Last I recall that happening was last year, and I thought they had re-enabled it since? Besides, I know some people who are capable and are running PhysX at the moment.
It's absolutely an option. I can't give any advice, I know that I wasn't able to turn it on for a few months but it just fixed itself somehow at some point without me realizing.

Yeah I've got little motivation to be playing so much just for a single resource with nothing else going on or any other things to aim for. Just Nitain for Vauban, the new archwing and a few odd weapons and the most frustrating part is it's not something I can just dedicate an evening to farm out like the similarly horrendous cryotic and oxium requirements.
it doesn't help that the only other way to get it is an extremely rare drop in a gamemode that has been reworked to take nearly half an hour to not only complete, but also find the caches

Indeed, Nitain is just shit and should be put into the Void mission reward tables. Void serves only as Argon farm at the moment so putting Nitain in there wouldn't hurt.
