, right?
Like mid-September or something.
Also, we should be getting the next Hyrule Warriors pack soon. The Phantom/Tracks one.
I miss the days of expecting a Nintendo Direct every other month.

It's fucking nothing, not sure why a video was needed to announce this

Either it's the lighting or Reggie is looking really, really old here.
I see Nintendo's exciting new stratagem of saying fucking nothing continues to pay off.

I know how inconsequential that video is, but I just like hearing Reggie talk. Still though, I dig that look.
And relax guys, we know NX is getting revealed this month.

"New Nintendo 3DS XL system" comes out like:
"New Nintendo 3DS-S-S-S-S"
Nice timing! Especially after they've just released the $149,99 Mario 3D Land bundle.
Back into the gauntlet, ye bastards!

Just move it up by ~6 hours and let the Europeans stay up past their bedtime a little
Oh boy, I can't wait to hear about Yokai Watch 2, Spirit of Justice and Mario Party.
If we're lucky we might even get some pokemon
Nintendo come the hell on
I'd throw in some MH and the amiibo update for New Leaf.
I'd throw in some MH and the amiibo update for New Leaf.
Add Hyrule Warriors DLC pack for this season.
Maybe some indie games.

They'll most likely mention dragon quest and ever oasis as well, but yeah I don't expect anything interesting for this direct.
Somebody gonna make a bingo card for this direct?
I'm placing my bets on this game:
- Hyrule Warriors Legends DLCs
- Monster Hunter Generations DLCs
- Animal Crossing: New Leaf's amiibo support
- Azure Strike Gunvolt 2
- Mario Party: Star Rush
- Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice
- Pokemon Sun & Moon
- Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure
- Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice
- Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse
- Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
- Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
- River City: Tokyo Rumble
- Yokai Watch 2
- Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadne's Conspiracy
- Unexpected first party game?
I really want a surprise announcement of GBA virtual console games for new 3ds
