The Scythe's blade is stupid as fuck, at least on the ship it's mounted on. You take one swipe with that blade, the blade is gonna jam and your ship is going to either snap off, or the arm is gonna bend and whip your cockpit straight into the rest of the target ship if it is big enough. A Vanduul gunboat similar in size to a Constellation or Retaliator with a ramming prow would be pretty entertaining, though. Put a door on it the prow and use it to ram ships and subsequently board them. It would also look slightly less dumb.
They have something like that, I thought there was a ship that has a spiked tube for boarding.

Welp, I bought the Merlin... Kinda wish it came with LTI; but I understand why it does not. I like these cheap, cool little ships. So far I have the Avenger LTI, the Reliant LTI and now a Merlin.

Gotta have your power prow like in the Rogue Trader books.

The new version (2.3.1) of the launcher now properly downloads 1.1.5d (it was downloading the initial 1.1.5 release instead of the latest hotfixed build). There's going to be a 1.1.6 PTU stress test to push the Generic Instance Manager to new limits to see what breaks and what holds together on Sunday, time and timezone conversions in link. [t]https://i.imgur.com/54MKuBc.jpg[/t] Highlights from today's RtV (now with new camera angle, pictured): - Gamescom tickets are printable, for attendees, in case any FPer's going - July monthly report will come out Friday the 7th - same day as Gamescom - Scheduled start of Gamescom stream will be 11am PST, 2PM EST, 7PM UTC, 8PM in Germany - I say scheduled because expect the presentation to not start on time as always - A detailed post will go up later today about Gamescom covering everything, including what limited ships will be for sale during the event - During testing of the Gamescom demo, Lando saw two ships enter Q-Drive and come out of it at the exact same coordinates at the exact same time, and it was basically a transporter accident, superimposed ships in 3D space, arms and legs everywere :v: - James plans to update the ship status page (where each ship is in the pipeline, etc.) every two months - They're working on tweaking the ship pipeline to get earlier ships out faster (than currently planned aka snoresville). Foundry 42 will be working on ships like the Cat (paging dai), more info to come after Gamescom. - No AtV/RtV this next week, they'll be too busy with Gamescom. - Gamescom public freefly week promo code confirmed, people screwed out of like 4 days of the Quakecon freefly period because of the loaner Hornet black-loading-screen bug get another chance - Cutlass is now totally modular, expect to see forward movement soon; in response to criticisms that the Cutlass has been changed away from what it was pitched as, Ben reads the original description of the Cutlass: TL;DW it's an interceptor that cracks open transports and takes their stuff--it's basically the Galaxy from Privateer remade, and the Cutlass as flyable is exactly as described (with ongoing development because we're in pre-multicrew alpha, obviously) - The Endeavour will have science pods, one of which is intended to collect specimens (such as marine life). Hope-class variant probably not ready for sale when concept sale comes, they're working on the science pod modules first. - Role distinction: The Carrack is the frontier explorer discovering new things and bringing back data, the Endeavour is the big floating research station that does stuff with the weird shit the Carrack brings back home - Grabby hands not ready for fps launch, still undergoing lots of work by Calix - RtV chat's new running joke is space whales. Response: "Tell CR you want space whales." When asked if space whales can use Jump Points, Ben says that if space whales were theoretically added to SC, they may have some form of jump-fart ability - The Starfarer toilet paper situation was taken seriously by CIG and it'll be addressed in the next pass (of the 'farer's interior, I assume) - Now the plan is to ship fps with Gold Horizon first, and then push the Sataball map/gamemode out in a following patch -- presumably because the zero-g animations are way more important in Sataball so they can half-ass it for now and get Star Marine live sooner - The Vanguard's escape pod is pretty nuts; it's very heavily armoured and it has tech built in to ghost that the whole ship blew up (and mask itself), but it can be destroyed in a worst-case. The Vanguard's being built to hit like a train and tank like one. Vanguard "probably not flyable" before end of the year, unsurprisingly. - Ship timeline (for at least the end of the year) should be posted "later", no clarification of when that is, obviously not before Gamescom - New weapons/items being held back to finish the physically-based damage system and get components done - Dave Hobbins is working on Reliant variants, no CIG won't show us until they're done - Xi'An Scout is close, but Gamescom took priority; afterwards, Foundry 42 will be back to work on it
Does the new launcher finally unlock the lost dark art of delta patching?
No, but it unlocks using as much bandwidth as you have. May not be a particular issue in , but someone posted a screenshot to Reddit of pulling down the PTU at 72MB/s. Also, the new launcher will attempt a new install. It won't care about the old installer. Rename your old SC folder, start the install, then pause it, close the launcher, and move your old data files (don't overwrite the launcher!) into the new folder to save redownloading all 25GB.
Question. Has work on multi-crew ship functionality been going ahead while they've been working on FPS blockers?
Question. Has work on multi-crew ship functionality been going ahead while they've been working on FPS blockers?
I imagine a lot of the FPS blockers are also blockers for multi-crew ships, right?
Question. Has work on multi-crew ship functionality been going ahead while they've been working on FPS blockers?
Local physics grids and large worlds are online in internal builds. While Illfonic has been wanking and making the fps transition animations (jukes etc.) meet CR's standards and the netcode's finally being unfucked, engine work on AC2.0 features has been going full-steam and the Retaliator is flight-ready pending multicrew actually being released. Freelancer and Connie Andromeda redesigns hoping to be finished and flight-ready with or ASAP after multicrew patch (Andromeda first, variants to follow, no word on Freelancer variants timing). CR let slip at SDCC that the Gamescom presentation will include a multicrew demo where multiple people board a Cutlass and fly from a hangar into space near a gas giant that is, at scale, larger than Jupiter. Flying between the two moons in orbit around the gas giant takes 2.5 hours in a 350R at top dogfight-safe speeds. Quantum Drive is probably also going to be shown off in the same demo in order to get around such huge spaces--see Lando's tale of the Q-Drive accident that turned two ships into The Fly.

I don't care if you make star systems smaller than actual size, just keep planets at realistic scale. If they do just this, and that little preview was a sign of things to come, it'll make me incredibly happy. One thing seriously confuses me, though. If flying from the Earth to the Moon at Arena Commander speeds (350m/s) will actually take 12 days (do the math, it does) how can flying between moons in orbit around a gas giant at Arena Commander speeds take a mere 2.5 hours? This worries me. Either they've lied about the scale, or they've miscalculated. Or I miscalculated. This look right to you? 384,400,000m (approximate distance between the earth and moon) divided by 350, for the 350m/s velocity. Take the answer and divide that by 60 twice, to get a number in hours, and divide it once more by 24. The answer is 12.71 rounded down - Almost 13 days.

Presumably they'll be both in the visible field from the vantage point the demo shows them off for the first time from. The point of talking about how long it takes to fly between the two locations at sub-warp speeds is that large world hype will be proven real. It's also likely 1:10-scale, but honestly, the gas giant is something like 175,000km wide. Are you gonna tell me a 17,500km-wide gas giant isn't going to impress you when, up until now, Arena Commander maps haven't been any larger than 20km cubes? :v: I'm trying to contain my hype, but I fear that I am going to be almost unbearable if CIG pulls out everything they've promised to have for Gamescom. Recap: - Squadron 42 announcement of some kind (I'm guessing the release date, but they may have a non-spoiler demo to show) - Above-mentioned multicrew demo - Presumably something for fps to show it off - MAYBE the big official HOTAS reveal Gamescom event details posted. Digital event items (Cologne 2945 poster and Gamescom 2945 trophy) will be available in the store for people who can't attend. Subscribers automatically get a special variant of the event trophy. Concierge and Subscribers attending the event will be able to purchase the following limited ships directly from RSI staff, and receive a physical "ship registration" certificate to frame at home: Retaliator, Carrack, Caterpillar, Orion, Reclaimer, Khartu-al, Banu MM. They're also going on-sale on the site during the event -- I'm not sure if that's Subs/Concierge only or an event sale for the general public. Or worse, less. Kerbal Space Program was at 1/10 scale. I'm really praying Star Citizen doesn't make their planets THAT small, that'd be disgusting.
We already had this discussion, but I'm hoping they condense the scale down because bigger systems doesn't imply more content, it just means you have more empty space and nothing. Elite Dangerous with its 1:1 scale provides a good example of why I don't think realistic scales matter or really contribute anything useful beyond the initial "neat factor" that wears off quick once you realize its impacts on the game. If anything, I would say they should be discouraged for the sake of game design. But we'll see how it looks at Gamescom.

But we'll see how it looks at Gamescom.
The main reason I've always been in favour of realistic scale is because I feel that space sims should strive to convey one thing above all else - And that is the sheer mindfuck that is the actual scale of the cosmos - Humans have zero frame of reference here on earth for anything approaching the scale of planets as viewed from space, and games like Elite manage to really drive it home. Cruising around at sub-warp speeds, whether you're in a dogfight or simply coming in to dock at an orbital station, you get a glimpse of some alien world slowly rotating below you and a part of your brain just gives up trying to gauge it, turns it into a piece of the stellar background, because it's impossible for our brains to comprehend how something so solid and so vast should fit into our spatial awareness. And the longer you stare, the more awestruck you are by the sheer majesty that scale conveys. That's not something Freelancer can do. That's not something Kerbal Space Program can do, though it comes close. I guess in my mind, the idea of 'space' is inseparable from scale, and it feels like a cop-out to sell it short.
