Just stick with it and try to get into the characters anyway. The hipster elements and general naive college kid vibe might put some people off, but stick with it and let everything unfold. There is a payoff for getting invested in the story early and yes, there will be tonal shifts but DONT LET THE INTERNET SPOIL ANYTHING

Granted, the game looks stunning, but what is giving me doubts about going on or not is that the whole thing is less a "narrative that doesn't hold your hand" experience and more a "good fucking luck finding shit, asshole" experience
what's wrong with a "good luck finding shit" experience? I just bought a $5 game on my tablet that is all about "good luck finding shit" and it seems like it will be pretty good so far. It's called a puzzle. You have to figure it out yourself.

Let me assure you that the beginning is by far the biggest "good luck finding shit" part of the game. It is also less about luck when you realize you are supposed to look for things. Just make you sure you walk through every part of an area (not that hard) and you will find everything. It is an awesome game, suck it up.

I've actually got around the main MO of the game and I'm getting into it at a good pace
That said, there are some instances where some actions or event flags are a case of Guide Dang It (I'm thinking about the whole grenade tossing thing)

No, not yet. This game is in suuuuuuuper early access right now (although the creator plans to put it on steam in a bout 6 months once it has more content). However, he is making it from the ground up to be extremely moddable, so it would be really easy to make a starwars mod.
Although how well starwars ships would function in a realistic setting, that's another question.....
