modularity will not replace variants. It's been stated that some ships will be more intentionally modular, others will be more variant-focused. The tali is a good example of basic modularity, it's one big hull but the cookie cut holes in the bottom can be fitted with standardized equipment. Alternatively, things like the mustang have ladders vs canopies, and an interior bed+exterior cargo vs an entire interior camper setup that really would be tied to the ship as a whole
so, I can attach different trailers to a hitch, remove modular seats from a van for transport space, but I can't just move around some parts to make a chevy malibu into a chevy el camino
As I said, I think the modularity system is changing how they look at variants. It won't outright replace them but I think CIG's seeing the corner they painted themselves into with the old decisions on variants and the new modularity system gives them an out.
Think of how easy it'd be to convert a Gamma into an Omega with an aftermarket upgrade to basically just swap the belly parts out - this kind of thing gets done in the real world all the time by car customizers. And I could see the Mustang Beta maybe having an option to swap out the cabin for, say, Avenger-style holding cells - everything to the rear of the airlock/Hobbins hole can be treated as one piece as long as the replacement parts fit within the same form factor.
However, I can't specifically remember where I sourced this, I could be digging out memories of random hopeful comments in Reddit threads and nothing official, so don't expect any big crazy announcements about this soon.
Edit: Survey updated with known variants. Because this is a "what have/will you pledge for" survey I've left off ships that are never for pledge like the F8 Lightning and the Xi'An Volper bomber (which isn't for pledge last it was asked on RtV). There are variants that've been discussed in vague terms that I haven't listed because they didn't appear in the ship status post James Pugh maintains; the exception is the Warlock Avenger variant that CIG let slip the name for ages back and isn't ready to talk about any more than they already have.
Please go back and add to your responses if you are not already at your pledge limit.
oh god damnit this is supposed to only allow one response from people and I was able to submit a second one entirely. Uhhhh fuck. What do I do? Start over? I could copy the questions and delete the originals, and then wipe the spreadsheet... Google Forms whyyyyy.
Maybe I wasn't restricted from entering my first response because when I first entered it I did not have it requiring everyone to only submit once; I went back again and it gave me the option to edit my response. So.. well, fuck, this invalidates things a bit, but not too much. It's still going to be inaccurate, though. Should I try copying the survey questions and erasing the originals to reset it? Sorry, guys, if this ends up making you re-do it, but I threw it together hastily.
Okay, duplicate and delete will work, it'll just make everyone re-enter their data.
Please speak now if you have strong reservations about not re-doing the survey. I will be resetting it in like one hour if I don't hear any objections, because the faster we get the right data the less impact this screw-up of mine has. Again, sorry for this.
[editline]18th August 2015[/editline]
[del]Damnit, I fucked it up and now it isn't even saving responses.[/del] Oh, there was just a delay for some reason. It's working now and responses have been cleared.
https://goo.gl/ppXezT
Everyone please fill it in again. I promise this won't happen again.
All I have is the mustang alpha, but I have my vote in.
Ugh, well, now the spreadsheet won't update with any new responses, but fuck it, that's less important than just collecting the data. I can live with that, and next time I'll do the form right the first time.
Thank you for your patience with me while I learn all the ways Google Forms can fuck up, guys.
Can anyone accept me into the org, I think jono is dead.
Not dead, just lazy.
[sp]jono I l u bby u kno that[/sp]
I hope the Constellation will have an option to load torpedoes in the cargo bay. If it does then FP could wreck even small groups of capital ships.
Maybe we can jettison the main engine nacelles and use them as torps
Unplayable because you can't put badgers on an otherwise-working SH? Forgive me but you might be just a little overdramatic over a long-standing bug.
You don't even have the problem I have, which is that if you remove the Mustang Beta's canard turret for any reason, it's gone from the holotable until you delete your XML. :v:
No, it's not a long-standing bug. There was a very simple fix in previous patches - You take all the weapons off your ship, close the holotable, start it up again, and reattach the weapons. Now even that's broken.
And as for me being overdramatic, YOU try going two months without a computer capable of running any game developed after the 1980s, waiting six hours for Star Citizen to update, and then finding that you can't even put weapons on your ship.
All I said, after all, was that I found the game unplayable.
All I can tell you is that I've struggled with the bug for months and closing and re-opening the holotable was not a reliable fix before or after 1.1.5.
I forgot about the friends list til I accidentally bumped the key, seems it's borked
[t]http://i.imgur.com/CZP7jnk.jpg[/t]
That happened with 1.1.5 I think, and it tells me that 1.1.5+ has advances towards a working MobiGlas implementation, but it's (clearly) not there yet.
Screw all you people with your fancy shmancy retalators and conways, I have an avenger loaded with 2 tons of freedom juice
the juice explodes on contact
All I have is a Ghost hornet but I want a multi crew ship.
All I can tell you is that I've struggled with the bug for months and closing and re-opening the holotable was not a reliable fix before or after 1.1.5.
Maybe 'long-standing' is relative. My computer went out of commission shortly after 1.1.4 dropped, and I hadn't played with it on that patch.
All I have is a Ghost hornet but I want a multi crew ship.
Why does the ship census not record a Hornet Ghost then? :^)

It defintely was happening early in the 1.1.x patch progression, although I don't know that it specifically hit at 1.1.0. However it's been like this for most of this year. I'll be so happy when the holotable gets chucked out. CIG acknowledges it's shit, they just don't have its replacement ready because it (probably) requires MobiGlas to be up and running.
P.S. it's a new page, a reminder that everyone has to fill out the census again (only the second time, I haven't fucked it up AGAIN since yesterday) if they did not re-submit after I revised the questions to include upcoming concept ships.
When are you guys next playing, anyway? I think I found a fix.

From what I remember, the bug was introduced in 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 when they finally fixed hardpoint mount sizes. You were still able to work around it by using the method I mentioned before, but apparently 1.1.5 and 1.1.6 broke that functionality.
Well, let's organize something!
Tomorrow (Thursday the 20th), at either 1pm Pacific (8pm UTC) or 4pm (11pm UTC). Rate tool for the 8pm UTC time slot, rate autistic for 11pm UTC. We'll go with whichever has more. If you can show up to either slot, rate zing and be prepared to show up at the more popular time.
If we have lots of interest for both, we'll go with whichever is more popular for Thursday and we can talk about arranging a session on Friday/the weekend in the other time slot so everyone's covered.
And Oceaniapunchers, start throwing out a UTC time that'll work for you if you want to organize something that's at a reasonable hour, too. Or just take the initiative and organize it yourselves, you don't need my permission lol.
As usual, we'll be using the prfn.se TS3, Spacepunchers room.
wholly unavailable tomorrow unfortunately
in the meantime, dinking about with weapon loadouts on the gladius, tarantula (s2)+2 fixed mass drivers (s2) is fun but not exactly the most efficient. Will attempt tarantula + 2 gimballed S2 neutrons
[del]Hey, if anyone's around to fly now, get into prfn.se Spacepunchers and we can run some shit up without having to wait until tomorrow. Or, if there's interest in say two hours from now (rate zing if then but not now), we can gather then. I just didn't want to rely on short-notice like this.[/del] Edit: Too short of notice, I guess, and that's okay. If anyone else wants to gather tonight, though, make some noise in the thread. Until then, as stated below, tomorrow, 8pm UTC.
I am still going to show up for what's really looking like a 1pm PDT/8pm UTC session tomorrow so people have enough notice, too.
I got my REC refunded from my Scythe rental before Scythes were made automatic to Imperators, so I can afford to bring a Glaive.
Vault updates include prep work for Citizencon:

This appears to be the final design for the CitizenCon 2015 trophy, along with alternate/rejected designs:

The actual theme of the Vault post is extra ArcCorp content (they're indirectly hyping the Area 18 release, so I'm hoping this is a sign of confidence, not desperate appeasement).

Crashing this plane...
Have they clarified how it is that we're going to damage ships with significant 3D space? Obviously just pelting the outside with the kinds of guns that 95% of the ships are equipped with can only hurt so much beyond the outer skin.
Armor piercing torpedoes? I doubt it. I have a feeling that larger ships to the Idris' scale will almost require boarding actions.
There's been confirmation that penetrating attacks will fuck up internal components.

Since we know there are hidden hp bars to some extent at least, it seems logical to guess that if you shoot a part of a large ship enough, you'll trigger some sort of "internal explosion" which detaches the part of whatever.
It's probably already happening seeing as internal components like heat sinks and whatnot can get damaged without actually losing that whole wing or whatever. It'd be the same mechanics, just on a bigger scale.
It was in an old 10FTC, but he addressed this exact same thing. A small fighter could probably damage or disable a capital ship, but they wouldn't be able to outright destroy it by eventually working through a huge HP pool. For that, you'd need a Retaliator which, in Chris' own words, could "crack open an Idris."

I'm hoping in the future for more complex status UI that tells you exactly what is broken and how it affects your performance.
An obviously-WIP version of that, with not much in way of explanation in the UI, was shown off in the Gamescom multicrew demo during the fight, and when they tried to fix the Tali in the first run after the Connie damaged it too much to finish the demo. I imagine the real thing will be much more nuanced.
