Does that only happen on higher difficulties? Also saving one area? Does this happen when you are doing really badly?
Well remember that saving one area means you can't save 2 others
It doesn't look like an abduction mission though considering it mentions a shipment?

That's Long War, isn't it. Because there's just no circumstances under which this can happen in vanilla.
I assume you actually mean "another successful operation, commander" - "panic spreads across XYZ"? If that's the case, well, doesn't the game kind of become way too easy if you are able to straight up do every mission with vanilla balance (aka not LW)?

I did, I actually didn't realize it was Long War until someone pointed it out. It just reminded me that the Panic system meant every mission would reduce it for country X and raise it for countries Y and Z. I'd argue that XCOM 2 looks very easy in comparison, missions to stop the Avatar progress can be done at will and are generally easier than guerrilla ops, it's almost a non-factor once you've contacted all the necessary territories. With the panic system, it's significantly harder to retain a country, and once they start pulling out it snowballs because you lose funding. Is it even possible to lose a rebel territory at all in XCOM 2?
I've seen Long War recommended a lot, and it sounds interesting, but I don't intend to get it. I'm not terrible, but I'm no chess master.

If you neglect to do a retaliation mission, you'll lose contact and any radio relay you had in that region. It's inconvenient, but considering you can recontact them again it's not bad. It'd be like if could get a country back in EU by just putting a satellite back on them.

I also noticed after a point I stopped getting retaliation missions, anyone know the deal with that?

No argument from me there, "strategy" game in XCOM 2 is severely lacking in difficulty and complexity. You just instantly find the one optimal approach and then the challenge goes away.
As for chess masters, yeah well you don't need to be one in LW, you just have to have some free time to sink into it, get used to it. You get a lot more more soldiers - you're basically forced to fill your barracks, so losing them isn't really all that painful, bigger squad etc. It's fairly well balanced in its tactical component (that's just my opinion though, many don't agree), but strategy can be fucking bollocks, especially the air stuff. Air game can fuck you up, thankfully there's a custom "Second wave" option that makes it trivial so it doesn't distract. You can also return countries under control of the Council by doing some fairly sensible shit, so you can lose them a lot and bring them back. As long as you don't completely neglect it, the doomsday timer won't be filling up any faster than in vanilla.
But there's also more missions. And I mean it. Five times as many, if not more - you get to do every single one, without having to pick one out of three, abductions are also more frequent. Like, I really enjoy watching one dude on Youtube, he played Long War and his episode count on it goes beyond two hundred.
So do I unlock the final Avatar facility once I do all the shit relating to the codex brain? I've already wiped out the avatar facilities on land.
Just had a squad wipe at the end of April on my restarted Ironman run thanks to two stun lancers knocking two of my troops out cold and getting a ranger critted in full cover
I really, really want to enjoy Xcom 2 but man am I struggling to find reasons
I think I just need to take a break considering I've just had two really unsuccessful runs in a row, but it's that pull of "you gotta get a good run in"

That's xcom baby, don't give up. That's the whole point of ironman

Yep, you gotta complete all the shadow chamber projects and all the missions that they unlock.
No matter what I do to kill the last Chrysalid in the mission I am doing the game crashes, if I do any move that will result in the Chrysalid dying then the game just shuts down, for example if I end the turn in overwatch or if I have a ranger too close at the end of the turn with bladestorm the game will freeze up.
There goes a perfect ironman campaign.

When you kick the ADVENT ass too hard you force them to focus on defence rather than offense, and the retaliation strikes keep getting delayed by your succes.
Go on enough a winning streak and the continuous delay means you won't see much retaliation strikes, if any.
Also, the codex is a very neat idea but it just feels ruined when they start to replace frontline/muton troops in normal missions.
Dunno if late but Capnbubs posted this WiP:

It's going to be compatible with his other shiz. Right now he's figuring out how to properly morph it so that the model fits all the different faces.
FUCKING AMAZING
I can't wait to see people making custom torso / leg / arm models, especially when seeing the great stuff we're already seeing with just the headwears
Alright guys, I've finally created the voice pack tutorial for XCOM 2. This is how I've been getting custom voices to work, after so much researching and experimenting.

Agreed, the Codex should have stayed an enemy that only exists around the ADVENT Network. So, primarily when you skullfuck an ADVENT Officer, around UFO's, and around those Data Transmitters.

Soooo I'm on a certain mission where you get a reduced squad size and uhh, thanks to the effort of a codex (dodge is such horseshit on them), two archons and two andromedons, I'm down to one person.
Maybe I shouldn't have taken my B team.
[editline]12th February 2016[/editline]
Nevermind rangers with conceal are awesome
Fuck Archons, fuck Codexes. I'll never forgive them for killing Cpl. Tariq Ferguson.
What can I do to make them die as quickly as possible?

Can I recommend Nul Lance?

After I got my psi operative in the squad, the weren't so bad because null lance and void rift are 100% accurate damage dealers. Insanity can give some debuffs like disorientation, panic, and even mind control. Domination is also a solid way to "remove" them from combat even though they aren't very effective combatants. Grenades also fall under the "guaranteed damage" category, but considering their ability to shred they're better saved on armored units.
As for the codex, if you can disorient them they're useless. If that's not an option, try and kill them in one shot if you can. They tend to teleport so you won't likely get overwatch on them. If you leave them alive they teleport and flank and psi bomb. If you don't kill them in one hit they clone and that doubles the problem. You're best hope is to one shot them. Critical plasma shots ought to do it.
Snipers with deadeye are the cure to the codex disease... unless they dodge.
Archons are easy because they have no armor and like to waste turns doing airstrikes or going for shit odds melee. Codexes aren't as threatening if you flashbang them, basically get some of your high damage people to focus them, and use grenades or combat protocol on low health clones.

Remember! Killing highest tier enemies requires teamwork, you should never expect to be able to kill a lot of them in 1 turn. Just focus down your targets and try not to activate more than 1 pod at a time.

jesus dude just turn ironman off and give the game a free run
What the hell affects research speed, because my codex brain research just jumped from 4 days left to 90
The difficulty spike between veteran and commander is pretty significant. On my first playthrough on veteran, I only lost one soldier. Now on commander, I've lost three and I've only done two missions.
I hate those moments where you move your soldiers and it's pretty much void of enemies, then you move your last one on the square right next to the other safe soldiers, and somehow you found *the* spot to activate a pod, as if I was supposed to expect that bit of wall to not have correct LOS collision, or as if I should've guessed a pod was on the opposite side of the building and they saw a pixel moving through 2 windows and a floor.
Then of course they run straight at ya and crit errybody.

I'm on my 4th play through on just the veteran difficulty and I can't finish a game. Either I lose the best troops through some serious bullshit rolls of the "dice" or the enemy happens to be far luckier than I'll ever be. The sad part is, it only gets more difficult.
3 "losses" (quits) in a row and yet I'm determined to beat this. I think I'm just too casual of a player for the game, if that makes any sense. Still, I'm hellbent on getting through at least one campaign without feeling overwhelmed and ultimately punished.
What happens when you fail or ignore retaliation missions? Is it like EU where you can't make contact with that country anymore?
