did an invasion in ds3 and things got weird

I dunno in Bloodborne I kindof feel like significantly more of a badass than in Dark Souls. Bloodborne is very scary until you realize that the scariest motherfucker in the world is you.
Rallying is ingrained into my playstyle now though and when I try to go back to Souls I feel an extreme urgency to attack once I take a hit.

Also add a loyce shield and use the butcher knife for more health regen.

If you sit down at a bonfire and go human using humanity, you can kindle any bonfire using a humanity and you can get 10 flasks. If you still feel you need more you can get up to 20 if you go down to the catacombs by the skeletons in Firelink Shrine and beat a pretty easy boss.

There's your problem. Threaded cane is definitely not something I'd recommend a first-timer to use. Damage output is low, especially in its tricked form.
Do you have access to anything else?

As a starting weapon it's pretty bad compared to others, useful for hitting boss hitboxes and stuff though. I would highly recommend you switch.

Saw spear is amazing. And really early game.
There's not a lot of good skill weapons until midgame+ so your best bet is to just go with whatever you like for now that's decently scaled.
Threaded cane gets a lot of shit, but I used it through my whole first playthrough and had no trouble. You can stun lock most enemies with it in cane form, and whip form deals a lot of damage to certain enemy types in a big area. Just gotta know when to switch.

Is even worse. It is fun for messing around with but if you're having trouble with the cane then using the driver could probably be the worst move you could do.

The spear will do you good if you're going skill. Don't bother with the spear, it's horrible, and the axe and cleaver are good but if you're not strength, then it's not worth it.

25 skill 25 strength is a good point for using a lot of different weapons, especially as quality builds are very potent in BB. Go for it.

By "spear is horrible" and "spear will do you good", I mean the saw spear is good (better than the cleaver) and the rifle spear is horrible.

I'm so glad I managed to get this one before Dark Souls III's launch.
147 hours, but completely worth it in the end.
You could either quality, skill & bloodtinge or skill & arcane right now. Personally I would recommend the quality or bloodtinge as it allows for some fun builds.
Alright, I will try saw spear and start dropping points into strength.

I have done all the Dark Souls 1 achievements and I was working on the last two achievements in Dark Souls 2 (all miracles and all pyromancies) but lost my saves. I'd like to go back and grab them but getting to NG+2 is too much work.

Threaded cane is such a great weapon if you're already good at the game but I wouldn't recommend for a first time player.
It can handle anything since the cane form is great for fast battles against other hunters and the whip form is the best crowd control in the game and it has excellent range. The transformation attacks are quick and simple and going from whip to cane does a lot of damage per strike and the reverse has long range.
Its only downside is it doesn't do a ton of damage per hit like a strength weapon would and the whip attacks are not fast so they should not be used in close range. It's not the most damaging, but it is the most useful
