Thats the point of the smart pistol, if you don't watch your back someone is gonna sneak up on you.
[QUOTE=Minelayer;44011274]I agree with the need for an audio warning for the smart pistol; I've died a couple times out of nowhere because some jerk was stalking me.[/QUOTE]
you would have died out of nowhere had he been using a regular gun
Name one other gun that can one-shot a sprinting pilot outside of melee range (i.e. not the shotgun). Getting OHKO'd by some jerk with the smart pistol + enhanced targeting mod picking you up from 30 feet away is shitty.

I think you guys are underestimating what a balance threat guaranteed hits on an enemy are.
Carbine picks off people in a fraction of a second, if you've got aim.
That's still a far cry from guaranteed hits. I have no problem with fast kills IF they require actual skill to pull off. Sniped? OK, shouldn't have been standing still. AR'd? OK, he got the jump on me and I didn't have cover. Smart pistol? Oh, he was looking at me for 3 seconds.
It bothers me that something that should only be available to skilled players is just handed out to anyone.
[editline]22nd February 2014[/editline]
Not to mention it removes all challenge from picking out targets. Titanfall has kind of a muddy art style, it can be difficult to pick up players against the background visual noise. Smart pistol removes that by painting bright circles all over any enemy on your screen, even if you're not looking directly at them.
I think they could fix it by narrowing the reticle for the smart pistol, maybe two separate reticles, a full size one for minions, and half size for pilots.

Also it can see right through pilot cloaking

with double the lock time. again its alright where it is.
ugh is the thread still going to go round and round about the smart pistol when the game releases?
this entire page is rehashing an argument that has already happened numerous times

This game is fast paced enough that if someone is looking at you for three seconds you're dead anyway, unless they're straight up not paying attention.
Carbine has better range and power than the smart pistol anyway so the balance feels fine to me.
They don't need to pay attention, though. The smart pistol does that for them.
[QUOTE=JoeSibilant;44012846]They don't need to pay attention, though. The smart pistol does that for them.[/QUOTE]
Well, yes and no. Even if the smart pistol is gaining a lock, the player still has to keep the guy in his sights for it to work, and in this game a LOT can happen in those three seconds. I lost my lock-on countless times when someone ducked around a corner or ran up a wall and I had to try and chase him down again. The pistol might let you know where someone is but that doesn't mean you're getting an easy kill.
OK, so let's use that and add a audio alert when someone starts to lock you. That way you actually get the chance to make those 3 seconds count.
Why? The only thing that would happen is you would know to start moving like the wind out of there, and this thread is full of people arguing that a skilled player can follow you long enough to get a lock, sooooooo
[editline]22nd February 2014[/editline]
The only thing that would be impossible with an audio alert is brain-dead players getting easy kills.

It also makes getting the drop on someone 100% impossible if you have a smart pistol. The only reason the smart pistol is worth using as an alternative to the carbine is because it's an instant, silent kill [B]IF[/B] you can avoid being seen for those three seconds (or the other guy is totally distracted or just has piss-poor aim). Take away the advantage of secrecy and there would really be no reason to use it.
But the audio cue would just do the same thing that the first bullet from a carbine/SMG does--alerts you that someone, somewhere is trying to kill you. It's not like a "ping" or "beep" or whatever tells you where the enemy is and their status. The smart pistol's advantage is that it acquires targets for you, it doesn't need the added advantage of being a 100 percent effective stealth weapon. That's what melee is for.

Right, but the real difference is that in order to kill a pilot with the smart pistol, you NEED those three seconds. With a carbine, you can kill a pilot in about one second, and from a greater distance at that.
But you can still get those three seconds if they know where you are. You just have to either stick to their tail as they run, or dodge their fire if they go on the offensive. And if they're using the shotgun or carbine, hey, you'll probably die in that particular scenario (unless you run). But that's weapon balance for you.
[editline]22nd February 2014[/editline]
People are acting like the smart pistol is only viable as a stealth weapon and that's really not true.
[editline]22nd February 2014[/editline]
That's just the easiest way to use it currently.

You do realise the time to kill on the carbine is less than a second, right? The smart pistol is designed for stealth, stop exaggerating. You're acting like if someone is anywhere on your screen it snaps your view to them, when in realist you have to keep them in the centre 1/3 of the screen for 3 seconds, which isn't easy if they're moving around.
You don't like instant kills. So I guess they should made it so titans can't one shot a pilot, or a headshot should only do 90% of your health, titans shouldn't be able to step on pilots to kill them, grenades should just be removed, melee should be nerfed, and the shotgun should have it's damage dropped.
Remove guns entirely we can make it Dear Esther 2: Robots Edition.
just let us swap roles with the titan repair teams
One thing that is annoying about the smart pistol is when you both eject. the one with the cloak and smart pistol will kill the other person way faster than a normal gun.

Whenever I hit eject while getting rodeo'd I always kill the guy because I'll be facing him while he's probably wondering why he's suddenly 50 feet in the air

There's a red arrow that shows you're being locked on to and from what direction.
