not "physics", obtuse physics based puzzles that don't make sense anymore, which is a pretty sad thing for a series that a bunch of people still claim holds up well What I'm saying is it's not as if Valve has ever been opposed to "gimmicks", and Half Life has always kind of been a tech demo
I just don't see HL2 being gimped by physics as HL3 would be if it was designed for VR. VR (depending on its implementation) has very restrictive implications on gameplay, Valve has been going for room-scale design when making VR games (See Aperture VR demo) and HL3 at room-scale would be terrible, enough so that I can't see Valve doing it. I'm sure HL3 will have VR support, but it's not going to be designed around it, not without a myriad of breakthroughs at least. [editline]18th September 2015[/editline]
The only gimmicky physics that I remember from HL2 is the cinderblock see-saw puzzle somewhere in the beginning.
There's a number of stupid physics puzzles, such as the water buoyancy one in the canals, and the washing-machine weight in the airboat section.
I've never seen them as stupid gimmicks, I've always seen them as, you know, puzzles to break up the combat. They're just physics puzzles because physics was new at the time. Without physics they would've been some other type of puzzle, like all the puzzles in Half-life 1.
You say that they are stupid, but I almost wish modern games had more of them. HL2 is one of the few games that did physics right
It's incredible to me that Marc is still willing and happy to answer lore questions after all this time.
Probably because the only thing he writes at Valve now is Dota lore.
Writing lines for Dota 2 must be pretty cool at times as you get to write stuff for 100+ diverse heroes.
Probably because the only thing he writes at Valve now is Dota lore.
I'm pretty sure hes the one responsible for all the rock based puns on tiny.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/IDtyVRk.jpg[/t]
Those chair and carpet textures. That part where the carpet is worn off the floor. That cigarette butt. That old wooden TV. That water cooler. :incredible:
that water dispenser looks almost like a paintover
That cigarette butt. :incredible:
Took me forever to find it.
You say that they are stupid, but I almost wish modern games had more of them. I've noticed that physics in newer games have been severely lacking.
Half Life 2 is definitely a product of it's time
When I play Half-Life 2 or a source engine game with the same basic movement (FPS) I feel very rooted in the world. Half-Life 2 definitely created the most immersive physics system of the time and it's held up really well.
when I look at some of the things source can do, it honestly does remind me of real life
This wasn't originally possible in HL2, though. Oh and by the way, it's not an engine bug.
asked laidlaw what's wrong with star wars because fuck it
I never really "got" star wars either half-life is better sci-fi imo (even despite not having that much focus on sci-fi elements)
asked laidlaw what's wrong with star wars because fuck it
Its not that Star Wars was cheese science fiction, it was that it was a genuinely fantastic that was really fun to watch.
bet your life is like it's in the build engine you spoilsport
Pretty much all code related to player movement is a part of the game code. Therefore, it can be easily fixed in mods.
nope. its an animation 1080p screens [t]http://i.imgur.com/IDtyVRk.jpg[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/0h1mHDT.jpg[/t]
:fap: holy shit the second screen looks absolutely gorgeous with all those tiny details with unbelievably high poly models. however, something bothers me with the first image. the shine on table thing at the right makes it look like it would come out of fallout 4.
the shine on table thing at the right makes it look like it would come out of fallout 4.
I assume the Aperture VR version of Source 2 is using some sort of PBR shading model, the normalmap is just too strong on the table, an actual table would be sanded before having varnish applied, giving it a much smoother appearance. Whereas the table here looks like some freshly milled oak in the shape of a table, with some varnish put on it.
This wasn't originally possible in HL2, though. Oh and by the way, it's not an engine bug.
Yeah it was added in Orange Box
I never really "got" star wars either half-life is better sci-fi imo (even despite not having that much focus on sci-fi elements)
Probably because Star Wars is Science Fantasy.
Black Mesa logo inside ATLAS?
that doesn't look like a black mesa logo
Black Mesa logo inside ATLAS?
Not surprising, as both companies may have stolen stuff from each other.
Probably because Star Wars is Science Fantasy.
you mean space opera
Black Mesa logo inside ATLAS?
No, it's fairly clear that is not the Black Mesa logo. For one, that would be upside down, the BM logo is the other way up. The Black Mesa logo is a rectangle with a sloped side (representing the Mesa), with both the flat side and the slope being spaced a noticeable distance from the circumference of the circle. This is what the Black Mesa logo looks like: That is not the same as what's on the card inside ATLAS. This is what it looks like in a recent video of the demo: While that is still not the best quality, it's obvious they do not have the same shape. The filled in area on the logo inside ATLAS is larger than that of the BM logo, and there is no clear gap between the filled in section and the edge of the circle. It is clearly joined with the circle rather than being separate. At no point has there been a design like that before, there's only been one variation of the BM logo. It's not Black Mesa.
whoa I've never seen that before, they must've removed it years ago because it didn't play for me when I first tried ep. 2 in early 2013

they haven't made a HL game in so long they forgot how to draw the black mesa logo
