maybe the idea with the mustang design was to be really good at pitching downwards in turn fights. so good you cant not do it.
The Vanduul Scythe is the only ship where "designing a ship to pitch down" make remotely any sense because of its silly laying forwards position and very good downwards visibility. [editline]9th May 2015[/editline]
Who's up for some co-op VS in about an hour? Me and Jono are interested, but he's got to patch first. P.S. if you're interested but need to patch, get started.
I'm actually playing right now, although I've been staying offline because the rubberbanding and lag is awful. I don't know what you guys do to organize games but I can join in.
I haven't played online, but I've heard that it's bad, so we might not have much fun tonight. I'm practicing a bit in solo VS/racing while Jono patches. We generally use Teamspeak (prfn.se, Star Citizen Space Punchers channel) to organize matches.
This stuff bugs the crap out of me in SC. We have these fanciful ship designs that don't make much sense in reality - which is fine, normally - but they're paired to realistic physics, so silly band-aids have to be slapped onto them to make them controllable. Like the Mustang and its stupid engine layout. It must continuously thrust upwards to counteract the moment generated by the wildly off-center engines.
They do this kind of thing and it makes me question the point of fully simulating the physics and flight dynamics that they clearly pitched in the kickstarter.
ah so that's how the rest of the recharge station looks like. I found this animation a while ago [t]http://3kv.in/~techbot/ShareX/2015/05/s.gif[/t]
enjoy
They do this kind of thing and it makes me question the point of fully simulating the physics and flight dynamics that they clearly pitched in the kickstarter.
Engineers are artists but not all artists are engineers. They just need to have a mechanical engineer be responsible for ensuring acceptable levels of retardation in their designs.
I hope that Hyper Vanguard Force will be playable ingame. It would be fun to walk up to a arcade hall and play it or in arena commander.
I imagine it'll get done eventually. Some programmer just needs to find an empty day in their schedule, and by all rights no coders should have empty days (not counting weekends/etc.) before SQ42 and the PU alpha come out. :v: I'm stuck on mission 3 hyperpink. I want that apex predator badge, but the damn swarm of Cutlasses at the halfway point gets me or at least wrecks me so bad I'm one hit away from death.
looked back at some old design posts and found this M50 armed to the teeth with some S7's [t]https://robertsspaceindustries.com/media/dv9x6o6y5xidwr/source/Designweapons-Wildm50.png[/t] [t]https://robertsspaceindustries.com/media/gw84doa8mwsuir/source/Designweapons-Theusualsuspects.png[/t] also check them S10 neutrons

Expect updates on that throughout the week. Other than that, the S42 shoot continues in the UK, the FPS development continues in CO, and studios around the world continue building this game. Also worth noting, ATV this week will be hosted solo by our own Ben Lesnick. Let's see what the over/under on bad puns are this episode with no one else to subject them to. Monday, May 11th - 10 for the Designers - Starfarer Q&A Post #1 Tuesday, May 12th - Meet the Devs: Pete Mackay Wednesday, May 13th - Vault Update - Starfarer Q&A Post #2 Thursday, May 14th - Around the Verse: Episode 44 Friday, May 15th - Reverse the Verse - Starfarer Q&A Post #3 - Jump Point: Issue 3-05 (Subscribers Only) - Free Fly Week Begins: Starter Ships (All Auroras and All Mustangs)
So, correction, Jump Point comes out on the third Friday of the month.
The comments they make at 08:40 are promising. It seems like they're going forwards with Pritchett's idea of a combat speed rather than an arbitrarily coded and artificial feeling top speed. They say they're working a lot right now on the handling of ships, which is encouraging.

Can someone give me a rundown of what's happened since January? Is the game playable yet?
Can someone give me a rundown of what's happened since January? Is the game playable yet?
You never bothered to look one bit into anything related to Star Citizen, did you?
I watched a few of the videos that came out on the channel, but none really gave me a sense of the progress they've made. And I'm not really in a position to download 5 months of 20 gig patches.
You'd only have to download one set of patches. Really, for you, you might as well uninstall and install a fresh copy of the game, which now clocks in at 25GB. Or you could read back several pages of this thread, since people, including me, often summarize/highlight news/postings, with links. At the moment, AC has some mean rubberbanding and lag problems in multiplayer. Also, there's a bug where if you desync from the lag your own helmet can instakill you. The symptoms of this are, nobody is shooting at you, and then suddenly you die without warning. There are still performance issues, but the problem sources are different. Loading times are greatly improved, but still shittier than desired. Sledge IIs are still wildly OP and CIG is trying to figure out what to do to bring their power in line with the rest of the weapons without watering it down too far. A new-pilot tutorial mode was added, and it's fairly slick while also showing little hints at the work CIG's been doing on SQ42/PU stuff. It's also the first time a public patch has let you climb into a ship and fly it out of the asteroid hangar. The next patch is intended to be the fps module drop, at last. Expect the usual rough ride at first, since it'll be the initial public implementation. SQ42 cinematic mocap shooting is underway right now at Imaginarium in London -- the mocap place Star Wars is using. Chris is on-site directing for a few months, and Sandi's recently gone over for a few weeks.
the subscription concept art vault is paying off already
Sledge's are fine. I haven't seen anybody even mounting Sledge II's for a very long time. Spamming Tempest IIs with the Gladiator or Gladius is the new meta.
Sledge IIs are still wildly OP and CIG is trying to figure out what to do to bring their power in line with the rest of the weapons without watering it down too far.
Did they get buffed again? the first nerf nerfed them so hard they became useless, a dual ROF and damage nerf. I havent been playing much MP this version due to the lag, focusing on racing for now. Tarantulas have the same art, similar sound, and pack a punch but are low speed and quite balanced from what ive seen. Strong weps but not overpowered. maybe you mistook sledges for them?
The first nerf on Sledges was RoF and heat, not damage, if I recall correctly, and after it was adjusted people were still able to get one-shotted by x6 Sledge SHs. Sure, after 2-3 shots the SH's Sledges are overheated, but it's taken down a ship or two. I don't use Sledges myself so I can only repeat what I've heard, but it was mentioned on a recent CIG "let's fill content by talking to a dev" video that specifically Sledge IIs are still basically big DPS with no drawbacks, and they're trying to figure out how to balance them without making them pointless. Maybe they were confusing Sledges and Tarantulas, who knows, but it seems odd that an edited video would go out as an official release with such an obvious error and have no correction followup (I would've seen it go by in the devtracker) in the week afterwards. If a CIG dev makes a baffling statement that's out of touch with reality, backers usually call them on it. Random discussion from Reddit (for what it's worth) about the OPness of Sledges when you take total missile spam out of consideration. And, yes, Tempest IIs are the new favourite, because after signatures came in, it hasn't actually stopped being Missile Commander, and Sledge fire doesn't home in on ships on its own. But, as always, the balance isn't final and CIG continues to adjust. A minor patch, 1.1.3, is live.
The 1.1.3 patch significantly addresses the rubber banding associated with the Cutlass which will give everyone playing AC a better experience. We've also thrown in an assorted list of bug fixes that will aid the Tutorial, as well as add the June flair items have also been added to the build.
There will also be a PTU 1.1.2 stress test tomorrow (if you already have the PTU installed the patch will be ~20MB) at 8pm GMT, which is:
1pm PDT (Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver) 2pm MDT (Albuquerque, Denver, Calgary) 3pm CDT (Mexico City, Austin, Dallas, Chicago) 4pm EDT (Miami, Washington, New York) 9pm BST (Dublin, London, Edinburgh) 10pm SAST/CET (Johannesburg, Paris, Berlin) 11pm EEST/MST (Kiev, Moscow, Istanbul) 5am JST/KST (Seoul, Tokyo) 6am AST (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane) 7am NZST (Auckland, Wellington)
The stress test is in order to gather data on game performance "down to the microsecond" in 6v6/8v8 squadron battles. The three test runs are a round of 6v6 SB with physics in the main thread, a round of 6v6 SB with multithreaded physics, and an 8v8 SB with multithreaded physics.
Players will need to re-copy their account over to PTU. There will be a small incremental patch less than 20MB (that's right... just twenty megabytes!). Both the patch and PTU are up right now, and players can copy their account over and start patching immediately. We'll be dropping and restarting servers after each round to make game rule config changes, so we're asking that participants join the PTU Chat Channel during the test period at https://robertsspaceindustries.com/community/chat.
Protip, don't use the web interface they're running, use an XMPP client instead, it won't be laggy as shit.
What To Expect: A lot of fun helping us create data and metrics that we need! What it's like to be a QA tester. What it's like to shoot down a QA tester. A small 20MB patch. The same 1.1.2 performance we've been seeing, plus an additional spike or two during the 8v8 battles.
Bugsmashers is MIA this week, but I'm sure Mark was busy enough. Originally in the ptu version they only got a rof and heat nerf, on release of the live version a huge damage nerf was added on top of that. They have not changed since and are now pretty underpowered. I think i saw the video you mentioned, they were speaking in terms of past tense about how the sledge was and how they learned not to balance that way or something.
Me and Elix are gonna be playing some AC. We'll be sitting on TS3 before that so if you wanna join in just get on ts3.prfn.se (or just prfn.se) Probably gonna be playing one or two hours or so from this post I guess.
I captured some footage with Jono, mostly racing with lots of crashes (mostly me). It'll take a while to pull the highlights reel together. I could make a supercut of me crashing of surprising length, too. Recorded some solo footage, and this was the easiest to edit and post first:
using those strafe thrusters a little too strongly at points, but that's why I like the mustang for the harder, curvier courses. Old vanderval I've got the M50 dancing through like nobody's business

According to Ship Shape, the Reliant is a mini-hauler, so here's our all-rounder hauler with multicrew (the MISC A is a single-crew dedicated cargo tug). Auroras better be able to be souped up pretty good in the PU with aftermarket parts, because these things are looking more and more like Mom's Sedanship all the time. I'm still holding onto my LX, however. Someone on Reddit claimed to have had a recent visit to CIG Santa Monica, and although they promised not to reveal details about what they saw behind the scenes, they said they got to see the Reliant and that "a lot of Auroras are going to die" tomorrow. Except I'm not so sure about that since the concept sale is only for the standalone ship and not a package. There's a forum thread for Reliant questions, since they'll be doing Q&A posts for it next week like the Hull and Starfarer ones. Naturally the first post is some dumbfuck asking for Ben to confirm once again that the Reliant isn't some surprise freak exception from the CCU system so they can get their LTI'd whatever by turning a Reliant into it.

Can you confirm that the Time to Kill will be slower in the future?
As soon as physical-based damage is applied to ships (hopefully not too far off), yes the time to kill will increase considerably.
Interesting...

The Reliant sale started shockingly early -- it was online by 9:30am CIG LA time along with the corresponding concept sale post. [t]https://robertsspaceindustries.com/media/jjs1n85qx4u7br/source/Reliant_LandingInsitu_Final_Hobbins.png[/t] [t]https://robertsspaceindustries.com/media/8jxp7uctq2s6yr/source/Reliant_CockpitFunction_Final_Hobbins.png[/t] [t]https://robertsspaceindustries.com/media/ulg6vwv8zm62kr/source/Reliant_SpaceChaseInsitu_Updated_Final_Hobbins.png[/t] [sp]That's no moon![/sp] I'm excited by the variants, too:
"Researcher" - A science-oriented model that carries internal signal dampeners and an advanced scanner suite for discovery missions. "News Van" - Designed for deep space broadcasting, the 'News Van' Reliant adds an Image Enhancement Suite that helps capture every moment of lfe in the stars. "Skirmisher" - The frontier combat version of the Reliant trades cargo for a high-yield powerplant, stronger shields and additional weapons mounts.
Also, the post mentions their plans for handling LTI on variants, after the Starfarer Gemini raised concerns.
We are announcing that these ships are in the works today because we know that many backers are concerned about having LTI on their ships. With feedback from the Starfarer Gemini sale, we're going to establish ongoing rules for variants in advance. Going forward, the policy is that if we announce variants in advance (which we will try to do when possible) they will not be made available with LTI on release and instead CCUs will be available. If an additional variant were added beyond those listed during the base concept sale, it would be considered for a possible LTI concept sale.
Seems fair enough. I've got mine, although I don't think I'll be using it for a hauler with my Hull B around, unless I need to go risky places alone (or with one crewmate). I'll wait to see when the variants come out, but I might end up turning it into an exploration ship, or possibly the "news van" variant if there's compelling gameplay for that role. I'm hoping that the "nonstandard" ship roles like the news van Reliant have compelling gameplay, because if CIG manages to deliver on all of the different occupational activities they've promised, damn, this blows everything else out of the water. It's too early to give CIG the trophy because they still haven't even finished the game yet, so it remains to be seen if they deliver on their promises, but I'm confident that SC is going to set a new high bar that other games are going to struggle to reach for a while, both in terms of visual fidelity and also in comprehensiveness and breadth of scope. I think SC will qualify as establishing the "next gen" of games. Oh, and notes from RtV: - If you pick up a concept Reliant now, you will be able to add the package later. (Predictably, Twitch chat was spamming this question throughout the last half of the stream.) - The Reliant's handling changes when it switches to vertical mode, making it yaw/roll heavy instead of pitch/yaw heavy. - Someone was unclear on the whole "concept" process and asked "Please tell me the Reliant is almost hangar ready!" - An unspecified ship will be hangar-ready soon; Twitch chat thought it's the Herald. - The Reliant has two S1 hardpoints on the wings; the turret mount, which in the concepts carries a twin-linked turret, is actually a S3 hardpoint that will come with a S2 tractor beam when the ship is initially flight-ready; the turret will be an optional piece. - Lisa's Ship Shape segment on AtV will feature the Freelancer rework-in-progress in the next few weeks - There's one unnamed smaller ship they're trying to get working before they tackle the larger ships; the suspicion is again the Herald. - Lisa wants the Drake Dragonfly to be next, and CIG is considering sending the Dragonfly out to an outsourced concept artist. Reminder, this is the space wingsuit motorcycle ship, and it's what CR liked best out of the Wave 4 third-starter-ship poll. - The Reliant doesn't have interior living quarters (or even a toilet) like the Mustang Beta does, but there is interior walking space (accessible from the cockpit only when the ship's in horizontal mode); one of the variants could have a fold-out bed or something - Chat gets punny over pronouncing "Xi'An" like "jean". "Captain Xi'An-Luc Picard" and "Xi'An Claude Vanduul" slayed the CIG community team
I picked one one to go with my Avenger. :| $50 was just too good of a deal to pass up on a functional, transforming, 2-seater Snubfighter with a loading ramp. Easily one of my favourite-looking ships right now.
