i just decided to try out the Survival beta--apologies if this has been answered earlier dozens of pages ago--but after putting an asterisk before every line in plugins.txt, and leaving DLCList.txt and loadorder.txt unchanged (no *), the game crashes to desktop immediately on selecting New Game. is this a known issue with a simple fix or do i need to comb through my load order and look for conflicts?

What mods do you have installed?

Make sure you uninstall any hud mods because they mess up or something.

There is probably some mod conflict somewhere.

The whole * thing was only discovered yesterday AFAIK so there hasn't been a lot of testing.

if i launch with my mods checked off in MO, the game doesn't change the plugins folder so i cant add the asterisks???

At the point I am in the game, I have literally no reason to regard the Enclave as [I]the[/I] villains and work with the Brotherhood of Steel, at least from where I'm standing
In New Vegas, Nevada had, at the very least, a stable great city in the form of New Vegas and three major factions bringing some kind of order and cooperation in their respective territories. The East Coast from Fallout 3, instead, is mostly a clusterfuck where everyone does whatever the fuck they want, which tends to be a issue due to the endless supplies of super mutants, raiders and other pillagers
So, what's the big plan of your dad and the Brotherhood? Open a free pure water distribution, for everyone to benefit from. It's not like hordes of people will come guns blazing into the place and spill blood all over in an effort to secure the Jefferson Memorial and be the only ones to get water.
The Enclave, on the other hand, wants the whole project for itself in an attemp to control the whole region, with a good dose of fascism and forced order thrown into the mix. Sure, you can agree that fascism is bad, but, in all honesty, it appears like the only thing that could work in a setting such as Fallout 3
Of course, if the Enclave is really planning a genocide or something against the majority of the East Coast's population, then the whole thing isn't worth it anymore and it'd be yet another case in a VRPG where I'll have to stick with a particular faction on the virtue of it sucking less than the other/s

You can't ally with the Enclave, the most you can do is somewhat cooperate. And you pretty much have to work with the Brotherhood of Steel to finish the main quest.

And also, it goes a little bit deeper than that. The Enclave has people in it that want their own ends met.
