Star Citizen Megathread - Fly FREE thru Dec 14th! Link in OP

The Bugsmashers segment was really satisfying because there was a thread on the reddit panicking that it looked like CIG implementing some kind of auto-turret when to me it just looked like a bug that I've encountered in my own projects before.
I called it like it was and explained what the problem likely was, then one of the developers confirmed that I was right. That felt good.

damn the extended E is huge
I like how the smaller ones look like fat Liberty Patriots from Freelancer with trailers.

Those look freaking great. They make better sense than more classical sci-fi freighter designs where everything is just loosely dumped in the cargo hold because the future has no ISO 6346 equivalent.
Extending the spindles should actually improve maneuverability, contrary to the sale post.
Structural stability will likely be their reasoning.

I consider it an accomplishment that I resisted the urge to melt my Khartu-al so I could splurge for a Hull C. Goes on my in-the-PU list.

The A is so fucking adorable. It's a little too expensive for the bracket, but it definitely looks like a starter ship.

this post feels like im writing shitty clickbait for kotaku
what's the damage state and problems when damaged for the cargo latches?
A very good question.
The grabby hand stuff is pretty cool, however nothing revolutionary.

decent price considering it holds more cargo than a freelancer max
Hull C fold up animation.
Does that have, like, anything behind the cockpit? I'm pretty sure that the ship's spine should come crashing through the pilots seat unless it continues folding as its sliding forward.
I do like the designs, though. They're much more utilitarian, more like a real freighter or the freighters of X3. The Freelancer and Merchantman don't really strike me as being space truckers - too ornate and impractical.
The cargo design post is pretty neat. And I love how the hull series fold up
Was looking at the Hull series announcement and saw this at the end:
Owing to the ubiquity of the cargo pallet system, many manufacturers have created third party addons capable of taking advantage of the Hull superstructure. These range from additional ship upgrades (shield generators, sensor suites and the like) to ‘stealth’ cargo pods to gimbaled turrets and other weapons which can take the place of some cargo
So when are we going to start seeing battle barge setups for these things?

If you can have just the warheads deal the same explosive damage and less space, make a hull E into a kamikaze for large vandull cap ships in operation pitchfork.

I'm picturing Leviathan explosions in EV-Nova right now
Just imagine a Hull E laden with missiles doing something like this.

Actually this topic reminds me of a Humanity Fuck Yeah story that involved a cargo hauler carrying literally hundreds of thousands of missiles.
I've been trying the Cutlass today with REC. It basically took all of it so I can forget getting anything else for a very long time.
It's a very weird ship. Out of everything in the game, it's definitely the one most affected by boost. All the other ships when boosted won't actually tell the IFCS to rotate the ship faster, but in the Cutlass it raises the rotation limit by at least 2 times.
You get this weird flying style where you boost to start a turn then either boost at the end to counter the turn or just coast the rest of the way while theoretically tracking a target. Very weird. You definitely have to fly it different from how you might fly anything else in the game.
The Cutlass is a huge target so anybody using projectile weapons, which go through shields, will tear you a new one. It also has a damage model so complicated that it will bring everybody’s game to a halt anytime something happens to it. It causes performance problems for everyone.
I also tried super hard today again to make joystick useful but still no luck. Mouse is better by miles because of the accuracy afforded with gimbals. I'm wondering now if pedals would help, because the X-55 having no good way to control strafe is a big part of the problem I think. The X-52 was much more suitable to a space sim because it had a big hat switch on your index finger, which left your thumb free to manipulate the rest of the buttons on the throttle face. The X-55 has no such analogue so strafing with it in a space sim feels super bad no matter what you do.
the thing that affects the cutlass's turn/rotation is the engine pods at the back being able to rotate 360, plus the medium engine pods strapped to the side of the cargo bay having full range of freedom.
Definitely ridiculous maneuverability, though feels super slow for how massive its engines are. Plus people miss the fact you can pull the ridiculous twists and turns because they're trying to fly it like other ships. I see a lot of commentary around youtube and the RSI forum that the cutlass allegedly turns slow but the little boosts to kick yourself into a turn make a world of difference, and feel so satisfying.
That method with the boost assisting DOES work on other ships, but I've noticed minor problems with some, notably the Avenger, where the stabilizing second boost will destabilize you more sometimes with some funky rocking forward
also earlier today I managed to magboot onto the rotating part of the terraformer on broken moon and I went flying
Something else interesting I noticed with the Cutlass that I didn't know before, is that most of its thrusters are actually fixed. The only ones that seem to rotate are the two slapped on side ones (those things are so ugly) and the main engines.
Overall cool design though.

I agree; what I meant was, it looks like a starter ship, if a little larger than an Aurora or Mustang, but $60 is a little expensive for a "starter ship" designation.
So, do we have any Hull D or E owners? Trying to gauge what FPCorp's biggest one is so we can crash it into something smaller than itself on day 1 of it being flyable in AC. Those cargo containers are gonna go everywhere. Hopefully we can fulfill Jono's dream and have them filled with heavy explosives that detonate on impact once freed from the Hull's cargo arrays.
The heavier ships are drifty when cornering, even with boost, but the Cutlass is the only ship that's drifty about its own boosted maneuvering thrusters.

I'll most likely own one of the two in the next couple of days when I find the time.

Not like I haven't told you that already. :v:
You gotta get the Hull E, man.
You gotta get the Hull E, man.
The page is literally stating that unless you have a whole fleet to escort it it's basically an ENORMOUS target for everyone that wants booty.
You can't hide all those dragon dildos, not with a ship of that size.
Is it not bothering anyone else how payment centered everything in this game is at this point?
People keep talking about prices of ships as if you are actually paying to win.
It's difficult for me to believe all this is just to support game by funding, and that it will have no significancy in real game.
I'm pretty sure the amount of money they are getting by selling these pixels might make them change plans and let people buy stuff with real money even when game is out of beta. Which i was hoping wouldn't happen.
My biggest concern is why are they adding even more ships for people to buy with real money, like those Hull variations. I thought we were supposed to buy them in-game and only everything we do now is fundraising with rewards.
I still hope i won't regret buying this game. Even if it was only like 40e i spent, i spent it to buy a game, not a ship in p2w universe.
I was extremely hyped for everything related to Star Citizen, but i'm getting concerned about how things are.
[editline]26th April 2015[/editline]
And before people start throwing stones and pointing fingers at me, i repeat, i'm really looking forward for this to be a great success. I'm just worried how this all looks right now.
I dislike it for the same exact reasons you mention but if it weren't for them being so good at getting people to buy rendered pictures of CG spaceships this game wouldn't have a tenth of its funding.
I'm sure elix can write a gigantic post about how it really is all pointless to be buying the ships, and despite his fanboyish nature, he would still be right. There is seriously no good reason to ever buy anything for this game other than the cheapest ship. At best you get a day one headstart, and to be fair it's unknown how much that'll be worth, but considering the nature of the game I don't think that'll amount to much. Honestly I find it baffling that people throw down the money they do with nothing to show for it other than a picture of an internet spaceship on an online account, but to each his own.
The only unknown is if plans change when the game comes out in 4 years. We can tell you what's planned and reassure that it's going to be okay but it's not like plans haven't already changed for a great many things. Things like what happened with REC set a worrying precedent if you choose to interpret it that way.
As for why they're adding more ships, it's because the game needs more ships to fill out the roster and make for a more believable universe. In old Freelancer parlance, these ships are the equivalent of the Trains and Transports. With only a few exceptions, all the ships in the game are flyable by players as much as NPCs so why not put them on sale for the people with loose wallets? The ships were going to get made either way.

I think it's important to remain skeptical and challenge CIG. To an outside observer the whole project is way too easy to criticize with the concerns you mention, and deservedly so. CIG is walking a very fine line with how they are handling this game. They get away with a lot of things that no other company could even try without immense backlash from the greater gaming community, and the defense from the fans usually ends up sounding like, "It's okay when CIG does it."
