Star Citizen Megathread - Fly FREE thru Dec 14th! Link in OP

So can we assume from the mining outline that there will be no planet side mining? If so that's kind of unfortunate.
Woot, patched! And the Gladius is on the free-flight table. Let's see how this thing flies, and how much REC I get for a VS match.
uggghh fuckin Space Justice Warriors just wont shut up
T’ral Falrant: Words carry weight. By calling it a manned turret, the implication, whether intentional or not, is one of exclusion. If you look up the definition of “manned” it literally means having a Human crew. Our petition simply requests that the official Guild term for them to be called physically operated turrets.
What about the argument that this is a term that’s been used for millennia, well before Humans even knew of the existence of other sentient species.
T’ral Falrant: That is an argument for how the term came into existence, not one for why we must continue to use it. ... That’s what I want Guild members to understand; speciesism isn’t just about hurt feelings. Not in this job.
The saddest thing is that as someone studying the social sciences in a professional capacity I have to admit that the hypothetical alien guy's got a point, even if it is nitpicky as shit.
So I finally bit the bullet and bought a pack today. A short chronicle of my experiences thus far:
a) HTTP error on first DL. Complete restart.
b) Storage capacity error, second DL. Apparently "25 gigs required" actually means "60+ gigs required." Complete restart.
c) Download completes, patch applies. "Unable to find update path." Surprise, it's another wasted download!
So I'm now on my second complete (and fourth partial) download of the game client since I bought the game earlier today. That's over 70 gigs of wasted downloads, and from what I'm reading on the forums it's a 50/50 chance this copy of the client will end up the same way my last one did. Is there some reason this patch is such a clusterfuck, or is this just the experience I should expect from CIG?
That's a bit unusual, yeah. However, expect about double the final install size to be needed during the install, as it basically takes the install files and then extracts a (second) copy of the assets in the right place, then deletes the original downloaded installer files, IIRC.
I put SC in D:\Games\SC and it hasn't had any issues, but it used to want to install to My Documents and now wants to default to Program Files; if you left it to defaults, that may have something to do with it.
Make sure the launcher is running as admin, if somehow it isn't asking for permission on launch. I'm sure this isn't it, but it'd be really dumb if it was something this simple.
Also, I earned zero REC; I guess 6 waves (I got bored and decided to try cashing out to see if it'd give me REC) isn't enough. Also, the Gladius didn't seem to be triggering its sexy damage states properly, but I haven't cleared USER either so, who knows if that's the issue.
How do you change where the launcher installs (star citizen) to? Do you have to do it while installing the launcher itself?
yes, though it's perfectly alright to close the installer and manually copy Star Citizen to a new directory and continue from there
Sadly, they've made a change that screws gamepad users like myself yet again. The Super Hornet can no longer mount more than two identical weapons - Meaning I couldn't go with quad badgers between the ball turret and wings.

Go into the launcher settings, enable advanced settings if necessary, and, check "Enable patch repair" if this happens again, btw.
seems like i have access to a lot more stuff than before on the holotable.
By the way, i forgot to backup my performance config file before reinstalling, does anyone have a link to an example of one with the options with motionblur and shit turned off. There was a required command too that nothing else would execute without which i forget.
con_restricted = 0
Also, right now, the holotable is likely still showing you the all-ships free fly week while it lasts. The paint category is new, too, for skinning; only Auroras and buggies for the moment.
AC1.1 manual, too.
I went into a public free flight match and this is just hilariously fun. Landed, went over to the other pad, stole a ship, mowed down some fleshies still scurrying about on the landing pad.

the hype is real.
People in free flight are dicks. I want to play with some of you guys instead.
Anyone else have this problem?

Game goes minimized as soon as i launch it and there is a very little chance of getting it maximized.
Just bought the mustang alpha pack after trying that free weekend. Even though im extremely outgunned when it comes to dogfights, the game is extremely fun. My first match involved me getting wrecked by fellow pilots flying Hornets with cannons that seemed to rip me apart in seconds. I just found the holotable so hopefully i can get on some sort of level playing field. Anybody have any tips for a new guy flying the Mustang against the Hornets?
The Mustangs have very powerful maneuvering thrusters (for real, they're very powerful in the stats atm), and Hornets are big fat cows that drift around while flying because they're so heavy. Use this to your advantage, as the Hornets have superior firepower.
In other words, it'll take some time for you to learn how to fly decoupled, but it'll be useful to outmaneuver the Hornets. Your Mustang Alpha's reasonably fragle and lightly-gunned by comparison, but you're also more agile.
I'd suggest practicing with Vanduul Swarm, too, as well as just flying around in free-flight. Tab decouples your rotation from your direction of travel, allowing you 6DoF (while stopping primary engine thrust, so you're now drifting in a straight line if you don't use thrusters to strafe) and the ability to face backwards and shoot people coming from your six. Remember that you're not in atmosphere, so you can afford to 'stall' and spin backwards in place.
We should organize some FPcorp AC this weekend. Who's in for free flights or co-op VS later tonight and/or tomorrow?

Go into the launcher, enable advanced options, and hit the red 'reset to defaults' button and then try launching. Try also windowed mode (you may need to set this in config if it still acts like this on launch, and we can explain how/where).
Just launched the game for the very first time (backed during the crowdfunding) and the FPS is completely unplayable even on low settings... What gives? There's also just a hangar to run around in and nothing else as far as I can tell?
I'm down for some free flight today/night, just need to let 1.1 finish downloading...

I think you'll need to put up your specs for any idea of that, and it's the Arena Commander mode in the escape menu.

1) Go here, place your ship(s) in your hangar, press save.
2) You can enter Arena Commander by hitting esc, or by walking up to the sim pod and using it. I'm not sure where the pod is in all of the hangars, but it looks like this:

3) If you have 8GB of RAM, the hangar can be a huge memory hog right now.
What are your system specs? The game is unoptimized right now, but you still do need a fairly high-end machine to handle it decently.

I've diagnosed a far worse problem with your computer, it makes anime sounds.

If those cards are in SLI, disable SLI and try again.
Sweet, thank you for the tips elixwhitetail. I really appreciate it. The newtonian motion is definetly a change from the space sims (starlancer) that im used to. Im gonna apply to the fp corps when i get home. cant wait to fly with you guys.

Anime is haunting me everywhere, it's infesting everything i do with it's desire to melt my mind.
I try to resist but anime keeps taking over me.
Anyway, i posted a bug report for it.
Changing game to windowed mode fixes the issue, but i'd like to play fullscreen.

Maybe it's just 'cause I've filled my hangar with ships. Like, there's no spot that isn't taken.
About a dozen times a day, someone posts about having a poor framerate, especially in the hangar. Here's how to fix it for 90% of people. Please note that this assumes you have less than 16GB of RAM because I've never seen huge hangar framerate issues from anyone with 16GB or more. Basically it's a single tweak that will save everyone that has 8GB in their system.
This will also solve almost all "Memory Allocation Failed" errors.
Log in to your account on the RSI website. Go to your hangar settings and assign one ship. This will turn off loading all ships from free-fly week.
The hangar module currently uses up to 12GB of RAM. Yes I know the minimum specs say 8GB. There are two options:
Increase your windows pagefile size to 12000MB. Instructions on how to do this can be found here.
Add more RAM. This is the best option and will provide a better framerate increase than the above.
If you are still having issues, try lowering your resolution and setting your graphics preset lower.
Keep in mind that this game is in early alpha stages and has been designed on purpose to stress modern high-end gear. Do not expect the end result to run on your three year old laptop.
...
If you're concerned, /u/TheRealBeerai has said SC's tech support is also offering this solution.
Tropes vs Aliens in Gaming.
Visit my JumpNova to crowdfund Alien Agenda, my holo series on the issues and struggles non-humans face in the UEE today. I need 12 million credits to do a proper job, but I'll post it to the Spectrum in exactly one year, I promise.
