I wouldn't mind a few areas in HL3 that were like Deus Ex. I.E. you've still got a set level but it's fairly open and there are occasional sidequests that can give you resources or information relevant to the current level.
A file named HL3.txt does not just randomly get released in an entirely different game by accident. Odds are Valve intentionally leaked the document to gauge people's reactions to an open world Half-Life game.
You don't understand how this works. They didn't include the file, they forgot to delete it from that branch. Just like dozens of minor leaks in the past years. Also, I wouldn't take the file for something serious. Of course it's from HL3, but it can be as old as 2006 for all we know (Which is not true because VR mentions, but you get the point). According to EP2 dev commentary, EP3 was developed even back before EP2 was released. The thing about game development is they build and test hundreds of different concepts, just throwing shit at the playtesters and see what sticks. I don't want to begin discussions as to why they are taking so long or how active the development is, but I do want to say that even if you find a general overview of HL3 in gameplay, story and mechanics, it could just as well been how the game was for a few months in 2008... Or the finalized version that they're working on right now. We have no way of knowing, simple as that.
Is the file for Source, or source 2?
Is the file for Source, or source 2?
Source 2 since it's dota 2 reborn (though a lot of the things in the file seem to be old carry overs from older stuff, but whatever)
Is the file for Source, or source 2?
Source 2. Dota Reborn, HL3, the Aperture VR demo etc all use the same base, hence why those files slipped inside Reborn's files.
Whipped this up as a proof of concept for the HL2 shotgun (after my annoyance at the shotgun being one-handed in first person) [t]https://i.gyazo.com/1258e4a6047634db1988f95ab37d2102.png[/t] Good? Bad? :v:
Looks great, only issue is the ejection port is on the wrong side.
Source 2 since it's dota 2 reborn (though a lot of the things in the file seem to be old carry overs from older stuff, but whatever)
It's pretty common, the Aperture VR demo (even though it's in S2) uses the old Source 1 spark effect.
It's pretty common, the Aperture VR demo (even though it's in S2) uses the old Source 1 spark effect.
If the perforce source tree leak was real (sorry, haven't followed this stuff in a long time) then half life 3 was probably started in source1
It's been a while since I've played ep2 but, at the end, didn't the rocket shut that portal down so the combine were shut off from earth? This would mean that earth is isolated again and the only thing left to do would be to clean up the remaining scattered combine resistance. I could see an open or semi-open world hl3 working, at least in terms of plot.

I wonder why can't the Combine fire up one of their own citadels? I guess you need a two way connection.

I bet there will be complications. Other Citadels on Earth re-activating. Unfathomable Gman shit happening. Alyx going apeshit over Combines. Cats surviving teleporters. [editline]10th October 2015[/editline] Oh and Aperture and Borealis and whatnot.
I've asked for this since if the file was made for source 2 then it obviously cant be a 2006 thing like people above implied
It's a Source 2 file. But like many other Source 2 files it could have been converted from a similar Source 1 file. (Not sure if such help files existed for Source 1 FGDs in Hammer). However, the fact it mentions VR Chaperone stuff sort of confirms it was at least edited recently. Valve only started using that term in May this year.
Looks great, only issue is the ejection port is on the wrong side.
the w_model of the shotgun probably wasn't a final design either, or it was just an oversight.
The VR stuff makes me suggest that most of this doesn't have much to do with HL3 at all (except for the stuff obviously marked as HL3), valve has recently said that HL3 won't be a VR game. The fact that theres a rpg.txt file also makes me think that they're also working on an RPG right now. I don't see why they'd have two files if it's for the same game. That's not how source 1's fgds worked.
All of this Half-Life speculation reminds me of the time I went on a DarkRP server a couple of years ago and some kid claimed that one of his parents worked for Valve and was playing on his/her account. He told stories of that Half-Life 3 was in development behind closed doors and at that time only a few people were working on it. Now we all thought he was just talking shit until we checked his Steam profile and noticed he was in the official private Valve group. Strange encounter, I think I have footage from that encounter lying around somewhere on my old computer. I'll have to go dig it up to see what he said.

and that kid's name was Marphy Black

HL2 certainly wasn't built with VR in mind, but some people count it as one of the first great VR experiences due to the added sense of "place".
and that kid's name was Marphy Black
Nah, I forgot the name of the kid. I'm pretty sure his name was on display in the footage I captured, though. I'll let you guys know what I dig up when I recover the files from the hard drive later this weekend.
Valve always updates stuff at 10:00 PST, if anything is happening today it'll happen in 10 minutes.
Valve always updates stuff at 10:00 PST, if anything is happening today it'll happen in 10 minutes.
it's saturday
Valve always updates stuff at 10:00 PST, if anything is happening today it'll happen in 10 minutes.
RIP nothing happened.
RIP nothing happened.
:ok: You just can't see the changes :ok: [t]http://sharex.moe/i/2015/10/15-10-11_04-26-35.png[/t]
RIP nothing happened.
Peculiar. Yesterday, nothing happened either. And the day before. And the day before. and the day before. And 8 years short of 5 days before.
How much hype time before release would HL3 need? The main problem would be people being sceptical of HL3 being announced.
