can I get suggestions from you nerds who know what guns are cool for a weapon loadout on the cutlass? the two suckerpunch things aren't exactly useful right now.
I'm not a fan of the 3-shot ballistic guns being on the gunner turret, way too hard to tell if I'm landing shots with those over my nose laser, and the limited ammo starts feeling the crunch pretty fast. Might just push those to the hard-mount in place of the suckers so I can manage ammo and wait to land shots on unshielded targets, and find something else to jam up on the turret
...checking the cutlass detail page, there's a discrepancy when viewing the default loadout in the holo viewer. The wings still show the suckerpunches (S1 instead of S2), there's no note of the nose gun (which was an S2 of some sort if I remember right), and the turret shows two NN-13 Neutron guns (also S1 instead of the S2 ballistics I have on the REC rented one). Can't get onto the game til later tonight but does anyone know if this is just like, the REC'd version of the ship comes loaded but the paid-for ship starts with a small generic setup? The max stats show [below], but again I'm pretty sure the turret guns were S2 when I checked it last

also the gun I paid REC for last week seems to have 2 days of time left, and is showing active time left in a current day slot. Haven't flown a ship with it attached since the first two nights, but it IS mounted to my 325a in the hangar so it is visually loading. I thought someone mentioned earlier it didn't seem to eat up a credit until you actually go into AC with it, miiiiight be wrong
Don't trust anything on the website for mounting information. That stuff is always out of date or just flat out wrong because it has no ties to the XMLs that define the actual ingame ships. It has to be updated by hand by a completely separate office that deals primarily in maintainting the website.
The ship you get with REC is the default loadout for the ship. As far as I know, it's not any different from the ship that the backers get.
I've always assumed that you use a token purely by logging in. That's been my experience.
On the topic of good guns, you can't go wrong with any of the Repeater series (CF-007, CF-117, CF-227). They're excellent all-rounders. If you want something harder hitting but with a lower rate of fire go with Omnisky VIs. I don't really use any projectile guns, but the Mantis seems like a safe bet if you don't mind going fixed. There's a few other guns I'd like to try the myself that aren't the "meta" guns, but REC gain was nerfed really fucking hard making it very difficult to justify screwing around like that. Also when outfitting your ship, be aware of the projectile speeds on the guns. Ideally you want all your guns to have the same muzzle velocity.
For missiles, Tempest II is objectively the best you can buy.
Here's a link to the spreadsheet with all the weapon stats pulled directly from the weapon XMLs. It's a great reference to keep handy, especially now that you need to do exceptionally well in like 4-6 games in order to afford a full set of guns for something.
be aware of the projectile speeds on the guns. Ideally you want all your guns to have the same muzzle velocity.
this is also a reason I don't like the ballistic weapons on the gunner turret, it currently gimbals with the nose gun, and the nose is a laser. I have to choose which of the two pips I want to shoot at when those two sets are both in the main firing group
also doing 'exceptionally well' in games to earn REC is pretty moot at the moment given nigh all of my attempts to get into proper online games either hard-freeze my whole computer or bounce me back to the lobby after waiting 5-8 minutes loading a match that it allegedly found
I haven't been able to play since Saturday morning before they "fixed it" and even then it was a total crapshoot where I spent most of the time Alt-tabbed reading Facepunch or whatever while the game constantly failed to load in varying ways.
seems the only games we've reliably started have been free roam, which is at least fun when you get 3+ people zipping around like idiots
For missiles, Tempest II is objectively the best you can buy.
is that because it's cross section lock?
I say the rattlers are worth it, if only because they're fucking badass cluster missiles
is that because it's cross section lock?

I just wish I could mount them on my Super Hornet, it'd be heaven.
FINALLY managed to play a few rounds of games, and the REC nerf is ridiculous for a testing environment and only really serves to provide a little earning friction to people who can afford to play all day every day
3 hours of watching super hornets run circles around everybody else, several disconnects, a freeze, and I'm only about 800 REC richer. boy howdy I can finally buy a temporary gimbal
what mode is the most lucritive right now? a 45 minute vanduul match granted barely 11 REC/minute, logging into the last 60 seconds on the 0-4 losing team of a capture the core game against a team wholly comprised of M50's earned 150, and it was clear they scored 4 instantly and spent the rest of the 20 minute limit just wasting the other team's time
racing would be if you could actually reliably get into races.

something has gone terribly wrong
the past two hours have been spent watching loading screens kick back to the lobby, with ONE successful join to a squadron battle where I was the only person who loaded in and it ran two frames per second til I quit the game entirely
seems to be common. so, the standing earnings is ~850REC over 5 hours. mmm

So tempted to get the Gladiator... I almost got the Vanguard; but it was too hard to justify.
The Gladiator looks badass; and seems to be priced decently...
No love for my poor Avenger though. :( Can't wait to see some of the Variants that are coming out for it...
Also, what's everyone's favourite missiles right now?
My Avenger had Marksman 1s, which are cool due to not having to be locked on; but never really seemed to hit or do a lot of damage... I'm currently renting the Clustermissile with mediocre results.
What would you recommend for an Avenger pilot?
hint: join the less frequented modes/maps. Until people catch on, then that mode will crash too, then find the even less played one.
the translucency hurts
also I'm definitely upgrading myself to a cutlass once my REC rental runs out. Not willing to spend anymore than that on the game, and it's more capable than my 300i in everything but speed. Not gonna race with it anytime soon but it can load up lots of cargo and unload lots of damage. Upgrading to the blue once persistent universe comes through would be awesome if bounty hunting has a good flow to it (also I hear you'll be able to remove the holding cells if you just want to haul cargo at times?). Being a nice hauler with heavy firepower and ridiculous maneuvering thrusters is some solid ground to start on, it's essentially the Milennium Falcon
also frat pirate idea from dalndox: get a cargo crate full of eggs and fling it out of the airlock into people's windows
[editline]e[/editline]
Pilot: new contact on the radar, it's a cutlass black. They're scanning our cargo hold, ma'am, they may be pirates
Captain: Open hailing frequency, we need to buy some time before they dig into the computer
*kssshht*
[surfer dude voice] oh... Hello miss cap-i-tan. This is the pirate ship 'Alpha Sigma Sigma' of the Syndicate Frat.
C: I assume you already found out for yourself, but our cargo hold's empty, we're an explorer group between missions. We don't want any trouble
[A.S.S. Pirate] Lower your shields and prepare to be boarded, we're not here to hurt anybody. Our only request is to plunder that booty
[dudebros cheering in the background]
[egg shipment drifts gently across the cockpit]
This and hijacking hella expensive ships and going on intergalactic joyrides with them.
"Sorry bruh. We needed some wings to get a shipment of booze for our party and next thing we knew we were two systems over and upside down on the landing pad."
Can you shoot missiles before they hit you?
Can you shoot missiles before they hit you?
Yes, I think. I've actually done it by accident.

Tempest IIs are the best missile in the game right now. They're accurate, very difficult to spoof, and do a lot of damage. They're what the Gladiator has stock and they're amazing.
It's kind of amazing we've reached the point that somebody can think $165 for literally nothing more than an internet space ship is "priced decently." I would say wait for one of the free fly weekends or rent it with REC if you want to try it, although it is true that CIG destroyed REC with the changes last patch. I would be surprised if they don't raise REC gain next patch because it's just completely ridiculous what it is now. I could rant for a while about how completely idiotic and counter-productive for everyone that decision was.
jono where are you I'm set to gold member in FPCorp

CIG's response to REC earnings in 1.1.1.
https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/comment/4827090/#Comment_4827090
Getting REC right is a matter of balancing; with 1.1, the system was generating too much REC... with 1.1.1, the early indication is that it's generating too little (we have more complex ways to measure/monitor this, but that's the word of mouth so far.) We will continue to change how it works until we have something that we're happy with: a level where it's both a challenge to earn new ships and weapons, but also rewarding enough that you keep playing. In short, it's the same thing you're seeing with every aspect of Arena Commander, from ship and weapon balance to the flight model to (gulp) controller sensitivity. The only constant in Arena Commander is that it's GOING to change. :)
I also want to stress that this isn't about money lost or gained. Certainly, a lot of sleazy social games traffic in the "just buy some gold to keep playing!" model, and we're always worried about that perception... but the vast majority of our crowd funding truly isn't coming from people stocking up on UEC or ship components (and to put a fine point on that thought, that's part of why we don't allow unlimited UEC purchases.) My new PC build, the only reason i'm really spending any money on it for SC is because this one runs it at 10 frames if i'm lucky :v:
Going to buy just the 290x and the PSU first to upgrade my current PC, and then get the rest of the stuff down the road and then put the PSU and 290x into that when I get it all.
Good thing I already have HDDs and RAM out the ass!
Oh woops, I might have to find a different PSU, the sale ended on this one.
I wish my computer could run star citizen, it looks so much better now.
I just realized how much I want this paint job for the cutlass

Clearly better suited for the Freelancer, but I support this.

So when do we get the space CIWS?
So when do we get the space CIWS?
I know that'll be a thing on the larger ships.
But heck imagine that, giving up an entire turret slot on a small ship for a rapid, weak, short range autoturret. Useless against ship shields but intercepts missiles and light armour boarders.
Would be cool if I could mount a CIWS on my Constellation. Wouldn't be all that unrealistic either since this thing had CIWS:

Would be cool to see more types of countermeasures than just chaff and flares. Stuff like DIRCM.
phoenix has ciws stock so it wouldnt be a stretch
I've been craving a submarine type class cap ship in this game, something to go deep behind the lines to recon or lay mines yet have enough torpedo firepower to hit a base or another cap ship. Doesn't need a ship bay, just a stealth design to fit about 15 to 30 sized crew.

the retaliator 'bomber' feels like a helluva sub if anything so far

not a MASSIVE crew ship, but I doubt anything short of capital is going to be in the 20+ crew range

Oh wow, I didn't even realize.

I'm just imagining a ship that looks dead on like a U-boat with all the classic submarine tropes, but in space.
