Looking from an objective point of view, this would've been welcomed with open arms if PA had a much smoother launch.

Those nanobot swarms do look pretty cool though; they remind me of necron scarab swarms from warhammer 40k
why isn't Titans even available through Uber's official store? https://store.uberent.com/Store/PreOrder?titleId=4
bought the original during beta through Uber's client, don't have a Steam version so I can't get the discounted version even if I wanted to

It was a nice idea, considering there is supposed to be the same level of content in Titans as there was with Supcoms:FA.
But as with everything Uber does it has the best of intentions but an execution that is subtly flawed that it causes a myriad of unforeseen issues.
There are cases of backers from the KS then upgrading their pledge who can't get Titans for free due to errors and such.
I don't know how I feel about this. on one hand, it's incredibly retarded to split off a second game so they can cheat the system and get a fresh start on reviews and stuff
but on the other hand, with the steam discount it's functionally the same as a $15 non-standalone expansion, which is probably a fair price for the content

like i said PA was released on steam far too early, and the reviews reflect a shitty game which isn't the current version of PA
Somebody's started a petiotion for Uber to give the expansion free to everybody who owned PA beforehand: https://www.change.org/p/uber-entertainment-planetary-annihilation-titans-stop-making-us-pay-for-what-we-already-paid-for
They MUST give it for free or shit will fly too high.
Even I can't pass this blatant kick on my balls, being really forgiving normally.
Well it seems that the general consensus of Titans is that it really makes the game what it should've been...apparently one of the new super weapons drills a hole into the core of the planet you build it on and blows it up.
I think the pricepoint is the biggest issue here. If it was something like, I don't know, 15 pound for the full thing, previous owners pay 7 pounds for it I think it'd be a lot fairer.
I mean, completely different genre and game, but Endless Legend has a DLC that does a lot of what Titans does. Adds new mega units, adds new gameplay systems (game events and deeds) and adds a bunch of new buildings as well. All for seven pound.
If they had also done what the Endless Legend devs do, and make it so people who own the Titans expansion can host games where people who don't own it can play with the units and try them out, I'd probably feel a lot better about this.
This honestly feels like a bit of an act of desperation. Like their company is circling the drain.
I mean, don't get me wrong I feel for them. But I think they could have gotten the same effect they want (new name, new reviews etc) if they had just given it to all previous owners for free, added all this content in for free. Hell, maybe AFTER they did that announce a kickstarter for a new game, because I don't think many people could begrudge them doing a kickstarter after hypothetically releasing the Titans content for free.
here's why I don't like bitching about the price
it is discounted for everyone that got it in early access, and you have until October to buy titans at that discount
you need to put aside 23 cents a day if you waited until the very last day
Don't upgrade your McDonalds to large and you'll get there in like a month

except it wouldn't have been a new store page
PA original had too much negative press surrounding it to be viable to save their company

I'm fairly certain their company is close to bankrupt.
Having followed the development of the game it was very obvious when they ran out of money. They launched into EA much earlier than they wanted because they had used up their KS funds (developing games is expensive, who'd have thought?). They had the choice between pissing of backers (making the EA version cheaper than the equivalent reward tier from their KS) and pissing of non-backers (making the EA version cost $90). They decided to not piss off their backers.
A few months later the sales of the EA version slowed down and they ran out of money again. I'm 99% sure they realized that a lot of features they promised were still missing (like offline mode), but they probably couldn't afford paying their own developers anymore so they had to fix what they could and release """1.0""".
That apparently got them reasonable sales again and they could afford paying some of their developers again. They got right on adding the features they promised in the Kickstarter (like offline mode, the unit cannon, water worlds, etc...), but the community was already pretty pissed about them releasing 1.0 without these features.
At the same time they had to reduce the number of developers in the PA team because most of the work was done (adding a few units and offline mode is not comparable to building the whole game from scratch) and in order to keep these developers they had to find a new project for them. That's how the Human Resources KS was born. As we all know the Kickstarter failed and they had to let a bunch of employees go, but continued working on the missing features to actually deliver what they promised in the KS.
A few weeks ago Jon Mavor addressed the community and basically told them that he considers the game to be in a state where they delivered what the promised in the Kickstarter. In the background they secretly worked on PA: Titans, but sales were slowing down again (http://steamspy.com/app/233250) and they knew they couldn't afford continued development much further. So they decided to sell the expansion as a new game to 1. get some more money and 2. get rid of all the review left from the botched """1.0""" launch.

They've shown they can gift a game straight to Kickstarter backers - wouldn't take that much more to extend it to everyone who's purchased the game. Easier, probably.

If they would do that. The first thing what I would do is to give them Negative review.
Doesn't matter how game plays. They do not deserve to be a "Developer" anymore.
Look what happen to MNC , SMNC and PA. Devs has no clue how to fix situation but instead they create a new situation where they go free.
I have already reported this to Valve, no matter if they can't or won't do anything. I mean, how can people complain about paid mods but support THIS? Is the fucking same game with some new stuff. It is literally THIS:

i just cant not feel pissed about it because theres absolutely no reason not to have the discount permanent. look at scholar of the first sin, permanent upgrade discount if you already owned dark souls 2. what the hell kinda reason could they have for not making it permanent? and i dont wanna buy titans, or give them anymore of my money anytime soon with how they think they should treat their customers (that and i just bought MGSV, and i have way more interest in buying mad max, trine 3 and other games than i do titans right now. maybe i would buy titans in the future if the discount were to be permanent, but since it isnt i guess they dont want my money?) whos to say i wont get screwed over again for buying titans?

JESUS H CHRIST
there is so much fucking precedent for this style of release it's not even fucking funny
dawn of war 1 and 2
company of heroes
total annihilation itself
and no it's not even close to the same game
balance is different, UI is way better than i remember, it's actually fun

i currently don't have PA without titans
but i'm pretty sure there's a big notification telling you "yo titans our new standalone expansion is out, you get it for cheaper since you own it already"
re: your bolded part
cause businesses are in the business of making money? and PA was not received well at exiting early access, and those reviews are affecting their bottom line (and ability to make free updates)
at some point they had to charge for something.
if they released it as DLC, people would complain about the DLC, and PA still wouldn't have gotten away from the shitty reviews
this was their best option. i'm sure they weighed all their choices and saw this one was the least negative one

I like when people aprove bad practice because "it has been before".
And yeah, it is the same fucking game, a patch ahead of PA.
the work they put into titans is not worth 13 bucks i feel
considering it's a brand new release
at some point they have to get their 40 bucks out of it
dow's expansions were more or less the same price (and there were more of them)

this is literally how RTSs have been released for god knows how long
wow you're telling me that blizzard is letting you preorder legacy of the void, a standalone release of starcraft 2???
how much is it???

wow omg heart of the swarm was the same price on launch too, what a concept
i cant support them wanting to get away from bad reviews either, it may not have reflected their current game but it shows that in the past the game was missing a hell of a lot and the devs were kinda incompetent. hell arent a lot of the most helpful reviews recent too? the last 10-12 months or so?

except the game has changed a bunch in the past 12 months
the problem is those people never gave it another shot
lets say the division comes out and people are like "meh, it's not great", but the devs work hard to fix it and make it better (and by people who are actually playing it, titans is a significant improvement over what was available 2 days ago)
would it be fair to treat those reviews as an accurate representation of the product as it exists today
I do hate that mentality in general LordCrypto. Just because a game is terrible at one point doesn't mean it's terrible a few months down the line if it's been updated.
also getting rid of bad reviews sure has worked well when all the most helpful ones go on like this...
some of its just 'this should have been free' (which they should have expected plenty of), but a good portions of it is still actual criticism of the game too

half of that is people bitching about crashes (which don't happen to me)
and it's already worked better?

when people scroll down to the actual reviews all theyll see is red across the board, i cant call that working better

and it's been out for all of ~24 hours
and that's all the salty people being salty
give it some time to even out
The "expansion" adds 16 units and a new feature with 5 units in it
hardly worth 13 USD tbh
This link seems a bit useful for those who don't want to pay:
