Correct me if I'm wrong but is the Aegis Avenger still the space A-10 or is it something else now?
Correct me if I'm wrong but is the Aegis Avenger still the space A-10 or is it something else now?
it never, ever, ever was
[editline]5th November 2015[/editline]
it's a cop car
Yeah, funny thing. People on the forums are trying to pretend the Hornet was supposed to be the space A-10 to justify the fact it can't fly worth a damn any more.

compared to other ships of its size/cost, it has a hella powerful unique gatling gun on the nose. It's a police cruiser, sure, but I'd say it's totally a mini A-10. Get some S1 laser repeaters gimballed on the wings (default config from the gladius) and you've got yourself a mean setup for cheap
we're still waiting on updates regarding the new variant/module kits, pretty hopeful we get the option to replace the cargo space with a massive weapon handling unit connected to a big ass railgun or whatever underneath
[t]http://i58.tinypic.com/2s6q8h2.jpg[/t]
it'd probably be impractical for solo play due to one factor or another (like, huge power draw of one big shot cripples you temporarily or blasts you off-course or whatever) but would be a mean hunting pack spearhead

it's only a size 3 gun. maybe I'm misinterpreting it since I'm not a huge military nut, but the whole idea of the A10 is the 'gun with a plane attached' idea right? which the avenger definitely is not.
its manouverable, it has cargo, and overall its weapon capacity is pretty much the same as the other single-seaters
I'm always quick to put the idea down because AFAIK CIG never painted it in that light, people just saw the size 6 (?) gun on the old stat page and their imaginations ran wild
imho we wont get an A10 variant either, it'll probably be cargo, police and e-war
it has always been billed as 2 things: large gun for its size, larger engine for its size
with lots of previous revisions on weapons and mounts having S# rankings crunched, it still has a gimballed S3 on its nose (essentially an S4 mount), something you flat out don't see til you reach the hornet. It's an incredibly powerful tool to have on a tiny nimble ship, even if there's only one
but the A10 doesn't plink at other aircraft casually, it's almost like a bomber right? avenger's slightly-bigger-gun doesn't really cut it
at any rate, I'd rather the 'gun with a ship attached' idea got it's own ship, used for taking out large ships as an alternative to bombers
a cool kinda left-field option would be a herald variant. strip out all the sensors, data and hardpoints to fit a massive spinal mount ion cannon that can disable capital ships

???
this is exactly the thing I've been putting forth regarding what I'd like to see more in line with the idea of a ship-attached-to-a-gun
[t]http://i58.tinypic.com/2s6q8h2.jpg[/t]
even the unveil write-up was rather specific about the idea, at the time being so confident in the nose gun that there weren't other weapon mounts at all, simply the fuel pylons
[t]http://i.imgur.com/Qp7qbV2.png[/t]
[t]https://robertsspaceindustries.com/media/cqlro7fturz3hr/source/Avenger_02.jpg[/t]
look at those dinky little barrels though
a 'plinky' gatling gun doesn't feel like what I'd expect from something branded 'marksman' so much as a high power/range/risk/reward tank cannon. Putting such a major weapon on a smaller ship is also a better way to balance it into glass cannon territory, you shouldn't see those weapons unless they're on a big ship that takes an army to overrun, or a small ship that's easily popped if caught out in the open
I say the meanest shit about Elite: Dangerous these days, for some reason. It's like my bias against it grows with time.
If SC lets me down, I'm done with space games, I think.
I hope you've got backup genres already lined up. I'm really into flight and racing sims lately and flight sims use a lot of the same equipment as a space sim does.
how big of a deal-breaker is Lifetime Insurance? I fell in love with the redeemer, it reminds me of Hind Helicopter gunship. The trouble is I don't know if I want to fork so much money over for a ship that doesn't come with LTI anymore, plus I wouldn't be able to play arena-commander.

Insurance will be like buying ammo and fuel for your guns. Not overly expensive.
Or like how ED does it. If you're competent enough, you should be able to cover your insurance.
how big of a deal-breaker is Lifetime Insurance? I fell in love with the redeemer, it reminds me of Hind Helicopter gunship. I don't think it's really an issue, having it is just a slight convienice really. They've said it won't take long to get enough to pay for ship insurance in-game. If you aren't going to play arena commander why not just wait until the game is out and earn the ship then?
Hey, this is just a bit long, but I'm going to lay down everything we know about insurance.
how big of a deal-breaker is Lifetime Insurance? I fell in love with the redeemer, it reminds me of Hind Helicopter gunship. LTI is simply free, automatically-renewing hull insurance offered as a convenience to early backers. One real month's worth of standard hull insurance is said to cost less than one mission payout appropriate to the ship you're insuring, so it's pretty cheap. You'll receive a warning if you try and leave the hangar in a ship you accidentally let lapse. So basically you have no excuse unless you are dead flat broke in an emergency situation during a run of bad luck. Unless the ship is stolen and still bears its original registry tags, then it's uninsurable because duh.
Falsifying regtags to make a ship insurable will be possible but is said to cost a significant portion of the retail cost of the ship, in the 75-90% range. This seems not particularly useful, at first, but it's to keep jacking and flipping ships from being too lucrative, and there's a second aspect to it: The fittings.
The ships we buy on the pledge store are going to be geared with, basically, pleb-tier equipment, with the exceptions being the limited luxury variants such as the Constellation Phoenix (which will have, say, 3/10-level equipment instead of the 1/10 and 2/10 gear stock on the rest), and the upgrade ladder in-game is said to be fairly tall, with prices escalating to match. It would not be unreasonable to expect one primary gun at 10/10 quality level (the best in the game, basically) to cost 10x the stock hull price of the ship it fits on. When you're looking at aftermarket parts having that sort of cost to them, paying 0.9x the cost of the retail ship to insure the ship you jacked with a ton of sweet parts is hella more justifiable.
There is only one really big unknown on insurance right now, and it's the in-game clock's time-scale. In-game time is not going to run 1:1 with real-time, and will be compressed according to some scale that we don't know yet and possibly CIG hasn't yet determined for themselves. This means that your package's six months of insurance will run for some length of time that is less than six real-time months. However, the tradeoff here is that, as far as we have been told in the most recent mentions of insurance, the clock will only tick down when you are logged in -- when you are offline, your policies freeze. How this plays into lending ships to others is an edge case CIG has yet to announce a solution for. :mystery:
On the topic of insurance and upgrade parts, hull insurance does not cover anything but the ship and its stock (shit) equipment. Component insurance is separate, and its rates are to be substantially higher -- and I have no idea what kind of margin is planned so I'm not even going to try and bs a number. Your cargo hold's contents are also covered by their own separate insurance policy with its own TBA price scaling. These are "unknown" but they're not mysteries like the timescale issue, it's just a matter of what kind of multiplier the economy needs them to be set to, they'll presumably operate much the same way (although cargo insurance could be a per-mission thing instead of a permanent sustained policy and could be assumed to be cheaper as a result).
So, all in all, LTI is simply the reassurance that you can't even accidentally lose a pledged ship to uninsured destruction. However, if you abuse your LTI for insurance fraud or cheap ramming boats, it'll be taken away from you.

Wouldn't it take forever to earn the in-game credits for a ship like that?
Wouldn't it take forever to earn the in-game credits for a ship like that?
Obviously you aren't going to get it right away, but earning credits is basically just playing the game. By buying ships you're pretty much giving them real money to skip a large part of the game.
Obviously you aren't going to get it right away, but earning credits is basically just playing the game. By buying ships you're pretty much giving them real money to skip a large part of the game.
oh yeah I completely understand, I'm just really cynical and expecting the grind to be bad as other games that allow you buy vehicles/skip grind. W/e maybe I'll just get an AC-compatible ship and be done with it like you guys are suggesting.
I ninja-edited my insurance post a bit more to basically be as definitive as we currently understand it (unless I've missed any memos lately - I'm not perfect), btw.
Obviously you aren't going to get it right away, but earning credits is basically just playing the game. By buying ships you're pretty much giving them real money to skip a large part of the game.
And only if your entire sense of progression in Star Citizen is tied solely to ship ownership. Someone who pledge-bought a Javelin has done quite well for themselves in terms of amassing a lot of credits in ship form into one place for day 1 of the live PU, but they now need to spend probably millions of credits fitting it with guns, need to hire NPCs or find friends to help crew it so it's not helpless and immediately jacked by the first org to fly past, and they could conceivably have serious troubles flying it anywhere due to jump point size restrictions and if they've made themselves an enemy of the UEE/other alien systems. The effect is reduced, but not eliminated, as you go down the ship roster towards the Auroras.
Yeah, it's undeniably a step up, but it's only a step up in one aspect.
Also, the plan is that once the game's economy is "live" (no more global wipes/resets), cash-for-ship sales stop altogether. So, the effect is limited at best. And CR has stated he hates grinding in games and doesn't intend on making ships be massive, monumental grinds to get. And anyone who buys lots of ships in the pledge store right now expecting to skip some incredible grind that everyone else will go through has no one to blame but themselves when, six months after launch, everyone who wants one has two Constellations and Concierge pledgeboy over there is not fucking special in the least.
Also, AtV.

Oh, and in my haste to cover the insurance topic I can't believe I missed this. Lamar, if you pledge for a package and the only ship you own with it is one that is not flyable in Arena Commander (or, soon, in the PU or AC), you get a loaner from the pool of available ships, with the loaner varying depending on the price bracket of the ship. I don't own a Redeemer so I don't know what ship it gets, but I would assume it's either a Hornet (which was the default for any ship more expensive than Hornets prior to the introduction of the) or a Cutlass, for now, and when multicrew comes out it'll change again. Disco Lando said on a recent RtV that multicrew ship owners will get a Constellation or Retaliator loaner in the baby PU when it launches (and which one depends, again, on the price bracket).
And it's only at this moment that I'm really excited for alpha 2.0 now, because I just realized that, until my Khartu-al is flyable, I will probably qualify for a Connie loaner -- the Taurus and the Khartu-al are the same price!

thanks for the wealth of information, I think I'll hold out a little longer then. Good to hear the grind might not be that obscene, because if acquiring a 265$ vehicle with in-game credits would be the same as it is in a Gajin or Wargaming game, it would take forever.

It won't be. Those games are like that to try to get players to give them real money or else put up with a huge grind. Star Citizen isn't going to be P2W.
Fluff-free notes from Reverse the Verse, transcribed live.
- Concierge-only citizen cards are available now for preorder, not personalized, $10 including shipping; available for roughly a month. The Latin reads, roughly, "Faithful until death". The production model will be black, not shiny metal like this product sample/prototype.
[t]https://i.imgur.com/c63Xz7j.jpg[/t] [t]https://i.imgur.com/xdK3TEc.jpg[/t]
- Cutlass deep-dive post due next week or the week after
- Crucible concept sale is "soon" and interior was being worked on by Randy (Vin Diesel clone)
- Personalized SQ42-themed dogtags will be coming for preorder in the new year, but the Concierge cards aren't being personalized because the personalized citizen cards were logistics hell
- According to Alexis, they won't disclose how many backers have Concierge, but a thread on the forums that suggests 1,000 C-levels is "way underestimating". [sp]Don't let shithead hear or he'll start crowing about whales again.[/sp]
- The Retaliator ejection pod video is actually old but the community team had never actually come across the video in their internal content database (Shotgun).
- CR is back home from working in the UK on SQ42, still working just as hard
- Ben and CR and the community team dug out a box of the original physical media of all of the special effects for the Wing Commander movie, so when CR gets the distribution rights back next year, things can be done with remastering outside of CIG time
- The community team is glad to move to the new offices in LA because the promenade outside (CIG Santa Monica is basically in a mall) has aggressive beggars and the office's frosted-glass door opens outward and nearly breaks some random shopper's face at least once a day.
- Ben clarifies that the motion capture capabilities of CIG LA's new offices (a stretch goal, I'm pretty sure) will be used for the ungodly amounts of mocap needed for generalized work (can this chair be sat in by a sitting human?), and the high-quality cinematic performance capture (which includes the face cameras/scanning tech) gets done in proper, professional mocap facilities as SQ42 has so far.
- The anniversary livestream is a 3-hour show on November 19th -- a week ahead of the actual calendar anniversary due to that overlapping with US Thanksgiving (and CIG being closed).
- Alpha 2.0 will include Connie and Tali as flyable multicrew ships; there may be some hangar-ready surprises but they don't have things nailed down and know better than to hype us on unknowns.
- Alpha 2.0 is in feature/code freeze for QA to find bugs for fixing, and Ben reminds us that the benefit of crowdfunding instead of having a publisher is being able to ship when it's ready, not with hundreds of major bugs on a deadline
- According to Ben, QA comes back with questions like "Which Avenger should players have as a default?" :wow:
- One blocker QA recently identified: If a Tali is spawned, nobody can connect to the instance. Whoops.
- The Connie will be the default loaner at first in 2.0 for most owned multicrew ships that aren't flyable; the criteria are still yet to be announced
- Company-wide 2.0 playtest yesterday went very well
- Self-service ship unmelting is being developed by Turbulent, but pretty much guaranteed not ready before 2.0, probably even longer, and don't expect any unmelting to happen with CS before the anniversary sale in two weeks
- The Connie Phoenix's P-72 Archimedes is concept-complete except for a blueprint, now proceeding to implementation. I personally think it's going to be revealed during the anniversary sale.
- The next Star Citizen patch should be Alpha 2.0, not 1.3.1.
- The Merlin will not be able to dock with the Connie in 2.0; Chris said in 2.1 or 2.2 (maybe)
- People keep asking the community team "when" questions even though they never answer them except for "soon" or "not soon".
- Lanyards being investigated for potential physical merch/event swag, more hoodies being looked at, but selling hoodies in the Spring is nonsensical
- Anniversary livestream will have a look at the HOTAS
- 10FTC answers the question "how will we load into our hangars in 2.0"; previous mention was made of work going towards a menu so you don't have to load into the hangar automatically at game launch.
- More info on Casaba Outlet coming soon; mentioned in monthly report, community team hoping to do a segment on it when they visit the PU team in Austin
- Foundry 42 have taken over the Freelancer rework and are reconcepting parts of the inside to bring them up to spec with F42's ship standards. It's the next big rework after the Connie, and the legacy-refit pipeline should be more efficient after being proven with the Connie.
- The Connie was first because it hits all multicrew ship demands (modular system, multicrew, etc.) and there are a lot of Connie owners
- There will be a holiday livestream in mid-December this year
- Reliant "surprises" in the monthly report
- CIG would love to release Alpha 2.0 during the anniversary livestream, but events don't dictate development's release deadlines. If it's ready, they will, if it isn't, they won't try and whip the devs into pulling it off.
According to Alexis, they won't disclose how many backers have Concierge, but a thread on the forums that suggests 1,000 C-levels is "way underestimating".
the concierge forum is surprisingly lively, but (judging by the rest of the forum) I'd bet it's only a small portion of those eligible to post there.
Threads are 75% "question about [X thing]" or "who else owns an idris :)", with some off topic threads here and there.
If it helps you build a picture though:

There are too many Constellation and Retaliator Updates. Nobody really wants to fly those in Alpha 2.0.
What they really want is a flyable Freelancer.
