Black Mesa Source V5 - "They're still working on Xen?"
Question, is that weapon model made by someone from the community, or by the devs? Because either way, that looks pretty incredible and [sp]better than the current rocket launcher model[/sp]. Still, looking really forward to the Steam/MP/Workshop release of Black Mesa, it will bring gold stuff for sure.
I don't see how it looks better than the current rocket launcher model, as it is our current Rocket Launcher model.
...see what I did there :v:?
[sp]Excluding the dank memes part, unfortunately.[/sp]
Not sure if there's an angle or not with this question, but yes, the HUD is finished. Pretty sure we have no further changes planned on it.
I already did:
"The most notable change is probably the Marines. Not only did our lead programmer rewrite their AI entirely, their values and behaviour were adjusted a lot too. They're no longer aimbots, but are instead much more like HL1 in that they run around a lot (and move fast), and are very good at finding angles and applying pressure on you with nades and tactics. Testers and the team seem to think they're way more fun and less frustrating to fight now, and I certainly think that too. In particular some of the tougher set pieces like the QE ambush are really fun now because there's a lot of unpredictable, run and gun action."
There isn't much more to say. Their AI isn't perfect, but we're using Source AI and nodegraphs so it was never going to be. Big, big step up from the mod, though. Way more fun, and a bit less difficult. Much more mobile and dynamic feeling. We also modified a bunch of the set pieces to take advantage of their new mobility and gameplay style; just last weekend I thoroughly overhauled the tank battle in Forget About Freeman to take advantage of the new AI, and I think I've breathed some serious new life into that incredible scene. Can't wait to see how people react to it!
Thanks. And yes. Crossfire will have the button. Cutting that button would be one of the most evil things I can think of, second only to cutting Crossfire.
[sp]By the way, we're cutting Crossfire.[/sp]
Since the grunts apparently use grenades now, will the grenades be easier to see? It was fine in HL1 because of the lack of clutter and a lot of detail that is now present in modern games, even HL2 did this to make it easier for players to spot grenades.

Yes, the grenades have a spark trail effect now similar to that found on Halo Reach's frag grenades, they're pretty easy to see now.

Sorry, I'm a bit dense right now; are you really?
Not all the maps from the original are getting remade. Some just aren't worth remaking. There will be original maps, later on down the line, though, and we're planning to let the community have ways of getting stuff in game too (not quite worked out the details yet, but we're hoping for this).
We're hoping the workshop will turn up some great stuff too, even us devs are bunging things on the workshop. I've done 2 workshop MP maps and all my Uncut stuff!

Can you elaborate? I have no idea what that looks like exactly.

No.
They are pineapple grenades, not like the ones from hl2.

Well, consistency. You can see grenades easily in HL2 so you can do it now in Black Mesa. Just like the sniper's laser sight being a stand-out visible line if you're really gonna question the logic of technology (live by the MST3K Mantra).

We didn't do it for consistency so much as for gameplay. Some of our maps are quite dark so it can be hard to see grenades sometimes, through no fault of the player. We've tried to remove as much needless frustration from the player experience as possible.

Seen it on your social media page, looks awesome. Also, yeah I should've mentioned that (blast!),anti-frustration measures are much appreciated. As demonstrated by how you've changed the HECU behavior and how you intend to change Xen. Because that level su-- *cue tomato throwing*
Thanks for the new Wallpaper.
I don't mean to rush you one bit;will we get to see new animations for first person weapons before release?

Are the black ops ninjas going to have gib effects? It seems a little inconsistent to have them be the only one's not to be effected

They don't make many appearances and aren't really easy to blow up unless using the mounted grenade launcher. Not really necessary. They're assassins, ninjas don't wear all black as typically shown freakin' everywhere. And never use Katanas but that is not the point (not trying to be rude, just little known facts).

Do you mean "will we see" as in "are there new animations" or as in "will you show them off"?
Nearly all of the weapons have been reanimated. But we probably won't show them off prior to release, though you may get a cheeky peek when I do my Gasworks video in the next couple days.

God damn, I wasn't expecting the new models to look that much better than the old ones.
Can't wait to see more of them in that video
EDIT: Have you guys replaced/improved the default source explosions from HL2? I know they were recolored in BM but visually source's explosions are really boring
Just my personal opinion, but I feel that the HL2 headcrab zombie animations don't really fit.
The HL1 zombies felt off (in a good way), not just because they were zombies, but because of just how normally they walked at you, like they were hurrying to get a cup of coffee and just so happened to want to murder you on the way.
Why aren't mods like Surface tension uncut and On a Rail uncut not going to be included in the final steam release?
Why aren't mods like Surface tension uncut and On a Rail uncut not going to be included in the final steam release?
The creator of that mod, TEXTFAMGUY1 (now a mapper for Black Mesa) isn't happy with the quality of those maps compared to the work in Black Mesa officially.

That sounds amazing, sounds like they're a little less like a Gmod SNPC and a little more like an in-between of HL1 and HL2 soldiers, I really like hearing that and I look forward to seeing the new Marines in action. What about squad tactics, do they attempt to draw fire and flank, or suppress? You already mentioned they use grenades now, which is great because before I've seen them use grenades like 2-3 times in 3-4 playthroughs! Also has the AI bug with Alien Grunts been fixed (they would get confused by the hornets and run back and forth or cower instead of fighting)?
What about the sound direction and models? The models were great, just the texture was mirrored, my only problem with it and not a big deal. But for the voices I know you guys were looking for new actors, have you found good ones? I also heard about making the dialog more realistic, has that been done either?
Sorry if I'm bombarding you with questions you cannot answer, the HECU Marines are one of my all-time favourite military enemies.
Why aren't mods like Surface tension uncut and On a Rail uncut not going to be included in the final steam release?
The BM Dev that posts here is actually the guy who made them. He said before that since he's joined Black Mesa officially, he's learned a lot about mapping and upon review of his old maps has found so many things he's unhappy about that he'd rather start from scratch, which he doesn't want to do. I don't fault him for it, it's a lot of work and he's already done it once. Iirc he will port it to retail as a mod, at least.
Another issue is property, since STU and OARU were unofficial works, content is protected by free-use laws. But since Black Mesa is now being released on Steam as a commercial product, some of the content used may be illegal in that regard. That's also the reason the mod is taking so long, a lot of older assets have to be replaced by assets that are made by current team members.

Yummy, cheers for this. Will add it to my HL wallpaper rotation :)

Yes, we have a new particle explosion and I think it's pretty gorgeous. I think it is visible in the video I shot, which I'm hoping to edit and get up tomorrow.

Alright, sweet, because I'm really liking the looks of it. Will the scanlines be adjustable on it like the current version?

Your channel's nitrotomato, right?
Will you be posting any more black mesa videos on it in the foreseeable future? I mean I'm not expecting a whole lot of videos back-to-back or anything like that, but would it be a good idea to subscribe to it for some general updates on the project? I'm really liking all the stuff I'm seeing so far, and I'd love to be able to see more as it's made.

Made it too easy to shoot them in the head, plus it looked like a generic zombie walk animation.
[editline]11th April 2015[/editline]
Will you redo the zombie sounds in the HL2-style? They sound like generic monsters, roaring and stuff which to me sounds silly. Especially the sounds they make when taking someone through a vent.

This makes me happier than I should be. The HL2 explosions make me want to throw up
