See all this crowdfunding and early access hoo hah has me really confused as to how this game is going to be shipped? Is it a subscrition MMO? Is it a one time buy thing? Is it F2P? Is it actually a game and not just a premium ship concept buying simulator where you pretend to buy virtual ships?
You buy the game once and you never have to pay another cent. There is no subscription and it is not free to play. It will eventually be a game, and unless CIG goes back on their word you will not be able to buy ships with real money once the game goes live. You can only purchase ships for exorbitant prices as a means to fund the game and as proof of CIG's unbelievable marketing game. There is a loophole in that you can buy credits with real world money both now and after the game goes live. However, there is a strict limit set on how much and how often you can buy. If the current setup is any indication, you will not be able to convert money quickly enough for it to have a major impact on the economy and your game. I.e., some rich fuck can't just buy himself a fully kitted out capital ship, let alone a fighter with top tier equipment. It's worth saying though that as the "game" stands right now, it is the 100% by the books, dictionary example, of pay to win. However again, that is hopefully just something to put up with until more concrete game mechanics get put in such as the Arena Commander funny bucks to allow us to upgrade weapons and ships in AC. Said funny bucks will not count towards the persistent universe, and will only exist for testing purposes.
To clarify on the buying UEC (in game money) it's a limited amount per month and IIRC the quoted number was 150k max purchased UEC in your account at any one time. That was a while back though so obviously it's subject to change, but that should give you a rough idea.
All thing considered I'm surprised there is no mention of being able to pay to pretty up your ship. In my head I picture a Mustang Beta-S which is a mustang beta with silver highlights. etc.. Unless I missed something, I'm not properly keeping up with this game as part of a new "stay off the hype train" policy I've been following.

I can't remember if they implemented a basic paint thing in 1.0 (just for the variants, no customizing yet) or if it was planned for just a bit after.

Said funny bucks will not count towards the persistent universe, and will only exist for testing purposes.
And to point out, the next major update to Arena Commander, AC1.1 (the patch next week is mostly fixes to AC1.0, so it's 1.0.1 -- confusing naming, much?) is slated to have the ACbucks system, so it's really not long before Voyager Direct is useful for people other than rich kids. Ben has specifically said not to buy things from Voyager Direct right now (to use in AC, that is) because the ACbucks system is coming, and the costs of the equipment are very expensive in real-cash terms because their prices have been balanced for the PU economy. When ACbucks comes around, though, the AC-only versions of gear should be cheaper since they don't carry over to the PU and don't constitute a balance threat. However, they're working on that, and the rollout of user functionality will probably be in stages. At first, we probably won't be able to create our own designs, but we'll be able to choose the colour scheme for the ship's existing design (e.g. changing the Mustang Beta's blue for red or something). Later, we'll have some sort of design creation tool. Spoiler: We're getting a New Year's present, probably with this next patch, although the files were included in AC1.0. I think this is my best kill I got so far, felt so satisfying [vid]http://3kv.in/~techbot/ShareX/2015/01/17/the%20most%20satisfying%20kill%20ever.webm[/vid]
hmm I completely forgot about this game, I'm terrible at dogfights and will probably be looking into doing cargo roles instead, also can I just hop into someone else's ship and man their guns? I really hope my aging computer will be enough to run this game when it releases. [editline]17th January 2015[/editline] I'm also assuming that if you bought a ship(with real money from packages, etc) and it gets completely destroyed, you can get it again for free? I'm seeing life time insurance in the awards thingy. Just to make sure after release you can somehow grind your way to building better ships right? That reclaimer ship has me interested

I'm seeing life time insurance in the awards thingy. Just to make sure after release you can somehow grind your way to building better ships right? That reclaimer ship has me interested
You can hop into someone's ship and man their guns in one of two ways: 1) You board the ship and take off into space with them at the start. Or, 2) They have hired NPC crew, and you'll be able to "possess" an NPC crew to instantly join your friend without having to actually move your character out there. It's not 100% clear how this will work, but this's what Chris Roberts said about it fairly recently. With respect to ship destruction, you'll get a replacement as long as you have insurance. In-game insurance is stated to be cheap, and in most circumstances if you leave your hangar in an uninsured ship it's probably your own fault, unless you're not able to participate in the standard insurance system (because you're a criminal outlaw, for example, but then you just steal someone else's...). Lifetime insurance just skips the cost and renewal process, and should also work for pirates who otherwise couldn't participate. Note that you will get your replacement ship with stock parts only; any aftermarket modifications you've made aren't covered, and component insurance (to cover those mods) is a big question mark at the moment but is implied to cost a lot more than hull insurance. Your cargo is a separate matter as well. However, if you commit insurance fraud in-game, your policies may be cancelled (on the ships being used to abuse the system), and if you abuse LTI for insurance fraud or as a cheap ramming ship, it can be taken away from you as well. Replacements aren't always instant, either. Your replacement ship has to actually come out of the economy system -- there has to be ore and resources coming into factories to build the ship which then gets delivered to you. Getting a Reclaimer replaced may take real-life days, as resources are collected and the ship's actually built. And if you make multiple claims in a short period of time, the replacement time starts getting longer as intentional delays get built in to negate abusive behaviour (like using insurance ships for kamikaze attacks). As for your computer, the current minimum specs are 8GB of RAM and a quad-core CPU. It's also very demanding graphically. The current builds are unoptimized on top of that, but it's still in development of course.
So this game will feature shipwalking... that one thing from space sims that has been spoken of in myth but never fully realized... But not only that... FPS combat gameplay where you BOARD ANOTHER PERSONS FUKKEN SHIP? Now I'm still going to maintain some cautious optimism about this game but goodness me it's one to put on the watch list.
Did my tri-monthly SC update since my internet is shite and I can't keep it up to date all the time. The UI is totally broken for some reason and apparently the hornet doesn't have the little minigun it used to have? Also I can't missle lock onto anyone for some reason. I feel like I should just uninstall this and come back when it's nearly out but by then everyone else will have had loads of practice by then haha.
Cautious optimism is the smart thing to do. There's too many people who get way over-excited about this and create this mental picture of a game that will never be realized. In other news, my favorite developer Zane has a video where he talks to a tour group about the cockpit control and display changes that he's currently working on. None of what he says is really new per se (he's mentioned a lot of this in his AtV interview) but this is the first time we really see it. Basically this proves that he wasn't kidding when he said DCS was his inspiration and he wanted to make the Star Citizen cockpits like those. For those too lazy to watch the video, here's the highlights: First is the new 300i cockpit, showing all the in cockpit information. It's a bit flashier than it should be, but that's Origin's design because they're a luxury civilian brand, not a military arms manufacturer. The second and third are the Gladius cockpit, which is an older pure military ship with a lot of manual controls and hard screens versus holograms. Auxiliary controls are what the third picture is focused on, and those are where the specific and minor adjustments for your ship will live. Minor things like fine tuning the way your IFCS works or your HUD displays some information. It's all separated into blocks so that the designers can place them wherever, and the players can upgrade their ship controls. As you upgrade them, you get more switches and options and eventually you can upgrade them far enough that they become LCD screens with tons of options. There is also now going to be standardization with how cockpits are going to be built so that they don't have to invent specific screens and controls for ships because otherwise it becomes an unreasonable amount of work. Cockpit design is one of biggest interests when it comes to real life planes and how God awfully designed the cockpits in Star Citizen are is something I could (and have) ramble on about hours on end. They've been getting a little better with it, especially when Foundry 42 gets their hands on one, but it's still not where I'd like it to be. Unlike most space sims, cockpits actually matter here because they're not just cosmetic set dressing. They need to get them right, and thankfully looks like Zane really wants to do it. I can't say for sure if he will be able to get all the stuff he wants into the game, but at least there's someone who genuinely cares working on it, and that's the best I could hope for.
set your language in your launcher, and if it still happens delete your USER folder
Did my tri-monthly SC update since my internet is shite and I can't keep it up to date all the time. The UI is totally broken for some reason and apparently the hornet doesn't have the little minigun it used to have? Also I can't missle lock onto anyone for some reason.
All Hornets had the fixed nose gun removed intentionally in the recent AC1.0 patch; it's a balance issue. It might come back in the future as balance continues to settle. There is also a bug right now where attaching extra guns to ship parts does not hook them up to the power and heat systems, so they'll stop working as soon as they run out of power. It's fixed internally and should roll out with the AC 1.0.1 patch this week that's mostly bugfixes to 1.0. Like Techbot says, you have to click on the language dropdown in the launcher -- even though it defaults to displaying English. SC now has French localization, and there was a bug in the launcher where it doesn't correctly set a default localization, so you get the unlocalized UI string placeholders instead. Some of these still display wrong in-game even after you've set the language, but that's just alpha for you. And, when in doubt, delete the USER folder as a first step to fix weirdness. I've had all sorts of dumb shit happen from corrupted XML, like an Aurora launching into space with no: - Power plant - Thruster - Targeting computer - Avionics computer - Cockpit chair If you're patching and you know it, nuke USER! ♪ If you're patching and you know it, nuke USER! If you're patching and you know it, ♪ And you know that CIG has blown it If you're patching and you know it, nuke USER! ♪ Also, something important to know about missiles now: You can multilock and salvo fire. Click mouse3 to lock a missile. Clicking again will lock a second missile. HOLD mouse3 to fire all locked missiles. Certain ships, like the 325a and its advanced targeting computer, can lock multiple ships at once and fire missiles at all of them in a salvo (I think?). Also, fuckin' Zane is awesome. According to the Reddit thread by one of the guys who was in that same visit, they were under an NDA. After they left Zane, it was cameras off, and then "later it was REALLY cameras off", and because of the NDA they can't reveal what they got to see. However, probably got to play internal builds of the fps and planetside modules, and CIG's good about giving us reveals and sneak peeks. That cockpit modularity stuff is boner-inducing. I can't wait to see what he's done with the Khartu-Al's UI, sweet jesus
Thanks guys, that seems to have done the trick.
It's Monday, so Also, I asked in the new 10FTC thread what beds/cabin furnishings are for, gameplay-wise, now that beds aren't necessary for safe logout in space.
CIG anticipates that you may play SQ42 while the playing in the PU so CIG is thinking about a "Campaign Diary" that'll unlock things in the PU as a later version of your self.
So Squadron 42 is basically your character recalling their war trauma.
Well, if you play SQ42 on a character after you create that character in the PU and launch into space, pretty much. But also the triumphs, since I presume SQ42 isn't going to be Space Ops: The Line.
I think Chris said he was adding robotic limbs and stuff. Probably pricy in game world but doable?
He's talking about suddenly retconning your guy. Basically, your character will be safe in his living quarters in the PU, writing his diary about his days in the UEE Navy. And then he walks out into the hangar and the diary-writing has suddenly turned his leg into a prosthetic, with no medical intervention in the room. If you've already started the PU, going back to SQ42 to complete it creates timeline problems if your SQ42 play performance causes permanent visual changes to your character (like catastrophic limb damage) "in the past" that wasn't there on your character's first day in the PU. I'm sure they'll just handwave it entirely by not addressing the temporal paradox, or maybe the UEE is really good at reconstructive surgery for wounded pilots. I think I'll put that in the 10FTC question thread.

The only way I can see that working is you have a "prosthetic" limb that looks exactly like the real thing. Then that brings up dying in SQ42. That would cause some interesting paradoxes.

I for one can't wait to wake up from my PTSD induced nightmares to find out I have no limbs. Truly this is the future of gaming.

They could just do like MGS3.
Well, I've posted the question to the 10FTC thread. Hopefully it gets picked by Will. I wonder what'd happen to your character if you started the PU as a law-abiding citizen and built up some Advocacy rep as a good guy... and then you take the outlaw exit from SQ42 by killing your CO and fleeing in a stolen Navy fighter. :v:
