Like The Witcher 3, I couldn't get into DA: Origins regardless of how long I played it for or how I played it.
That sounds more like you don't like fantasy RPGs.

which is the opposite for me. i have been, for the lack of a better term, eating and shitting fantasy rpgs since ff9 came out. dragon age just doesn't do it for me.

I can't stand fantasy RPG's. They are the most oversaturated type of RPG out there.
DA:O is an okay RPG. It takes it's own twists on couple of the well-known fantasy elements but doesn't really push them further. DA2 tried to make the world and politics more deep but failed at everything (except maybe making the gameplay more action-y if you are into that). DA:I did a better job but that game suffers from being SP MMORPG.

theres probably the fact that theres a distinct difference in the kind of fantasy that ff is to western folk tales

I disagree, I search Fantasy RPG to see if there was anything I do like, and The Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, FTL, Deus Ex, Dragon Age: Inquisition I do really like (easily played between 200 - 300 hours of it), Fallout and Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic are some that are included.
Those 2 games don't encompass the genre, so if I don't like them that doesn't mean I don't like that genre, it just means I don't like those 2 games.

or it's more of the fact that dao is almost a carbon copy of kotor, has the classical "you are the last of your kind/chosen one" story set against the backdrop of an incoming war (because we haven't seen that done a million times in the last 50 years) and has gameplay more suited to an mmo.

That's exactly one of the reasons why I couldn't get into it as well. Witcher on the other hand I love because you're playing the role of a guy who just happens to solve problems since it's his job. I'm willing to give Dragon Age Origins another chance (as well as Inquisition), but I need to beat Witcher 3 before I even think about doing that.
[editline]14th December 2015[/editline]
Also I love the side quests in Witcher 3, I spent literally 4-5 hours doing two side quests with one of them being really related to Se7en, it was lovely.
Had fun with the Battlefront beta but I still ain't buying that at full price.
Also, I can't recall a game where the grenade spam was that bad.
Have some leftover clips:

When it comes to Dragon Age Origins, the writing and the extensive dialogue system is a MAJOR part of the game proper, as it is going around killing the forces of Evil or all humanoids who give you grief
This is due to the fact DAO was a (failed) attempt to make the new generations of gamers to appreciate yer olde "old school videogame RPG" (think of Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment) once more, both as far as the emphasis on the race, companions and story and gameplay were concerned (it's worth mentioning I'm replaying DAO in easy mode because I just want to enjoy the story and the game still manages to KICK MY FUCKING ASS)
So if sitting idle for minutes and minutes and just listening to characters talking about things or coming up with a creative way to solve a predictament you are in bores you to no end or you aren't that invested into the story and the companions at hand, Dragon Age Origins is just not your cup of tea and you are better off without
Also, another thing
When videogames like DAO come out, people complain that epic fantasy stories are too cliché and they find the chosen one hero trope to be unspeakbly boring
When videogames like Dragon Age II or Mass Effect 2 come out, people complain that the story isn't "epic" enough, there's not a supreme army of Evil to face and that the playing character is either an anti-hero or, again, not "epic" enough
Make up your damn minds

The internet is not a Hive mind, The people complaining about the epicness are different from the people complaining about cliché's.

Has the optimization gotten better? I always think of picking it up when it's on sale but last I heard optimization was still poopy even for high end computers.
Would also like to know about that actually. (Regarding Ark)
It's gotten better and the next big update is going to bring even more optimization with it.
I mean I'm able to max it but I kinda made my computer for that purpose.
That squad thingey looks damn sweet.
Also taming is fun.
