I wear light armor so I can do the max roll. When I tried during the fight though I would either a) get stunned by the dog then killed or b) survive for a split second only to then die by Capra's fast spin. Sorry for the ranting, but it just annoys me that people think this is a godly game and 10x better than Dark Souls 2.
Thing with DS2 is that you can become so overpowered to the point where you just bruteforce the game. DS1 actually relies on you being good, so the quality of the game is affected by how good you are. It's extremely frustrating when you die unlike DS2 where you have so many crutches it's a non-issue. I had the same thing happen to me in my first playthrough and I lashed out like you did, but I took the time, Haveled up and everything was relatively smooth. Just give it time, play safer, find new avenues and you'll find the game drastically improves when you do.
I kind of enjoy those gotcha moments, they are all avoidable and better than just being like, ok, this is a fog wall im going to spend my souls get prepared buy some items because i know a boss is here. Same reason some people might think Smough and Ornstein are cheap, they arent you just need to keep both bosses in your vision and not get greedy.
So I'm playing Dark Souls II for the first time (SOTFS on PC), currently at Shrine of Amana, are there any other fun Ultra Greatswords you guys would recommend besides the Greatsword? Everytime I try to go to a new weapon I find myself going back to the Greatsword because that one-handed R1 just feels so gooood. (On a side note, it's kind of tedious trying to look up the Greatsword in various search engines. In a game that has the weapon classes "Greatsword" and "Ultra Greatsword," it's really annoying how there's an Ultra Greatsword just called Greatsword.)
greatsword is a noob trap. that said, none of them are particularly fun except maybe the drakewing greatsword for that projectile attack imo

It was my favorite in DkSI, and carried me (mostly) through my DkSII playthrough. It's quick, powerful, and has, in my opinion, the best moveset of all the heavier weapons in the game. It has a sideways, group-slaying wide slash, a straight jab for corridors, and the jump attack is a lot quicker and more painful then it first appears.
greatsword is a noob trap.
What do you mean by noob trap? I get Dark Soul's Drake Sword being a noob trap because it has high base damage but 0 scaling, but I'm not sure what would be the case with II's Greatsword.
It's pretty much a Shoggoth
It's absolutely nothing like a Shoggoth. Shoggoths are formless blobs of material used by a prehistoric society as construction equipment, and enjoy twisting people's heads off while crudely mimicking what they say. The Brain of Mensis is a large human organ used by contemporary humans as a medium between them and the gods, and is physically incapable of hurting you if it's not looking down at you from above.
unless you have it maxed out, it's not that great in pvp and too slow for certain attacks to be useful at all.
Oh I have it at +10 already, but I'm not really into PvP. I do have a mace that I use as a backup weapon for when I'm invaded because otherwise people are really eager to fish for backstabs when I have my greatsword out.
Well, PVP aside. I always go with the Pursurer's Greatsword, despite the moveset many people don't like. It's solid and if you hit somebody with it, they'll be reeling. You can easily 2 shot light armoured people at +10 with 35 STR up, at least with counter damage involved.

I just really enjoy the slow calculated moveset. Sadly i think the "greatsword" is pretty much the best ultra greatsword i carry 3x +10 around for powerstancing them and making sure durability isnt a problem. You could try some of the 2h hammers they have a similar moveset and work really well against most bosses since they have armour.
The Pursurer 2HR2 has awesome tracking too. Full 360 coverage since both swings go in nearly 180 degree swings and you can turn around completely for the second one.

Greathammers are a painfully underused weapon-type and because of it many people aren't used to the damage. especially because of how blunt does great damage to heavy and light armor alike. Iron King hammer may not be the gyrm hammer, but it's still got a great moveset and the fire blast always keeps people on their toes.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll start off by giving Pursuer's a chance.
I've just been using the Drangleic sword and it's been working out pretty well for me. I've seen it said the claymore has a better moveset but I don't notice any difference in their moveset when I tried it. Throw in the Dragonrider Bow to occasionally pick off distant enemies or aggro individuals when need be and it's been working out nicely.
the claymore's 2-handed moves are far superior to drangleic sword's stupid diagonal swings. it's also longer
Looking back at Vaati's latest video, it appears that SPOILERS [sp]Aldrich, Saint of the Deep/Devourer of Gods is the first Lord of Cinder that we fight. Guess that kind of rules out the possibilities of him having a larger role.[/sp]
I see. Oh well, I rarely 2-hand the sword anyways.
A very, very basic rule for you to follow when you play Dark Souls: Accept that you will die. Accept that your deaths will be frequent and embarrassing. Even the best players, the most experienced veterans make fatal mistakes from time to time, dying to enemies that shouldn't have given them any trouble at all. Then every time you do, think about what went wrong, and what you can do to avoid the problem. Keep throwing yourself at every obstacle that defeats you, refining your techniques, honing your timing and your dodges to a razor's edge, and finally victory will be yours, and it'll taste sweet. Your strength and skill will be forged in the bonfire; through defeat after defeat your technique will be sharpened, your skill tempered, and you will go from a hapless victim of the horrors that beset you to the bane of all who face you. THAT is what makes the Souls series great. The lore ties into it, too. Those who lose hope, who give up, are the hollows that go mad. The Chosen undead is one who has unbreakable will, no matter how many times he or she faces death.
I'll always remember my worst death there was 10 humanity and over 400k souls in that shit

Just finished Demon's Souls. [t]http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/316747301006202889/1B41DDE9EDA5C5FCDFDB8B320AA43F01602E04BC/[/t] I'm a dirty sinner. :v: [editline]derp[/editline] Holy damn, I streamed for 6 hours straight.
that ending was brutal, holy crap

If I recall correctly, they stumbled upon it while exploring the Isz Labyrinth. Perhaps they got the most involved with the great ones via the healing church and Byrgenwerth, but they weren't the only civilization to have discovered the existence of the Great Ones and deal with the beast plague.[/sp]

Made a highlight of me fighting Old King Allant. http://www.twitch.tv/nidbutt/v/52462435 Got him on my first try, but man that soul level drain really fucked me up during the fight. :v:
