It is the first ability they start off too.

I'm not that far into the campaign, but I've heard that Vahlen doesn't pop up at all.
So where is she?
does hack attempts get saved during save/load? i tried hacking the same terminal 8 times now just to test, and it fails everytime, but with random percentage

I've heard someone talk about finding notes in english and broken german, and tygan quips about his predecessor once or twice
I'm assuming she either shows up at some point or is a plot hook for one of the dlcs

I've had (Just ambient Avenger chat) [sp]Bradford talk about the notes in German, Tygan calling he a "brute" in terms of autopsies and Shen worry about Bradford going mad about the notes.[/sp]
I thinks she appears in the prequel novel, though.
You know, I like the dynamic between Shen and Tygan. Old Shen and Vahlen were good too, but the new duo has some nice bickering between them.

If I remember right, XCOM works the same way Civ does, random numbers are generated at the start of the mission and are used in sequence, so save scumming doesn't work because you're getting the same random number each time, but redoing a turn and making the exact same actions in a different order can have different results because you're doing it out of sequence from the previous time.
Man they spiked the fuckin difficulty. Every time I push back the avatar project they one up me by getting a breakthrough and opening a facility.
Also why the hell is the [sp]gatekeeper[/sp] a regular enemy that spawns in a pod w other troops? Like one alone might be ok but while I'm trying to fight off 6 advent troops with rookies with 3 turns on the clock and I accidentally activate the pod with one of them + 2 other humanoid troops that shit just isn't cool.
im sorry but daughter-shen is boring as hell. shes about as generic as they come. i wish we had the old team instead but atleast i got alcoholic bradford

The seed for the random number generator is saved, so doing the same sequence of actions will always give you the same results. The reward percentage might be based off something else though.
This has the interesting consequence that whatever sequence of actions you decide to take, the moment you make the decision the outcome is already determined despite the action not having taken place yet. Of course, this doesn't really matter since you're free to choose whatever sequence of actions you like, but it makes one ponder the deterministic nature of some things.
Is there a place to find clean versions of the loading screens? IE: Without the weird video filter over them?
Learned something interesting. It seems the seed changes when you change targets. I know it sounds like BS, but my friend was streaming and he showed it to me. Had a 58% shot on a Sectoid. He took it and hit for 4 damage. Then he loaded back, did it a few more times. Same results. Typical, right?
Then he loaded it again and this time tabbed to another target, then back. Once again, normal shit. Wanna check them shot percentages. So he took the 58% on the Sectoid, and it MISSED. Every time he switched targets and then back, it missed instead of hitting. No mods or hacks or anything.
Not sure how to feel about that.
Are the mission difficulty descriptors supposed to be really unreliable? I've been playing for a few hours now and so far all the missions I got were "easy". For the most part I'd say that's true, I got like 3 missions in a row that were pretty much clean sweeps, I completed all objectives, no dead or wounded soldiers and I wasn't even in danger of running out of turns.
But then I got this civilian rescue mission that really stood out from the rest. I had to rescue I think 6 out of 14 or so civilians. But the problem is, one or two of them kept getting killed every turn, so I had to move on really quickly to remove the enemies as soon as possible. What really fucked me over is that once I reached a building where most of the shit was going on, a sectoid, stun lancer and a couple other advents got revealed in the same turn. Kinda scary already, but in addition to that, at the same time a civilian turns into a faceless and gets a free shot at my rookie, killing him in one sweep. So I had to spend like 4 turns with three weak 5 health soldiers to deal with all the bullshit and make sure no one else dies. In the mean time, all the civilians got wiped out and there was nothing I could do about it. I tried reloading that mission a couple of times but I always got overwhelmed, so I said fuck it, guess I'm failing this one. That wasn't even close to being easy.

Woah what are you still doing with Rookies at that point?

Those are retaliation missions, they're meant to be Advent hitting back at you and not pulling punches.

People should be a little bit more open to the idea of failing missions sometimes, honestly. It's fucking maddening, yeah, but it's not the end of the world.
Unless it literally is and in that case I feel for you.
Is there a tier 3 grenade launcher?
if its the first mission of that type id say its still a easy mission you just got unlucky and triggered too many pods at once, in that situation you can always save scum for a better outcome
[editline]8th February 2016[/editline]
i know save scuming is looked down on but i think the way the reboot games are setup it encourages it much more than classic xcom
D E S T R O Y E D
In the first mission where the sectopod got introduced, where I was comically unprepared and nearly dead from the 6 pods that all tried getting me at the exact same time my goddamn sniper just repeaters it and instantly kills it
My baby mag weapons were barely chipping its health and then this guy decides he's had enough and wins the mission
look at this cheeky cunt he's loving it

I was pretty pissed off initially but I quickly moved on. I'm just a little salty that the mission was advertised as "easy" when it clearly wasn't. I usually always bring one rookie and some other low rank soldiers on a mission to level them up. If I had known things would get so fucked so quickly, I'd have brought all my best people to the mission.
Wait did someone really think Shen was black?

Mine said easy too but I knew from past experience with EW plus the cutscene they show following up to it that this was basically a terror mission and thus full of bullshit.
Wait till the 'lids show up. Stun Lancers on steroids. One burrowed out of the ground at least 3 full moves into the fog of war, dashed in and hit my scout. Didn't have med kits to heal the constant 3 HP poison damage so I had to evac him.
Face Off is fucking amazing, I wish there was some way to make the cool down take less turns.
"easy", "moderate", "difficult" and "very difficult" just refer to the number of pods/number of aliens in said pods
if it's all advent troopers and sectoids spawns, even a "very difficult" mission will still be easy. and a sectopod appearing for the first time will kick your shit regardless of the difficulty
people give way too much importance to this rating
Im addicted to save scumming in this game, i get this huge remorse feeling whatever one of my soldiers die so i redo turns over and over until everyone is at least alive :v:

there's gotta be something more, i did a similar thing and now the result was
save > hack > success, continue on but fail with other stuff
load back the save > hack > failed, three times in a row now.

The Impacable-skill + Untouchable + wraith suit = carnage.

This german fuck just runs straight through solid walls, kills some poor unassuming alien scum and runs out again.
I would nickname him "Hit and Run".
I played some MP with Vosk. Much more fun than EU/EW MP.
We both fielded Advent decks - I had three Troopers, an Officer, Shieldbearer and Stunlancer. Vosk had a Trooper, Officer, Shieldbearer, Stun Lancer, and two Sectoids. My first contact was one of my Troopers (ADAM-2) being killed by overwatch fire. Then it began.

I threw my Stun Lancer at his Officer, apparently called Steve. Steve was a champ, and despite being disorientated, stared down Beta-1 like the cold hard badass he is. ADVENT breeds big balls, humans.
Next up, I had one of my troopers fire at Vosk's roof Trooper (Tyrone). He missed. Tyrone still died;

God bless destruction.
Turns pass, and various skirmishes are exchanged. Vosk's Stun Lancer ends up killing a Trooper and then is immediately critted by my Officer, slumping down like wet noodles.

Chad the Pectoid is soon after killed, and the skirmishes continue. Tony the Pectoid reanimates ADAM-2, moving a 2v2 to 2v3 and ultimately clinching the game.

A purely ADVENT fleshies deck can work against a deck of fleshies with Sectoids if your rolls are right, it seems. Which is very nice. This time, however, BETA-0 (my Shieldbearer) died a hero, flanking Tony but ultimately failing to crit him and thus being gunned down in cold blood by enemy Shieldbearer Van Darkholm.
