Got killed by the Deathclaw in Concord, it had only a tiny bit of health left.
Having stimpacks on quick key is essential :P
disabled all mods, even verified files through steam, still can't start a new game as it crashes immediately on hitting the button on the main menu with no error :(
this is survival beta branch

Do you have any UI mods? Once i disabled those, the game stopped crashing.

hm, I had the better dialogue mod but I thought it was a .esp and they're all disabled

some mods install extra files, if you're using NMM you'll have to disable them completely, don't just uncheck the box.

Bethesda is going to have to add more food and shit to the world if the hunger and thirst rate stays this high
Can you convert a save to survival mode or do you have to start a new game?

p, sure you can change to survival, but you cannot change back.
The Deathclaw in Concord spawns even if you don't jump down, not sure if it is tied to the amount of raiders you kill or just on a timer. So I just sat on the roof and shot it from a safe spot :P
as far as companions dying goes, I remember someone saying something that I sort-of agree with: it's ok to completely lose the game because someone important died, like if you shoot nick just because and you can't complete a story quest, that's your fault, you fucked up and now you have to either reload a save or restart the game
though that kinda makes having them as companions that much more of a non-option since you risk failing the entire game from just having them around, but still, i think i'd enjoy the major consequence for someone important like dogmeat or nick being killed
-you edited your post nevermind-
I still hold onto the idea that no NPC should be essential at the hands of damage from the player, but damage from NPCs should be where essential status exists. I shouldn't have the main quest become unavailable because I left dogmeat over at the starlight drive-in by himself, some raiders spawned when I was near the area, and then they attacked and killed him without me knowing. But if I pump Dogmeat full of lead, down him, and then continue to shoot him to oblivion, and he falls over and dies, that's my fault.
I want an F4SE mod to make essential status work like this. Oh, and it'd also be nice if the mod had a failsafe to warn you that the NPC was important through a pop-up like in Morrowind, so I know what I did.
yeah, that sounds better now that you mention the situation of leaving companions somewhere accidentally, which i do often because i forgot i told them to wait and your pip-boy doesn't tell you where they are anymore

Any ideas on how to improve this guy?

When I built him he tried to run away from Sanctuary, I had to make him my companion so he didn't flee.
Even though Mettaton is technically on a wheel, I feel like using a Mr. Handy Thruster would be better for the shape. That's kind a of a stretch even then though, so I don't really know what to do there.
If that doesn't bother you, I'd recommend a Mr. Handy Torso with the actuated armor to get the box-shaped look, and the robobrain arms you have.
do a soft-nuke
delete interface, strings, textures, models, video, etc folders from Fallout 4's Data directory. There should be no subfolders in your Data director before the next step. Do an integrity check through Steam. Then run the game.
If that doesn't work, delete your config files along with it, open the launcher once to force completely fresh new vanilla ones, re-modify your configs back to what you want, then try again.
And finally, if that doesn't work there's always the hard nuke option, which is what I did
Don't delete the videos folder, afaik no mods install into it, and it's roughly 4 gigabytes you'd need to redownload.

Unless it's a main menu replacer, in which case it does replace it.

He also can't fit in the door of the open building right across the street, so you can just hide in there if he runs off and you can't get him from the roof.

Companions should also be able to survive all fall damage and their own explosions. I swear the only times my companions have been downed is because they're too dumb to walk in a straight line over a 20 metre drop.
I think the way Skyrim had it would work best, where companions would take a knee if they took too much damage so you had a chance to revive them, but if they keep taking damage they die.
will hud mods cause any issues?
I've just been informed that survival is being revamped. Naked snake run on hold.

You just learned now, or did Bethesda decide to 180 on the amazing thing they just put out?

Yes because it modifies the HUD.

Survival has been a difficulty from launch, this patch revamps it.
[editline]29th March 2016[/editline]
Also holy shit, no saving needs to be optional. I've been stuck in concord for the last hour.
Survival needs quick saving.
I know some people may not, but I really like the bed only saving change for survival. It adds a real sense of difficulty and risk which is something the game never had before. There's something on the line if you die, you don't just reload your quick save from 5 seconds ago and try again. Gives it a completely different feeling.
There are also enough beds to where if you're saving when you can you'll never lose too much progress.
I dunno, there's a difference between offering interesting but difficult gameplay features and literally just making it so that you get fucked and lose a bunch of progress with any potential bug or crash or computer issue. (or even just bullshit one shot sniper raiders and sneaky deathclaws spawning behind you out of nowhere)
Keeping the bed thing for hard saves is fine by me, but there needs to be something else in play. Like, maybe a timed autosave every 15 minutes or something.
I think it needs to be more brutal.
I hope they revamp gas masks to actually do gas mask things
It'd be handy if gas masks and radiation suits gave you poison resistance, I die constantly to mirelurk queens/hunters because they spew poison damage that's completely unavoidable unless RNJesus gives you a poison resistant piece of armor
Why is there no Protectron voice? There is one for Sentry and Assaultron.
They leave out the cutest robot voice. Shame Bethesda shame.
There's no Mister Handy, Mister Gutsy or the female equivalent Miss Nanny either, likewise no varied accents or voices/dialogue of robot according to personality. I'd really like some proper Protectron vendors next update with their voices, if not I will just have to use beep voices.
I had this weird dream where there were quests where your Pip-Boy is taken away just like those missions in Super Mario Sunshine
I mean like think about it: to steal your pip-boy all someone would have to do is get the right leverage on the latch and pull it, and it'd come right off
I consider this to be my cutest robot.

Maybe a sleeping bag that you can carry with you but you can only sleep out of combat and no too frequently otherwise you get a "You're not really tired" message
Maybe even the ability to set up camps like in Frostfall with the ability to have portable workbenches. They weigh a lot and take time to set up but they let you change your weapons or armour or cook food or make medicine in the field

I built a very similar-looking robot, designed for ruining the day of anyone I don't like.
