Or he was just an average joe who found a phone laying around, and discovered it belonged to a career criminal who'd gotten whacked and dropped it, and then he starts getting calls and messages on it as if he were that person, so with the promise of big money (and the threat of a hit being put out on him if the truth got out), he goes along with it, taking on their name and everything.
This is also why he doesn't speak around the major NPCs, because he assumes the jig will be up if he doesn't sound like the guy he unwittingly stole the identity of.
Sorta wish that the online protagonist would make some noise i.e. yells when hurt rather than just stay silent. Even some silent video game protagonists make noise when in pain.

The weird part is that they do do that when the player leaves and the character becomes an NPC.
I wish both genders got like five voice types to pick from with the ability to change pitch, kinda like Saints Row.
They'd have preset lines in cutscenes and actually interact with major characters

Yeah but that would take time, money, and effort. And that would mean they couldn't make all those [I]great[/I] mute jokes.

Money spawning is one of a few things that seem to instantly red flag you, which is why you still see framing and weapon stripping running rampant, but nobody's handing out cash anymore, even non-maliciously.
From what I've heard even receiving money is becoming banable which worries me because I'm going clean now, and if I get banned because of some asshat I'm going to be pissed.
From what I understand, they check text chat, in-game text message and social club message logs to determine whether or not you were asking for the money you got.
You're also instantly deemed suspicious if you got it in a session with only you present, or only one other person present.
I know I've said it before, but I really wish we could have the race car variants of the Stallion, Gauntlet, Dominator and Buffalo in online. Hell, even if it was just the liveries without any performance differences it'd be fine with me.
We might be getting an update very soon as Rockstar apparently uploaded some "DLCPacks4" folder on their servers.
