it's not. I've encountered at least 40 people who have the exact same shit happening. the benchmarks don't lie either, the game runs like complete shit. it's fine in specific areas if you have very good hardware but overall it's one of the messiest AAA games I've ever seen.
It's not the greatest optimization, no doubt about that, but no game is perfectly done for everyone on release, and the number of crash-related complaints I've seen in this thread versus the number of positive responses to the stability sure makes it seem like only a handful of people have come off worse.
So I've been exploring around the water plant, just southeast of Sanctuary. I slept for the night and woke up in fog, and took a screenshot that I really love;
Most of the complaints people have are either directed toward the game being too streamlined or not being enough like New Vegas.
The majority of the reviews include direct comparisons to New Vegas and complaints that it doesn't do things like New Vegas, and the few that don't have that instead complain that the game is too streamlined or that most of the content is too easily accessible.
Then there's people who complain about your character being a fixed guy (which has been a thing since fallout 1), some reviews say the female protag is "useless" because of her background (nevermind the part where she can operate power armor and has no issues with using any form of weaponry), and a ton of people complain that the dialogue wheel is too obtuse when it's not really that much of an issue (it's annoying to use the arrow keys, but having the dialogue summarized to a single word isn't that big of a problem. Your character won't drastically change tone and mood unless you pick opposing options and the dialogue options are always fitting to their position on the wheel).
Basically 90% of the negative reviews can be discarded on the grounds that they're written by childish disgruntled players who expected something different entirely. 13 to 20 hours of gameplay isn't enough to judge the entire game.
Most of what you said amounts to, "It's a problem, but it's not a huge problem.", which still means there's a problem there.
And saying Fallout 1 gave you a predetermined character is just plain dishonest, the only background is that you come from the vault. In this one your character fought in the war, got married, had a child, was frozen in cryo, has a distinct voice. I can load up Fallout 1 if need be and show you the way different pregen backgrounds it displays.

You have to go there for a quest so I bet everyone has it anyway
Anyone have a link to an FPS config or something? I'm having trouble running it smoothly at low-medium graphics with god rays and volumetric lighting disabled.

Really messes people up too, high base damage, poison and bleed apparently
Their health drops real fast
Do you have to train Dogmeat or something to get commands to work properly? Whenever I try to tell him to pick something up he just stands there and barks at it.
I want to go back and properly customize my character because I just picked a preset face and changed the hair but I don't want to lose my progress.

This mod includes the ini tweaks (and a link to the original ini teaks in the description) I'm thinking of using the mod.
I made my guy look like Ocelot from MGS, currently awaiting to find a trenchcoat and revolver.
Although its really funny walking around as a guy who looks like Ocelot but instead of a raspy voice its your friendly neighborhood Dad-Ocelot on his son quest
How do settlement shops and stuff work? There's never anybody standing at my little trader booth even though I assigned someone to it and it seems to be producing a small amount of caps.

Where is this having to use the arrow keys coming from? In my game at least, I can just use my fucking mouse to select the options.
okay you're supposed to do something to make this elevator work but i clipped through the wall with a bookcase and now im stuck
[t]http://puu.sh/ljvUh.jpg[/t]
Yeah it's part of a quest, the bookcase should just open no problem but it seems it only works when you've finished it.
Oh, if none of you have done it yet, place a body in between the elevator doors and press the button for some laughs.
Also, I figured out how to recharge Fusion Cores. All you need to do is make sure the core is empty then stick it in one of those generators you get them from.

Well shit, that seems so obvious now.

I SOLD so many dead ones.
Well shit, that seems so obvious now.
I even asked it but I guess it ONLY works for empty ones, because people said that you couldn't.

Now we need a mod that adds it to the things you can build in a settlement, make it require a shit ton of power or something.
