Just got into a public free flight game

yay for parts flying off
I am quite satisfied with this outcome.
I think wrecking Warlord's shit with those size 2 missiles is proof positive that the Gladius can tangle with the Hornet, don't you?

News from the presentation:
Gymbal mounts:
Most size-2 or larger gun mounts can now take a gymbal mount that can mount one size smaller guns (gymbal in size 2 -> size 1 guns on gymbal)
Electronic Access was bought out by Original Systems and is now their electronic rental storefront. Buuurn. (It's the REC store.)
The new damage model includes deformation, thickness, temperature, and burns, not just broken shit.
now we got id software :v:
honestly blown away by the new damage system, totally surpassed my highest expectations
and when the retaliator goes on sale I predict a lot of melted constellations

And now I'm sold on the Retaliator as well... my poor fecking wallet....
How much is it again?
-snip-
I think the Tali was $250 on concept sale.

Probably around 300 when it's put on sale.
Eh... I can wait. Or melt my Connie. But I don't want to, since it's good for more than just military ops.

I'll be in my bunk
I only hope the Constellation rework makes it worth keeping one of those over the Retaliator. I'm sick and tired of seeing the inside of my connie look like it's been, in the words of a guy on the SC forums, "Leased out to a frat party or worked over by guys with sledgehammers".
now we got id software :v:
Tried to rate this winner and rated it dumb instead. I suck.
What do you mean, id software? Did CiG acquire them or something?
BadNewsBaron's shitty potato-ass livestream is the only live stream we got (he was on a phone on 4G, so it's not his fault that the quality was terrible), and it's now up for VOD. Link is timecoded to skip to when CR walks on stage.

From the presentation:
InterDimension Software
A startup through and through, InterDimension Software is the brainchild of the 'two Jims', holo-level builder James Romanov and tech designer James Vandyke. After minor successes with younger-skewing games like Admiral Cool and Tiger 3D, InterDimensional has become a household name with the release of the ultra-realistic combat simulator...
Star Marine!
[sp]Commander Keen and Wolf 3D[/sp]
Also, the blurb for "EA":
Electronic Access
How the mighty have fallen!
The Electronic Access name once belonged to a giant in the industry, a holo-publisher which prided itself in supporting the artistic vision of their developers. But the publsher that released titles such as Cartel and Sector Blast is long gone.
Electronic Access today is little more than the branding for Original Systems' electronic rental storefront.
[sp]Syndicate and... Cel Damage? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cel_Damage I duno wtf Sector Blast is a reference to, I'm retarded and it's probably obvious but yeah[/sp]

Might even be Doom instead of Commander Keen. At least, that's what Star Marine brings to mind, and iD was behind that as well :V
Admiral Cool
Of course "Star Marine" is a reference to Doom.

Ah! Clearly I didn't read the whole thing properly.
So i'm downloading the installer to see if I like the flying/general shooting of this game.
Just got a few questions:
Do they have a release schedule?
If I were to like the game and buy a ship, I remember a long time ago you could get Life time insurance on your ships, which I wanted to do but never had the $$ available to purchase. What ship would be ideal to get at ~$100?
Also if anyone can give the quick basics on how to obtain other ships (in game creds? stealing? buying with $?)
Thanks!

Here's a very poor picture taken from today's PAX.

Personally I think at this point in development it's silly to buy a ship more expensive than the bare minimum, but if you're dead set on spending a hundred dollars it depends on what kind of ship you're looking for. Avenger is general purpose, Gladius is a dedicated fighter, Mustang is the cheapo glass cannon fighter, Aurora is a pickup truck, 300i is... something. I'd go with the Mustang because I like shooting and it's actually a pretty decent fighter despite being at the bottom of the combat totem pole. If you're going for bare minimum it's either the Mustang or more trade-focused Aurora.
If you raise the price to $125 then you start getting the more interesting options like the Hornet, Cutlass, and Freelancer, but I have a hard time recommending anybody spend more than like $50 on this game.
Once the game goes live in 7 years, you'll be able to earn all the ships ingame like you would any other game. You'll get money by mission running, trading, all the usual stuff. Stealing ships is a thing, but it won't be easy.
The only reason to buy something really expensive right now is if you really want a head start when the PU goes live, or you want to win in Arena Commander multiplayer.

So what would be the best + cheapest ship for someone who likes to lone wolf / probably going to like the FPS aspect / pirating to make creds in game?
I guess something speedy and is able to carry a decent amount of stuff + get to sell it quick.

If you want to do anything combat related, get the Mustang. It's also faster than the Aurora. According to the ship stats page it has zero cargo, but I'm fairly sure that's not right and it can stuff a small cargo pod in that big empty space under the ship. It's also worth mentioning that if you're buying a ship so you can wreck poor people in Arena Commander, REC is coming next week. It'll allow you to earn ingame money to rent ships instead of having to spend real life money.
I'm pretty jaded on the whole subject though, so wait for one of our resident fanboys to get to your question for a second opinion before pulling the trigger on anything. There's no rush.

I'm guessing I have to buy a ship + the arena commander pass to earn the credits? I might buy a cheapo ship and hope I can get enough money to rent a variation of ships to see what I like before I buy them.
"Next few months". So they're not releasing the FPS module this month, then? Damn. Until now they'd been saying they'd release BOTH the FPS and social module this month.
Anyway, after a whole day downloading the PTU client, I finally got in and did a bit of running around in my hangar. I've confirmed that the Super Hornet's ball turret can still hold size two badgers, and the wings can mount gimballed weapons up to size 3. (The mount has a max size of four, so that makes sense). The canard turret, however, now holds a size 1 maximum. As this is exactly how the Hornet and its components were first advertised, I have no complaint whatsoever. Henceforward, only Super Hornet variants will be able to have four Omnisky VI laser cannons (Or an F7C that has been outfitted with the SH's ball turret). The other Hornet variants will be restricted to a maximum of two Omnisky cannons plus size 1 weapons on the mount. As there are relatively few Super Hornets in circulation at this time, it's pretty good overall.
I also caved in, bought a Gladius, and am about to fly it around a bit. Will post impressions.
pretty sure they never said march for social
and he said 2-3 weeks for fps
Still holding out hope for FPS in March, then.
[editline]8th March 2015[/editline]
It might've been misinformation I encountered on the forums that led me to believe the social module would be out this month, too.

Gladius review time. I'll be comparing it to the Hornet, since the Gladius, in-fiction, was the UEE's primary short-range dogfighter before it was phased out in favour of the Hornet.
Its acceleration is ridiculous - Closer to the M50 than any other ship I've flown.
Unlike the Hornet, which takes its time getting up to speed, and will drift for a long, long way when you make sharp turns, this thing will corner very, very quickly. You don't want to make a sharp vertical attitude change when you're going at full speed (220m/s) or you're going to come very close to a black/red out. While the Hornet has to rely on its finite boost supply to make evasive maneuvers or to stick close to a target, I was afraid to use boost in this thing because of how quickly it naturally maneuvers. I'm sure seasoned dogfighters will be able to employ it better, and this thing in the right hands could fly circles around a Hornet. Its translational acceleration (up, down, and sideways) was also excellent. I recommend you fly decoupled if you know what you're doing.
Now on to its armaments and dogfighting. Sadly, whether because my PTU patch was broken or because the current PTU build is broken, I was not able to mount the fixed size 1 guns on the wingtips. It features four missile racks: Two dual-missile racks, which can hold up to four size one or size two missiles, and two single missile racks, each of which can hold a size 3 missile for a total of six.
In combat, the cannon mounted on the nose chewed up the Vanduul fairly well. It did not kill them as quickly as I'm sure I could have if I were able to mount the wingtip guns, but it had a very good rate of fire and respectable damage. The shields were decent, while not as robust as that of the Hornet, but I found I got hit a lot less as I was able to get out of the way more quickly. The missiles were awesome. The four size two missiles on the wings required one hit each to kill Warlord and Vixen, and almost always instantly killed the named Vanduul Glaives I used them on. Compared to these, the tiny missiles I'd been using on the Hornet would only be able to do a little damage after piercing a full-strength shield, even on the Vanduul. As I was not able to change my missile type with my control setup, I regrettably didn't get to test the size 3s. I was able to outmaneuver the missiles launched by the Glaives without deploying countermeasures.
In summary, here are what I consider the strengths and weaknesses of the Gladius to be. While the Hornet, with its slow maneuvering, heavy armor and guns makes a very good defensive escort, the Gladius is designed offensively - to get in to a target location, hit them hard, and get out again just as quickly. If it finds itself in trouble, its gimballed cannon and fixed guns should be able to get it out and take out most opponents, but it's probably not going to do very well in a sustained close-quarters fight with a ship like the Hornet. Hanging back, using its maneuverability to stay out of the line of fire and using missiles fits its style best. Its armor is not very strong at all. Better than a Mustang, probably better than a 300-series ship, but still can't take nearly as much punishment as the Hornet can.
I'm going to guess the Gladius won't really come into its own until we have larger maps and objective-based matches.
Here's what I wish it did better: I wish that the fixed mounts on the wings were size 2, so that size 1 gimballed guns could be attached (That's something coming to almost all size 2 and above fixed mounts, by the way). Its single gimballed mount and its two small fixed mounts (being as far apart as they are) make the setup rather impractical with some weapons. The Gladius could do with a top speed closer to 250, the better to fit its interceptor role. That would also make the ship a contender as a racer and allow it to do better in gamemodes like Capture the Core, and I think that would be awesome. It's built to look fast, it should have a speed to match.
Elsewhere in the presentation CR said they're aiming to get the fps module out before the end of March. Obviously, CIG time means it'll only come out when it's ready.
There was some rumours that 1.1, fps, and social would be glommed together into one huge update. However, if you think about what kind of bugs you get from trying to cram three major updates into one megaupdate, you'll know this was super unlikely unless it came out of CR's mouth (then it's just improbable).

Hoho, that's not happening. They are in full on alpha mode, releasing two updates at the same time is a crazy mans dream right now.
Also, I've awoken to find a whole shitload of good news today. Damage states, retaliator, them taking the piss at EA and ID, etc.
This hype train really has no brakes.

Still, I'm hoping they can deliver on a (partially) stable FPS build by the end of this month. That'd be nice. :(
Funny how by what I've seen the FPS module is little more than a run of the mill FPS, but in the context of being on a player controlled ship traveling from god knows where to who the fuck knows and could at any moment ram into an asteroid...
