Retaliator in hangar in PTU:

The poly count on this thing must be several million. Damn.
why do you say that? looks similar to the constellation in terms of polys
lighting an materials are worth 10x more than poly count in making it look awesome
All Hornet variants in the PTU build now fold their wings back when properly landed. I bet you could even fit one in a Constellation's cargo hold, it really reduces their profile.

The Connie didn't have so much tiny geometry - Wires, ridges in the floor, etc.

So I bought the arena commander module pass so I could try out all the spaceships they allow for the free week of play.
My comp froze the first time I tried loading the game, second time I got in but there was a lot of stuttering. (assuming because I went from having one ship in my hangar/1 room to several rooms and several ships.
I'm assuming that means I need to upgrade from 8 gigs of ram to 16? (if that's the case, can I just buy another set of 8 gigs, or do I have to buy a 4 set of 16 gigs?)

Seeing that thing from the side when he first walks in reminds me a lot of the B1 Lancer.
I thought of an interesting way to balance food and living spaces and the like, giving ships like the mustang beta purpose, without going over the top with eating and shitting etc
what if every ship has a 'provisions' store, a consumable resource similar to fuel
so like fuel, provisions are consumed while out in space, though unlike fuel they would drain even while floating still or mining etc, so where fuel is a distance limitation, provisions is a time limitation
provisions is probably a bad name, because instead of just food and water it also indicates the sort of general 'livability' of the ship - a beta would have an enormous provision store due to the kitchen and living space, allowing you to stay out there for weeks, whilst a hornet would have a very low amount, even with a cargo bay installed, due to the simple fact that you can only stay sane so long while cooped up in a cockpit
this would give a hard limit to the range you can travel in a ship, since fuel can be scooped up at any gas giant, but you would have to land/dock somewhere or trade with someone to restore provisions
probably a bit asinine, but I think it would help balance a lot of ships eg the m50 and herald could have low provisions, making them high-maintenance, but their their range isn't as limited since they are fast and provisions is time-limiting
it would also give capital ships more of a functional 'home base' kind of feel if they had unlimited provisions and other ships could restock there

Seems like the kind of thing that would either be annoying, because you have to restock too often or rather pointless, because by the time you have to restock you were heading back to a station/planet/etc anyway.
I like the idea, but only if provisions are only used up through an eating animation.
No hunger bars please. If your char had to eat it shouldn't be x/200 hunger, but more like you lose some kind of vision/stats after x time until you replenish. But honestly I'm not a fan of having to feed your char, would much rather it be a ship resource that gets consumed based on how many crew members you have.
I think time based provisions would be pretty cool. Kind of like Sunless Sea, making it something that would hinder insanely long voyages without buying extra or making stops, but not so much you'll have to restock every 3-4 system/dock(like sunless sea)

Agreed. No hunger bars, but I'm not fond of the idea of time-based provisions, either.

It might help a lot if you set your graphics settings to something under 'very high' and make sure you have no background apps running, not even Chrome.

that's sort of the point of having it on different ships, exploration ships trivialize it so you never have to care, but it makes it really awkward to try taking a hornet from one side of the galaxy to another
so yeah, I guess it's supposed to be annoying, if you're using an unfitting ship
hard to tell before we experience how the PU actually plays out
I rather food be an RP thing. You can eat it if you want, but you don't need to.
The system is also expandable; if we ever need a gun that’s more than forty meters long, we have the ability to generate it in Star Citizen!
I downloaded all 30 gigs of the PTU just so I could see my Tali.

Worth it.
How does PTU work? I mean how do they update it: weekly/daily/random?
Are there also patchnotes for it? Most recent i see is over 1 month old this:

I'm pretty new to this. Just wondering how they apply changes to PTU.
The PTU is a sandbox clone of the live servers, but it's only to when needed and it's usually brought online to test an impending patch before it goes live to everyone. In this case, it's running 1.1 release candidate 2 (not an official patch designation, my summary).
PTU patch notes are handled in a SC forum thread (a new one every time). It's a last chance for QA to smoketest the patch and for devs to fix any showstoppers.

I was just surprised that there was once again 15-20gb worth of patches today even though i patched it 1 day ago.
My game folder is already taking 50gb of hdd space.
The PTU got a second patch; it'll go live early next week unless there are sudden delays at the last second.
And, yes, the patching sucks right now, they're working on delta patches.

Delta?
Where only what needs to be redownloaded gets downloaded, instead of the entire file, which can sometimes be an entire 1GB asset library being redownloaded because 14 textures were updated. Where instead of throwing out and replacing an entire binder full of pages and pages of stuff, you download page 4 with instructions to the installer to replace page 4 in binder X with the new page 4, instead of downloading binder X all over again.
I wonder how many Phoenix and 890 Jump owners looked at the Gladius damage model and said "I am never flying this thing outside".
Also, the weapons mount design post is up, as is the monthly Letter from CR. According to the letter, 1.1 was held back so they could polish multiplayer free-flight and the new landing shit a bit more. After all, they kind of just threw multiplayer FF in and expected it to just work, and it didn't quite do that.
From the letter:
When it goes live next week (barring serious issues!) Star Citizen 1.1 will add the Retaliator, the Gladius, the REC system, multiplayer free flight, improvements to the flight model, manual and automatic landings... and then behind the screens it will premiere things like the 64-bit floating point that will soon allow us to create significantly larger maps. But perhaps the single most important thing about 1.1 is that it's Star Citizen and not Arena Commander.: With 1.1, we're doing a lot behind the scenes to set up rapid expansion that you'll see over the next few months as we add Star Marine and the social module to the Star Citizen experience. You'll still see plenty of changes and enhancements to Arena Commander, which forms the basis for our spaceflight system, but I now see us building the full game out in many directions.
I think it needs a 0. in front of it or else people will think the game's launched already, and for the absolute newbie CIG/Star Citizen is already a confusing enough concept to grasp in 10 seconds (which is about how much time they'll spend thinking about it on their way through a gaming site's articles).
In honor of this achievement and the impending launch of 1.1, I'm going to go ahead and start everyone off with 5,000 REC.
Woot
Are we currently suppose to have access to like 15 ships?
Yes, there's a free fly weekend for all flyable ships. If it works in AC, you can fly it this week, starting yesterday.
Urgh I'm miffed the M50 isn't on sale any more. I was flying it earlier and even though it takes a lot longer to kill enemies than the Super Hornet, it's a lot more fun to run rings around the Vanduul and outrun missiles.
Too bad it's only got size 1 mounts, I'd like to slap a pair of Badgers on that.

Admiral Roberts and Lord British shoot the shit about zero-g during interview setup.
Delta?
patching only what needs to be instead of downloading the entire game again every time there's an update

I melted my m50. the size 1 mounts are extremely limiting in pvp, even though they're ok for VS
some people make it work, but only by abusing broken size 1 weapons like the mass driver and omnisky 3, anything else and the damage is just pitiful
if you want a really agile ship, the gladius looks like a good choice now, they buffed the speed to 240m/s and made the wing mounts size 2
it's also not made from cardboard and cardboard derivatives like the m50
How agile is it?
[editline]14th March 2015[/editline]
Also, I might wait until the Bulldog goes on sale. I'm primarily playing as an Escort so I want to be able to follow people on long range missions.

Uh, you can already change equipment on ships?
How? I thought all weapons are fixed for ships.
you've been able to change equipment for like a year and a half, use the holotable
